  • @SpoonyFanClub not dave :)

  • but the amount of time he puts in is worth it. im just torn between feelings...

  • I think dave really deserves to make some money off this, but i also loved that it was free. now 99c is not a lot of money, bht im 14 so i dont have paypal or acces to one. i just hope somehow ill find a way.

  • Much success Dave and thanks for all the great stuff over the years!

  • I support you, Dave!, otherwise i don't like to have a 90 seconds of a riff without an explanation and pay for it. I would let the riff sample free, and then pay for the explanation, but its only my opinion. but you deserve to receive money for the "extended riffs", that cost you too much time. Good luck Dave!

  • Top man, top musician, 6 years for free, amazing

  • Any teacher, dave, Marty Schwartz Justin sandercoe, any guy who takes time to teach for free is going to heaven

  • SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

  • great teacher, great ideas...great price.

  • Thx for all Dave, I wish you good luck. From Brazil.

  • although i like the idea of you charging people to use your services, i don't really like that you are limiting access to the upcoming website as well. i think that you are a fantastic mentor and great at explaining what you are doing in each of your lessons, and why you do it that way. It's unfortunate that you don't feel like you have the time to swing into full production, and that you feel that your original camera setup isnt good enough anymore. However, it's your website and your lessons.

  • CHeers Dave. I think 6 years of lessons for free is more than enough.

You should be proud of ROTW and you deserve to be paid for your work.

  • Shit and was 6 years for free!!!! what else you want people he gave a lot for free! \

  • Dave Im with you man go for it!!!!!! you deserve it. knowledge its not for free and you knowledge counts buddy, also people needs to understand that we are Musicians that we need to survive and this is part of it making course and selling it how we pay the rent and the light food etc!!! Keep selling your shit I will keep supporting you all the way!

  • Give him some support. He's given more than enough for FREE! He never had to at all.

  • Dave is a great player, and has the credentials to match. As an instructor myself, I think you'd be crazy to not take advantage of this service paid or not. Really usable stuff for players of all skill levels, and you honestly can't get this kind of instruction for so cheap. Anyone that "quits" this service will be back fast....that's for sure

  • Dave...good for you man...I am happy to pay for all you do and for all you've taught me over the years. This will separate the men from the boys and that's a good thing because all the people that are bitching here (young and old..) probably haven't paid for your cd's or your merch. I would like to point out one key thing to everyone...this is Dave's JOB....Do any of you work for FREE?

  • can't wait for your app~

  • More than fair.

  • This is very understandable;( and a little bit of a pain in the ass for us European/Americans who use euro's and not dollars).I live in France and felt more-than-lucky to have your free lessons. I hope i can afford one dollar a lesson now, as i eat 'em up like cookies.'Cause i'm more than just an amateur.I play for a living, and i needed this like a cavity.Good Luck !

  • This is still waaaaay cheaper than getting traditional private guitar lessons from some local guy - who probably wouldn't be half as good as Dave.

Good luck to you, Dave. I hope you make a lot of money. You deserve it.

  • Well, needless to say, you can count me in!

I think it will be tough to capture new supporters without having a free service. People are pretty reluctant to give up their hard earned pennies (as we can see from the many negative posts here;) . So in my mind, the trick will be to get the word out about how great the paid service is.

At any rate, you can mark me down for your subscription service! I am looking forward to seeing where this will take you.

  • Well shit $60 a year is nothing I thought it would be a lot more.

  • Dave you are absolutely right. I actually respect you even more now than I ever did for you doing the right thing! Also, free is never perceived as high quality, so charging for a service, even though it's just 99c, improves the perception of it. I also went to your webpage and bought OnRevolute bundle with backing tracks too. Keep up the good work. Your CD sounds fantastic!!!! Playing and composition is very very good. Props man.

    - A musician.

  • I read the title of the video, saw the percentage of "dislikes" and knew instantly what he was going to talk about. However Dave has every right to market his lessons as he sees fit; you have every right to look somewhere else for guitar video lessons.

  • bandhappy yourself

  • You make a great product, Dave! Keep it up!!

