The bagpipes were flat, smart ones...anyways, despite being a band kid in school, I look past that and hear a beautiful melody, formerly a black spiritual, that is used to show God's grace to undeserving wretches like us humans... (sorry, I think somewhat like a Calvinist)
Here's a nice geeky addition to the "Kirk's a d*ck" post some ways down...it wasn't made particularly clear in the film, but according to the book (I know, just calm down) the torpedo was intended for the Sun.. Yep, that's right, old best buddy Jim wanted to see that pointy eared bastard fry in hell! It was Lt. Saavik who altered it's course as she suspected the Genesis planet may rejuvinate him :-P
Funny. I haven't seen this movie and years and yet the second the orchestra takes over I can picture the torpedo firing into the sunrise over Ceti Alpha V. What a great movie.
"We are gathered here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. But it should be noted that this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human."
Has anyone else realized how much of an asshole Admiral Kirk is in this scene? We all know Captain Spock hated it when people pointed out his human half. Now that the guy is dead and can't do anything about it, Admiral JERK throws in one more jab. He might as well called him a "vigger' while he's at it.
Who am I kidding, I didn't get chills. I burst into tears. My best friend and I were neighbours and first met ten years ago. We were both the only nerds in the neighbourhood; always picked last when the others were playing football or other sports. But, we spoke the same kind of language, and had overlaps in many things we were fans of.
Chills all over. My best friend is an ardent fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars, and taught me that the two fandoms need never be mutually exclusive.
0.51 I just have to stand up and salute, tears in my eyes as we watch that torpedo casing flying off into the stars and the sun coming out from behind the planet
What always gets me about this scene is how well done it was on Shatner's part. Let's be honest, he is a terrible actor. I love him as Kirk and will always have him as my captain of choice, but he really outdid himself in this scene.
*headshake* I think Shatner is a brilliant actor...when he's playing Kirk.
He knows the part so well, he literally is Kirk...but his best scene has to be when he sits opposite Spock in the engine room. That look of 'stunned' says it all.
Kirk's was so empty that made me almost shout "KKKKHAAAANNNNNN!!!!" for only he (or a terrible writing team) could see one of popular culture's greatest heroes in the last century die that way...
@obiwanobiwan13 It's interesting for me to remember when this came out how silent the theater was during this after all the cheering & clapping during Khan's battle. There were literally a dozen people around us that just looked lost, and all of them were crying. Even though I was sad about Data's sacrifice, I guess I felt it more with Spock because I grew up with him...with all the original crew. It would not be as powerful a scene, in my opinion, without this music.
@opus289 idk kind of glad he did not stay dead but if he did die there would be no star trek 11 and wow thats porably going to be one heck of a story to tell his younger self oh btw we um kind of die... later on lol. but are brought back to life.
@obiwanobiwan13 Believe it or not it was not the writers who wanted spock dead. It was Nimoy himself actually he got tired of his role and wanted to go out with a bang.Otherwise he woud´ve probably looked like an asshole. A few years later he actually came back for Star Trek III but only if they gonna put him in the writting process. After the third Movie he regained interest in his role and even DIRECTED alongside with gene roddenbery Star Trek IV:The Voyage Home!^^
@TOK150 LN was not the one who wanted Spock dead. The first time he heard they were making another ST movie was when someone came to him and said "we're making another ST movie, how'd you like a beautiful death scene?" When he saw it, he had tears streaming down his cheeks.
He directed 3 and 4 (by himself) because he wanted to give something to ST as LN, not just as S.
Your info comes from rumors which came from the fact that LN wrote a book called "I am Not Spock"
I saw the movie about 3 times the first weekend it came out, and the last was with my mother, a closet trekkie.
She had recent buried her mother, and this tune was played at the funeral. During this scene I turned to see her weeping. One year later we lost my mother to cancer.
To this day Amazing Grace causes me to well up, if not start bawling. In this movie version, the swell as the casket/torpedo goes into orbit is what gets me.
The bagpipes were flat, smart ones...anyways, despite being a band kid in school, I look past that and hear a beautiful melody, formerly a black spiritual, that is used to show God's grace to undeserving wretches like us humans... (sorry, I think somewhat like a Calvinist)

Why this short and beautiful piece is not included on the re-edition soundtrack for P II I cannot understand. It's beautiful.

I love the way the bagpipes are slightly sharp,
then the orchestra comes iin slightly flatter.

Capt. Spock: Do not grieve Admiral, it is logical. The needs of the many....outweigh
Adm. Kirk: The needs of the few
Spocl: Or the one.
