I am so jazzed you're going to be in SouthTube. I will be there too and am really excited but nervous too. I started running again, also inspired by Gary, and after a nasty knee injury from too much too soon as you said I am loving it. I think you and Gary going on a run together will be epic! So fun for you both!
It is the knees I worry about when you "pound the streets", but other people seem fine, but I think I would rather cycle and see the world quicker, or walk and see the world slower! But mostly, I agree with pappystu!:)
I agree the first step out the door is the hardest. Your warning is wise. ;) I learned the hard way during my first or second week of jogging last year.
The benefits of regular exercise are wonderful: more energy, better endurance, strength, lung capacity, etc.
It's amazing how much better i feel for doing this again & i didn't think i was that unfit really. It just goes to show how unfit most of us are without us realising it :)
Never had much luck with Nike shoes so I've stayed with Reebok. I don't run but I do ice skate. Skating and playing hockey has been my favorite pass time for many years. Perhaps we all need to find an activity that keeps us young and keeps us going!
It's lovely that you have a nice beach front to job along! Sounds nice! :0)
Oh goodness, Andy. Looks like you need a new pair of running shoes!
I have recently joined a walking group that does evening walks at parks around the area a few days a week. If I don't do that, hubby and I get the dog out on the trail behind the house for a quick half mile.
LOL Yes i seem to be on a bit of a roll & you're no slouch either!
I think gym's are over-priced everywhere. I can never see the point of going to a gym & either walking, or running on the treadmill & paying for the pleasure. Why not just walk, or run to the gym instead.
I agree -- I lost almost 100 pounds a few years ago and it got to the point where if I did not exercise, I felt guilty -- it had become such a routine. Unfortunately I had a back injury so had to limit a lot of stuff -- and now that I can do more, have to get my foot out the door again. Haven't quite done it yet -- but the people on here are definitely an inspiration and I'm sure I will (I hope -- lol)
I loved the vlog Andy. The inspiration is definitely a two way street! After that race I did a couple weeks ago, I decided to take almost a week and a half off...by calves were starting to bother me and my shins were hurting all the time. I realized that I'd been doing the hardcore exercising non-stop since the beginning of the year. I just needed a break. Now I'm even slowing my training down a bit..taking a day off between jogs just to not pound my body so hard.
As for us "competing" with each other in Chicago and Nashville...LOL....well, my friend, I hope that we will happily be running side-by-side with each other (we need to keep things easy for Mike who will be recording it for YT!). I'd be fearful of even trying to beat you running, as I know what kind of experience you have! By the time we do this, I'll have run my 1/2 marathon and who knows what kind of shape I'll be in!! You have to love inspiration! Great vlog my friend. :)
I think it may have something to do with the nature of the motion itself, work fine for conversation but less so for sight seeing. I don't mind bicycling solo or hiking...
I never really liked running. I trained for Track in high school but didn't stick with it. I used to do a lot of mountain biking when I was younger and Gary's training video last month got me to dig out the old bike. I've been going out almost every day after work and having a blast--but the first time out was torture, I couldn't believe how out of shape I was. Good luck with the running but if you're going so fast that you shoes are disintegrating maybe you should borrow a pair from Hermes.
My training video got you to start biking again? RIGHT ON. Wow!! I'm laying here kind of hung over right now after having gotten little sleep last night...and have no been inspired to run this headache away! :)
Yeah, "Training for the 1/2 Marathon."-it looked so nice to be outside that I just had to get out myself. I work nights and get home just before 7am so an early morning ride right after work has been perfect.
Wow. That's great. I have to start work at 7 AM and have tried running in the morning. I love the peacefulness of it, but it's just too early for me to get up considering how late I always stay up. Sleep cramps my style!
I'm envious that you live so close to the beach and can hear seagulls from your open windows!
Good for you on the running. I think it's funny that both shoes were protesting the running by tearing up like that. Maybe they just wanted to walk! :)
Seriously, when I played soccer, I dreaded the constant running but loved the game. Some people are built for different things. My brothers were all football players. :0)
Good for you, Andy! I gave up on running... but I have my bike (less impact) and my kayak (very aerobic). I hate to run. Be careful out there ;) Oh, and my Gram is 91. Just broke herself out of rehab. She's still active and lives alone.
your so not 5o! lol i dint think you was 50 i honestly thought u was younger