  • Very understandable David, can't do everything for free ;) Good luck with it!

  • Dave, my subscription money is yours as soon as you'll take it.

One suggestion: The one thing Guitar World's LOTD has over you is that you get tab with every lick. If I pay for a subscription -- and I plan to pay for the highest level -- I'd like to see tab.

Also, I'm glad you're keeping the theory/talk portion going with ROTW extended. I would miss it if it was gone -- I watch the ROTW videos and absorb a bit of knowledge even when they're beyond my playing ability.

    THanks!

  • @mmoncur he posts the tabs for almost every week on his facebook ROTW page

  • Dave Im with you

  • To everyone freaking out over the new change, please do the following: Go back to Riff of the Week Ep1 Season 1, watch it. Then the following week, watch Ep2.

Keep this up for the next 310 weeks. 6 years from now, start again....

What Dave does is well worth $4 a month.

  • Dave, I'm not sure you understand how many free quality lessons are available via the internet. I couldn't imagine anyone actually paying for a guitar lesson these days. Obviously you feel like you can make make a few dollars doing this and you probably can. Kudos to you, but i'll keep my dollar and continue to enjoy the plethora of free lessons youtube has to offer.

  • @JohnFritzler - It's about quality and no one does it better than rotw imo. the dude is a guitar institute of technology grad and professor and tours with fn vai!! there aint any one else on the planet with those credentials

  • @inagardenfly I'm familiar with Dave's credentials and by no means am I disputing his skills. I just can't bring myself to pay for a lesson when so many quality lessons are available free of charge. I found the simple single camera view videos just as informative and helpful as the multiple camera view videos.I don't blame Dave for trying to make more cash, he's worked hard at his craft and deserves it,but I simply cannot support this venture.

  • Fuck! Suppose I'll subscribe though. Totally worth it.

  • everyone is entitled to their opinion, but IMHO, guys who are not happy should just unsub and dont say anything bad. If they want to say anything, it should be thanking Dave for all the free and helpful videos and then adios amigo!

  • @fursua I'd be a lot less upset if the past videos that were once free weren't removed, there is nothing wrong with wanting to be paid for his hard work from here on out, i just don't think its fair to take the videos that used to be free and making them paid.

  • @hillbillygenius72 - didn't you watch the vid "genius"? He said ROTW will only be on the ROTW youtube channel from now on. All the vids are there.

  • @inagardenfly first, the genius part was just added on as a sort of oxymoron, people don't typically think of hillbillies as geniuses, i don't actually think of myself as a genius. And i must have misunderstood what it was that he said, human beings make mistakes.

  • @hillbillygenius72 i agree with you mate. you are not happy but you are not saying bad things. i am referring to guys who are leaving comments, as if Dave owes them and he has not been helpful to them in the past.

  • @hillbillygenius72 i don't see what isn't fair about it.

even though Dave offered them for free before, they are still his intellectual property to do with as he pleases, including making them part of his subscription service.

now if you don't see them as a value anymore because he's making you pay for what was once free, that's fine. but that's all you. your deal.

as far as Dave and HIS videos though, its all "fair". offering them free never meant they're forever "yours" to have for free.

  • @TalbotAlligator I don't know, I'm kinda getting over it, its just a shock of a change after all the years of free lessons.

  • I wish the archive was at least free still. I mean I don't mind the paid subscription for future videos, but i don't feel the removal of archived episodes was necessary.

  • good luck, Dave. i'm sure no one likes to pay if they can get it for free. but what you've been doing deserves to be bought.

  • ha thats 4 bucks a month im ok with that

  • I totally understand where Dave is coming from. The problem you're talking to a new generation of people that are expect to be given everything for free. Most of the generation of kids don't think they have to pay for ANYTHING. It's going to kill the music, television and movie industries eventually.

  • I'm in!

  • Chris Brooks here. I cannot *believe* the beating you guys are giving Dave. It's 99c for crying out loud. Smoke one less cigarette, eat one less chocolate bar. If you don't think it's time to give a little back, then sorry leeches - the blood stops here. You're lucky you got this free resource for as long as you did. Albums don't sell, information does. Good luck Dave.

