@buildsomen Yes, you can use a 7805 and a 9v battery to do this project. However, a 7805 is terribly inefficient when dropping the voltage from 9v-5v, additionally, a single 9v battery is only rated for around 450-600mah@9v. Once reduced to 5v usable ma is probably more like 300-400mah. An A123 cell is good for about 1500-1800mah@3v. In series that gives you 1500+mah@6v so in the end you wind up with substantially more usable "juice" for your device.
Do you have any idea where I can get a circuit diagram for this project? This would be a great way to get some bonus points in this semester of physics.
or if you use the mintyboost kit to get more efficient voltage out of a smaller power supply, you can get 2/3 AA batteries from cheap solar path lights (that fit great in altoid small tins) or combine the kit wit the solar panel. I'm hoping I can post a video of this soon.
allelectronics website has rechargeable 123 cells that put out 3 volts. they're about 3.50 a piece but they are worth it to fit a small size that you can reuse
Hey I'm going on a long bus ride on Friday and I don't want my beloved iPod running out of battery. I created a portable iPod charger concept/design but my iPod touch won't accept it. Only my nano amd my friends classic. Can you tell me how to make this in more detail?
@smithba76 iJust finished making mines & it turned out great! iChanged the circuit a little& Im Using CR2 Batteries because I couldn't find the a123 batteries, Next im going to replace the batteries w/ rechargeable CR2s'
@skootb2 Go on dealextreme. com, they have those batteries which are rechargeable, 2 or 3 dollars for 2 of them. free shipping, not to mention they sell most electronics a lot cheaper than you'll ever find in america
Thank you all for your comments! I'm glad you all have enjoyed the build. I have been very busy with work lately so my Altoids projects have been shelved. Check back periodically as I hope to have tutorials up for all my builds soon! Thanks again and keep "Altoiding"!
@njtpenguin41 I wouldnt bring it through airport security. When I did, the guy looked at me as if saying "what the hell is this? what are you trying to pull here". I had to explain in detail how it works to prove it wasnt a bomb or trigger of some sort.
Great video. I am going to build one myself but just wanted to ask if you have a wiring diagram of the connections to the usb port with the resistors. Any help would be great. Thanks
it would be best if you took a 9v witch is cheaper then you could use a voltage regulator to put the 9v to a 5v and a usb use a 5v

any way you could use a 9v battery with a 7805 Voltage regulator that will convert 9Volt battery into a 5volt output?

How about using a 9v battery?
