  • Good stuff. Seems as if right about this point they listened to PIL's "Metal Box" and Forbes, McGee, and Burchill all realized they could play like that ... and they made some great sounds for a couple of years.

  • superb !! the best live band !!

  • The bass is the best thing aboooot this song

  • Although a bass man myself, I really love that dragging hi-hat in Factory

  • C'était la bonne époque, là !

  • wow what a treat, fantastic!!!

  • factory is such a supercool song

    one of my favourites ever

  • They were such a brilliant band back in the day . "Reel to Real Cacophony" is my all time favorite LP by them. some of the most edgy, nervous and original post punk circa 79/80 " Empires" was also awesome. It all went wrong when the original bassist, synth player and drummer left the band circa 1982.

  • @abagail4me petty details but; bassist Derek Forbes went in 85, drummer Mel Gaynor's been more or less steady since 82, keyboardist Mike Macneil left for vacation in 1990 and never returned... ;-)

  • I cannot believe this was 31 years ago!!! I was there!!! Thank you for posting.

  • trop fort, vraiment excellent

  • fantastic songs!

  • Kerr was so perfect here. That face and style.

  • I missed their Stockholm concert 1979 (due to the damned military service:( and they didn't return until 1982. So better late than never to see this great 1979 clip.

    Merci beaucoup!!

  • Simply the BEST!!!

  • charlie and jim are fantastic

  • my brother took me to see them and i was 12...the bass made me go mad then when derek started...

    i was 12...42 now

  • What a chance for you! For me indeed the BIGGEST puts together pop rock which can exist still has the present time!!!!! I was 17 years old when they reunis. I do not miss them when they pass has Paris. I would like them jusqu' has my last breath!!! They are geniaux:

  • @craigtoun1 You lucky lucky lucky lucky pr!k!!!!!!! ;) I didn't get to see them until '89 in Melbourne. I wish I had seen them before like you. Treasure those memories.

  • how good they were

  • Awesome stuff

  • better than Joy Division!:-) I love them!

  • awesome sounding

  • jim kerr looks like howard devoto...

  • How can such a raw underproduced arrangement sound so good? Shame they forgot.

Jim's dancing hasn't changed in 30 years either

  • FANTAAAASTIC!!

    PURE GOLD!

  • See? They really WERE the best band in the world for 10 mins back in 1979! Love this...

  • CLASS CLASS CLASS!!!

  • That Bass is orgasmic.

  • A welcome debute from this scottish superband. The early days Simple Minds, a Premonition you will never forget. Great song!!!

  • just how good are dezza's bass lines

  • OMG OMG I just LOVE Factory, I just love it thank you thank you!

  • Wow, the real deal!!! Love this so much! Thank you!

    <3

  • Outstanding! Just a shame we live in a warped reality where u2 got mega big and green day fill arenas with power chord songs.

  • Premonition just ROCKS! What a great tune!! I love the melody they come up with at 1:46 and 3:17

  • Merci, c'est génial!

  • I've got these on DVD and play them daily. But to see them on youtube is BRILL!!!!! thanks......

  • this is great to see, the Steve Hillage produced Sons and Fascination and Sisters Feelings Call are the high points for me, though New Gold Dream has some great production it doesn't have the same impact. Here they really show up the lack of imagination out there on the "bands" circuit , the majority of whom are aping what happened 30 years ago.

  • Sept 79 Erics, Liverpool

Start of the the New Gold Dream- doesn't get better

  • Woo, that sounds great. I didn't know that Simple minds had had a period like this. It is really interesting, even now. Never took them too seriously, but this video proves the old theory, that the first years of any good band are the best.

  • wonderful, really honest and what sounds x

  • At their best circa 1979-1980 :)

  • the early simple minds was great because Jim doesn't have the greatest voices... which was alright in the early non-melodic sound of the SM. Once they started to write more melodic... it was painful by times...

  • i share the same opinion as you

    Excellent live perfomance.

    That reminds Joy Division

  • He met the world.

  • you are right.

  • love that early jim kerr. his eyes are youthful and true.

    a man on a mission.

    oh what happened?

  • yeah, I know what you mean but he does still have an optimistic charm these days. He still dance the same!!

  • LOL he also still winds the microphone cable round his hands and arms.

  • Up until now I have felt bad enough about the Simple Minds events I have missed while old enough to see them, but these archives make me even more sorry I missed them when I was nine!!! Superb stuff....

  • awesome viewing of simple minds early days how did you manage the quality sound as good then as now live. dodgy haircut though looks like mr bean lol

  • Genius

  • too bad i couldn't be there... but i had just been born! :D

  • great music of a great nband in their early years though.

  • I was there in the front row with Iggy....what a night!!Ruth Polsky booked the band and it was there first time in the States....filmed for TOGWT.

  • Great early stuff from SM!!! They also did a great listening job to the early Roxy Music...check it out!!!

  • Fantastic stuff, they were doing in 1979 stuff that nowadays stupid music critics call 'new' and 'exciting'. Pah!

  • spot on

  • Nice, nice, nice, brings up menmories!!

  • Simple Minds early stuff was the best!

  • Early stuff like this - fantastic ! Later stuff - bollocks ! Belfast child...give me strength.........

  • this was the start of something fantastic, that is very much alive and kicking today.

  • excellent stuff. From this to the blinding beauty of New Gold Dream, it was going so well and then they met Steve Lillywhite & Bono...doh!

  • A great song and a great band.