  • @chrisbrooksmusic Damn right. So much for so called fans sticking by artists. Dave deserves 6 years worth of praises for only charging 99c per week for top quality tuition.

  • @chrisbrooksmusic Are you actually surprised by the people who are bitching? We live in the age of people who regularly steal shit on the Internet and see nothing wrong with it. Of course not everyone does this, but A LOT of young people do. The idea of paying for someone's hard work is alien to them, and anyone who sells something on the Internet is automatically a greedy asshole. It's a shame, really.

  • People need to accept that musicians WORK HARD to get where they are. This whole free music revolution is a fad, and hopefully won't be around for much longer. Even the Government is getting in on stopping this... It's a joke !

People just need to stop being so lazy... For example: Shopping at Wal-Mart to save 20c while your next door neighbours' business goes bust.

GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE, think on a bigger picture... PLEASE !!!!

    Much Love To All :)

  • if its only being cost at 99 cents why wouldnt you put a video onto youtube to keep ur subscribers then the video is a link to a website that you use ad's so u can keep it free and still make revenue, if u promote it enough u will earn plenty of revenue

  • Listen, I teach music for a living and for the work you're putting in, it's not really a bad deal. I do hope you get alot of business. Everybody's got a right to make a living.

  • Thanks for these 6 years of videos, dave. Good luck with your new project.

  • Dave, ignore the haters, you deserve to be paid. I have the lick of the day app, and it's nice, but the licks 9 times out of 10 suck. I might have missed you saying this, but will you make an app version? It would be much more convenient, though I am still in favor of subscribing to these lessons if it's not.

    Thanks Dave.

  • Dave your lessons have always been great because of your explanation of the theory. i am not interested in 90 seconds of put your fingers here.I wish you luck because you have provided a great service but I won,t be subscribing

  • for example, i'm in Venezuela, i watch this videos all the weeks, here in my country even 1dlr its a lot of money, plus we have a change control and if you have the money still is not easy buying stuff, i know how difficult is being a musician and make our living based in free stuff, i can understand you dave, but im afraid that i cant afford it anymore!! so thank you, wish you the best of luck !!!

  • I've been enjoying your lessons for the past two years and I want to sincerely thank you for posting them for free, but unfortunately I won't pay even thought I understand your decision. The "theory-talking" in your videos was by far my favorite part, I won't pay 52$ a year for brief 90 seconds videos without any theory explanation.

  • @drook666 Dave has become quite the salesman, "not even a dollar but 99 cents!", ur um... that penny won't even add up to a full dollar over the course of a year! At 90 seconds, this will leave ROTW (basic) with only a grand total of 78 minutes over the course of a year. I noticed he didn't say (or I missed it somehow) how much the other "levels" would cost.

  • Dave, I understand what you're doing and I COMPLETELY under the whole "starving musician" thing. However, it's not that we can't fork out a buck a week, its just that lots of people just don't have a way to pay money online or an online banking service. They should just make a system where we throw change at our computer.

  • :( broken promises

  • Hey Dave. ROTW is a very high quality resource and I have really enjoyed it over the last couple of years. Thanks for the huge amount of effort you have put in. I will have a look at your next offering and hopefully I can continue to learn from you.

  • Did you spend time recording this video?

  • I had a feeling from day one that this wouldn't last. As much as you said it would always be free and that you were going to do ROTW forever, I knew that wasn't happening. And to have to pay for less theory explanation and just the lick seems very silly to me. I could care less about the production quality. Those very first lessons you did from the Shove the Sun Aside days were very basic in quality but they were still some of the most inspiring material to me.

  • It would be very easy to blast Dave for his decision. However, he has the right to decide his own fate and charge for whatever he wants. But I feel this is a disturbing trend in music these days. "Cheap" guitar prices go up almost monthly, cd's are outrageously priced and a loan is almost required to see a concert anymore. I won't complain about not getting something for free, but I won't be subscribing either. I wish you luck Dave, but I'm very disappointed.

  • So let me get this right.

