I absolutely agree - most drivers follow "the rule of the Australian roads" - if you are stopped they will stop and ask if you are ok. Compared to some Australian roads, this road is not isolated.
just take it easy, refuel at every opportunity (seriously - do not pass a gas station, the next one may be out of fuel) and enjoy it. Let me know how it goes when you have done it, we really enjoyed it, if you hunt on our blog there is more info patandpaulharvey.blogspot.com somewhere around July 2009

fantastic ! what is the road in general like man ? , im driving from sydney to port hedland next month in a kombi and im scared as hell of breaking down in the middle of nowhere ! . . . how far apart are the servo's ? is there much traffic on the plain ? cheers :)
@NarleyDude07 The plain is very isolated but there is a lot of vehicle traffic and everyone checks if any stopped vehicle is ok. Breakdown costs are very high because the nearest towing center can be a long way away. Servos are never too far apart (200ks at most) but do not push your vehicle and whatever happens, do not drive at dusk, night or dawn because too many animals commit suicide by jumping out in front of you. Road surface is good. Enjoy it
@paulrutterfordharvey , thanks matey ! :) , i can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that i wont be in too much strife if anything bad does happen . . . im excited ! , people say if your a true aussie , then crossing the plain is quintessential lol .