I must admit i'm already getting excited as well.
Good for you for running again. You'll have to join as running around Nashville :)

Are Stiens popular there? vbg
PappyStu 3 years ago
Unfortunately not, just the good old pint pot, shame as it would save on trips to the bar!:)

LOL Anthony. The knees do take a bit of a battering, but hopefully they will hold out for a bit longer yet :)
andymooseman 3 years ago
If y'all had Stiens the knees would hold out longer...

I used to run marathons.... I prefer drinking good beer and fishing now...

Don't worry Pappy, i'm still rather partial to a decent beer as well! :)

Amen to that Sir!:)

Yes, i agree. It's good to have something that keeps us active, whatever that may be :)

You're inspiring me. I've quit working out since the beginning of summer because of the hot weather. But, you got me think to start again. Thanks!

I think i'll stick to running mate. It sounds like more fun! :)

Running really hurts my legs. I prefer to cycle or swim. Low impact excercise is the way to go.

I agree that low impact is a good thing. I just prefer running & it's something that i took to straight away :)

It certainly helps having the seafront so close. It does make it easier to get out of the front door.
Good for you for getting out there & doing some exercise :)
andymooseman 3 years ago
That shirt looks familiar. It's as if I just saw it only an hour ago in another video.
;-)
WOW, 90 years old and only now starting to slow down?? That's utterly amazing.
And I'm with you on the gyms. Don't know how expensive they are where you are, but over here they're INSANE.
Oh, btw, if there IS a race, let me know. I'm not usually a gambler, but I'll gladly play the role of Bookie for that one.
;-P

Wow. That's a lot of weight to lose.
As i said, the hardest step is the one out of the front door. After that it's plain sailing!
I hope you do it as well Danny :)

I was only joking. Anyway, we'll have to run at a speed that we can still talk!
Does Mike know what he's letting himself in for? Is he in training as well!?!
I've now got to go & buy a new pair of running shoes & it's all your fault :)
andymooseman 3 years ago
1 - The best thing for shin splints is rest. As i learnt, too much too soon is only a bad thing.
I've had to be pretty careful with how i've approached my training. Only twice a week, so far. I'm only now starting to increase the distance i run.
Luckily i had a friend who diagnosed what my initial problem was & came up with the solution :)

I never liked running, especially solo...
But, I do keep threatening to get the bike down.
TimberGeek 3 years ago
I know lot's of people who either don't like running, or who don't like running alone. I can understand that.
I've always been happy with my own company, so it's not a problem for me.
In some ways, i actually prefer running alone. I can then go at my own pace :)

LOL I didn't think i was going that fast! It's very strange that they both gave up within approx a half mile of each other.
Good for you on getting out on the bike. As i said. You don't realise how out of shape you are, until to try & do some exercise :)

I love running along the beach. Especially when the tide is out, as it was today.
It's also better for you, as there is less impact on the body.
Don't worry, i've got my own back on the shoes. I've thrown them in the bin!! :)
andymooseman 3 years ago
I've never been a jogger (body type not for it). But I loved playing softball. I like doing yoga and walking. I need to do more :(
Keep going Andy!

Luckily my body type is suited for running :)

I did have a bike. But, i enjoy running, so i came back to that again. Running gives me time to think & there is also a sense of freedom about it.
The high impact side of it is a worry though.
I have a friend who does kayaking. That sounds like great fun :)

I've been canoeing and kayaking practically since I could walk (dad's business) so it's what comes natural. ;)