Less content and no explanation theory wise for a single lick..and we pay for it, then pay more for the theory explanation. Well this sounds like a big fuck you to me. I can see wanting the audio/video being in better quality but not paying for it if the time is cut back and no explanation.

Wish you the best of luck Dave. Sorry that you have lost a fan.

  • Darn it. just when i was starting to enjoy these lessons, especially with the theory explanation. oh well, back to marty, justin, and those weird people at next level guitar. :/

  • see you. Good luck.

  • I do see the value and understand it, and I do believe it is going to be gret, but yeah I am most probably not paying, now that I would have to pay for the lick AND rotwx... anyways, I learned A LOT this last 6 years and I am thankful.

  • You are making the biggest commercial mistake of the internet era... expecting people to pay for media.

  • Why don't you just get a student to mix it for free

  • So, I'm gonna have to pay a dollar for a 2 minute video of you playing a lick, and then, pay another $3 for the ROTWX for an explanation? so four dollars for however long the ROTWX video is plus 2 minutes? No thanks... If time was the biggest factor in keeping the quality the same, and keeping them free, why not do it less often? seems you could have came up with a different idea other than to have to pay for it... oh well, I'm over it... won't be subbing, but good luck...

  • hes right it will only get better... for people with money!

  • Comment removed

  • if i got to pay i want an hour vid every week!

  • With all the free guitar videos on Youtube I don't think even paying the ~$4 a month is worth it. Maybe with all the views and the type of fanbase the channel has you could use paid advertisements on the channel. A lot of revenue is there to be made you just have to market the videos the right way. I loved ROTW but this decision has made me decide to unsubscribe. Good luck in your future ventures and thanks for the effort these past 6 seasons.

  • "...We don't have the time to do these videos for free..."

The real problem is time, not money!

How will paying you give you more time to film in Hi-Definition?!

  • jam? dont forget the latency

  • er ok.

  • The riff of the week brought in sales of music, merchandise, lessons, brand awareness etc. He mentioned that at the very beginning. So even though the videos were "free", they produced income. They were "free"marketing that he didn't have to pay for other than his time. Youtube is an excellent marketing vehicle for artists. So far the dislikes are outweighing the likes. taking a hit in the fanbase, deserved or not. Perhaps scaling back to every 2 weeks or 3 or 4 would have been a better solution.

  • Am I understanding this correctly? ROTW is now a subscription service, with the subscription only buying you a 1/2 minute video? Then you have to pay extra for the real ROTW video? And all the ROTW videos are now going to only be on the subscription site?

  • I agree with you dave! Just don't take out this videos! When i got some cash i'll suscribe

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I didn't watch your videos for technique, I didn't watch them for you, I only watched them SOMETIMES when I thought, "Oh that concept may be cool to pick up and use eventually". After this? lol ya right I'm going to pay 52 dollars a year, just to hear you think of a little lick, you can expand into a longer 8 minute lesson, and THINK that it's going to make me better? Instead? I will take those 52 dollars, and probably buy the new Call Of Duty, and I will be happy.

  • Let me get this straight: You're making the videos shorter, and now charging for them? No thanks, Dave. We don't need the multiple HD camera angles. The show has been great the past 6 seasons when there was only 1 angle, & a simple sound setup. There are too many other free guitar video services on Youtube & otherwise that are just as good as yours. Sorry man, but I'm unsubbing, and won't be buying into this.

  • Dave, totally understand. I enjoy the full production of the video and the content. People don't understand that professional musicians need to pay the rent, and often times "bleed" money. Not only that, but also retirement plans, healthcare, food, and so on. Keep up the good work and 50 or so dollars each year is a fraction of what one would pay for regular lessons.

  • Thanks for all your hard work making these great videos over the years for FREE. I will be happy to pay .99 cents for lessons. And to all the complainers, where else can you get pro lessons that you can watch any time of day or night as many times as you want, as well as hundreds of other lessons for .99?

  • Am I the only one that actually liked the theory?

