@0.58 You can hear some numpty shout..."is that all you got". obviously thinks he can pitch faster/better. Hmmmm! i don't think so mate unless he was talking to the batter lololol.
Not 105. Stadium radar guns add 3 mph to every pitch. I would know because my dad works in the MLB as a statistician for the angels. The raise the speed for marketing purposes.
Today's pitch speeds are measured from 50 feet away from the plate, but Ryan's was measured at 10 feet. Pitch speeds drop 8-11 mph (average 9 mph) from 50 ft away to the front of the plate. So we must add 6-8 mph to the speed measured by Rockwell in order to be equivalent to today's readings.
Therefore, Nolan Ryan's pitching speed as measured today would be at minimum 106 mph and could have been as high as 110 mph.
The only thing to note is that the 105 pitch went for a ball. I'm sure a couple others could throw 105 and not hit the strike zone, but he threw a strike for 104, so I guess it's close enough.
by the time the ball comes out of his hand, it seems like the ball is aleady in the catchers mit. I feel sorry for any guy who tries to time and hit his fastball. And on top of that he has a FILTHY slider to go along with it. He just needs a 3rd pitch and he'll be pretty much unhittable.
@mandora45 A third pitch? Hell no. There's not a human being in the universe who can hit a 105 mph fastball or even 104 or 103 for that matter, unless they time it luckily; it's simply too fast. It hardly matters if it's a ball, they have to guess every time. Two pitches is just fine for him.
@josephcamp100 I think he'll be alright as long as he can throw a 100+ mph fastball for his entire career. Once he starts losing velocity on his fastball he needs to find a 3rd pitch. I just hope he doesn't get hurt with all the torque he puts on his elbow. I mean look at what happened to Joel Zumaya...that dude just relied on blowing people away with his fastball until he completely blew out his arm.
his slider is nearly as impressive . If he learns to locate a little better and can keep the ball down he will be as good as it gets . Oh , ...and GO REDS IN 2010
're crazy I have 25 years of watching baseball and never seen anyone pull 115 mhp and if it shows you what the evidence sickles to see bloody idiot liar
Fortunately I was sitting in the second level seats and was able to record both the record pitch and the radar board. But there was another record set on this night. Chapman threw 25 consecutive 100+ mph pitches. Check my video link for most of that record-breaking sequence.
This is not pitching... this is throwing. We will see how long this lasts lol. Of course some shit franchise like the Reds would act like this is going to carry them or something. Nobody throws 100+ and has a long career... nobody. This is way more than the human body can take.
@redbuffalo15 what about ryan, he pitched for 20+ years, and he could run it up around 100 in his prime, the thing that makes this guy stand out is he has better control than ryan did at 22.
@wdhoctor ryan lived in the 90's... he only pitched over 100 when he had to. thats why his career lasted so long... no pitcher throwing/pitching 103, 104 or 105 will have a lengthy career, especially if its every pitch. yeah ryans control wasnt great but he wasnt known for being a finesse pitcher... he was known for getting K's
@redbuffalo15 Good point, but look at Nolan Ryan. He threw at or around 100mph and had a long, healthy career. It's all about mechanics...but I think this guy is going to end up like Zumaya.
@aethrio same with randy johnson... he could easily hit 100+... but pitching that hard wares your arm out like no other.... you look at their averages its all mid to low 90s.
@ImOfNope Ha. What hurt Chapman was the total ineptitude of the Reds' normally reliable defense. Plus, Utley got a bogus free base from that 0-2 pitch that didn't hit him. And yet again, he refused to use his slider. That 0-1 slider to Utley leading off the inning was unhittable, but it was the only one he threw.
The scary thing about him is that his fastball is arguably his second best pitch. You should see his slider, which he obviously didn't go to during this at bat.
Actually this is the second time he threw 105. Chapman threw 105 in a minor league game about 2 weeks before he was called up to the majors. It's going to happen again, keep an eye on #54 next season! :D