  • I don't blame you at all Dave, I made one video the best quality I could and I haven't found the time to make another one. You're not being stupid and greedy, you've been doing a video a week for 6 years! You've helped me so much and I can't thank you enough. The dedication you have to do this for 6 years is admirable. I perfectly understand your reasoning behind the charging.

  • I don't mind paying for videos, but its the format of the videos I'm a little concerned about; because it SOUNDS like the normal ROTW is going to be watered down to its bare basics and to really get anything from the videos, you must watch the ROTW extended videos. I think the whole 90 second lick thing should just be an addition to the website and not the basis of ordinary ROTW videos. Hope it helps:)

  • What you guys seem to not understand is that as a musician, we also need to pay taxes, we have to make a living no matter what. Sure we can have fun and do some free stuff but hey, we need to get money to live. I completely understand what Dave's doing and I agree with him, he's investing in a project (really interesting) but he needs to pay for it.

Being a musician is not all about charity, we work just as you do and we need money to live. Who's gonna work for free if you're not a billionaire?

  • Well, it was fun while it lasted. Enjoy having riff og the week fade into obscurity.

  • This is the beauty of capitalism. If people REALLY want it and see the value they will pay for it. If they do not, they will not. I'm going to keep subscribing to Dave, but I will not be paying for a lick of the week video. I actually haven't watched one in a long time. Best of luck on this transition Dave! I hope it works out well. For every person who doesn't want to pay for quality there are many who will!

  • bummer dave what a bummer. moust musicians (gutarists) are starving. if i could i would buy everying you have to offer, but i realy cant. in my opinion you are doing this a bit too early, i completly understand the whole bussiness side of things and the whole time is money factor, but with that said i cant. i purchest on revalute a while ago. but thats the best i can do for now. no doubt you are the best most informitive teacher on here. and it sucks seeing you get more and more money hungry.

  • Comment removed

  • Signing off, but good luck to you. I hope it works out.

  • Riff of the month?

  • I understand, I may not exactly wanna pay :p

But I completely understand y u need to do this and u have my support

  • Dave, you absolutely deserve much more that 99 Cents per week for your excellent work. Don't listen to those penny-pinching smart-asses who don't understand this outstanding offer that you've just presented. I hope you have great success with the ROTW subscription, I have no doubt that you will.

  • Your single camera shoot with "no audio mixed in" is still way better production than most lessons.

  • fair play, I say. Musicians should be able to make a living

  • Im a pro guitar player and I WILL pay for Dave's Lessons because they are 100% worth it... by the way I get the most out of the "talking parts" of the lessons, the licks themself are just a little bonus to the wisdom and inspiration Mr. Weiner provides ;-)

  • Amazing run your are a true credit to guitar players. Thank you

  • thanks dave. Ive been a ROTWer ever since the first one 11/30/05! thank you so much. I hope you understand that there just are way too many broke, dead broke, musicians out there now. I lost my jam space and everything. I just wish you went back to your 7 strings. Plus I have to ask.... can dave weiner djent? you know what that is? go for it riff master! DJENT one time.

  • Why all of You think that he should do these vids for free?? WHY?? Would You do the same??? I guess not.... so why do You expect him to do it??? I cannot understand those why think that they deserve free guitar lesson form the very best guitarrist on YT...

  • Pretty sure, if Dave was just doing it for the money, he would have stopped a long time ago...

Thanks for for the lessons Dave.

  • Our boy is becoming quite the business man. Oh how he's grown up. But 'aahh,..good luck with ROTW man. You deserve it.

  • why u waste time making the website and shit, when u could be making the videos

  • Er... Unsub. I'm done :(

  • just get a youtube partnership

  • @metachozoite got to ask then why have you kept watching for years if you've learned nothing? Anyway lots of people will benefit from his teachings its their choice and to attack Dave for trying to earn money doing his job is bizarre

  • will you return as David J.?

  • Sad... but understandable. Given the price, I might subscribe despite my funds.

  • So the short, "Here's the lick, here's the notes, have hun!" ROTW is NON suscription, right?

  • @GuitarDude892 no. It's over.

  • Comment removed

  • hey everybody this is what you do...buy a scale book or guitar grimour get yrou favs ongs learn how and why theyw ork...and you save youselfs a lot of money

  • you dont have to use all that fancy equipment dave....all your wanting is money it sounds like....no one gives an ass about the sound quality. some of the greatest schools in this world dont have the best eq. im not paying for anything to you. youve lost my views~ pocket change? .99 or 1 x 4 = 4 dollars. times 1000 customers is 4000 a month...your making WAY more then you let on...didnt you get enough playing for vai? Stupid & greedy. i wont be buying anythin from you~

  • @metachozoite are you kidding? Dave's been doing this for FREE for years and it takes ages to edit this stuff together once you film it, what is stupid is that people want everything for free when they could pay a small subscription and learn from a pro.

  • @guitarnoize learing from a professional( and this is from being an engineer ok?) is not always the best thing for people to do. He did it free it was his choise. now he found out he can make money, so hes gonna do that. Paying for lessons is stupid, and is a waiste of cash. just because youve been taught by someone like him...dosent mean a damn thing...Ive been watching hsi lessons for years...and they have done nothing for me i do better on my OWN.

  • @metachozoite

Found out he can make money? After 6 YEARS of doing free videos. I think he's entitled to do whatever the hell he wants. ROTW takes dedication, and I for one am grateful for all the FREE lessons he's made. Btw, If you've been watching his vids for years, and you've learned nothing. Guitar isn't for you bro, stick to trolling. Dave has the best guitar lessons on YT hands down. I've learned so much from his videos. I can't begin to describe how grateful I am for what he does. \m/

  • @metachozoite So why the fuck do u complain and watch his videos man? I saw your channel, got bored of 2 of your vids in the first 30 secs, crappy audio, worse vid quality and EVEN WORSE synch!!!! Man go fuck urself or try giving free classes for 6 whole years, then come back and tell us how u did.

  • @Vergucci i saw the video was intrested in it and was dissapointed with hsi decision. As for the videos...i dont have to prove shit to anyone here..just so you know...and i dont care about the quality. its the music that counts

  • @Vergucci your kissing ass because he played with vai...I do give free classes because i enjoy teaching others and seeingw hat they come up with...i dont care about impressing people on youtube... i do that on stage

  • @metachozoite I don't even like Vai, in fact I don't like Dave's playing either, but I know when people are dickheads, like you, and cant stand other people be good a sthg you aren't or just let them live from their WORK, why don't u go and ask your boss not to pay you for 6 years, would you do that? I'm sorry man, no offense, but if I was bored with vids you can record once and again, I don't think you can do much better on stage

  • And no i wasn't kidding.

  • @metachozoite I'm just curious - what is your calculation "1 x 4 = 4 dollars. times 1000 customers is 4000 a month" all about? Is it about you thinking 99 cents is too much for a lesson, or is it that you dislike that he will be making 4000 dollars for a video? I base my question on my most favourite psychology study, which I recommend to everybody: Ultimatum_game (Wikipedia)

Please note - I'm not judging here. I just find this particular kind of human behaviour quite interesting

  • @metachozoite Couldn't agree less. He's been providing a great service to all of us FOR FREE for the last 6 years, so to claim he's all about the money couldnt be further from the truth.

  • @metachozoite He's not obligated to do this for free, so I don't know where you get off thinking he owes you anything.

  • @metachozoite he's making money off of his hard work. how dare he?

  • @metachozoite It really isn't any of your concern how much money he makes in total. He's offering to provide a very high quality service. The value for money is almost unbeatable. Sound quality DOES matter. As musicians we should all understand this. I went to see my friend on campus today for £5. Dave is offering his service for a 10th of that.

Also, what greatest schools are you talking about!?! I really want to know!

  • @metachozoite What's your job dude and are you working for free? Nothing greedy about getting paid for your work ;-)

  • are the videos on the riff of the week channel staying up after the subscription service starts?

  • Don't you get paid for these videos through YouTube partnership?

  • @nemox00 do you click on the ads? No? nor does anyone else so the answer is probably not

  • First to say ... Awesome!

  • thank you

    this plan sounds great
