The story of this mans sacrifice and how he helped in Al-Anbar was the thing that inspired me to go into Army ROTC with the goal of becoming a Special Forces officer.
I had the honor of knowing Travis when we both went to DLI to learn Arabic. We had many good times, and broke a lot of bread together. He was as good a friend as he was a soldier; and he ALWAYS was there to help anyone out.
It saddens me to hear about Travis' passing. We lost touch as most do in the military, but he always stood out to me as one of the better soldiers and humans I came across in my 7 years in the Army.

The loss of Capt. Travis Patriquin and others with good intentions is sad and infuriating. Al Anbar is a worthless desert with people whose embrace will only last as long as we have guns and provide money. It's insane to expend so much on a fruitless recreation of a culture. Undoubtedly, our only imprint will be the half-American children our soldiers leave behind.
David Horowitz was a wack job extremist in the 60's and he's a wack job extremist in 00's. The only difference is he's switched party affilations, still the same wack job
Oh man, my heart just swells with pride when I see old glory flapping in the breeze....
NEWS FLASH.
The guy who made the powerpoint presentation is DEAD.
Is the irony lost on you?
Ain't nuthing like some armchair generals espouting BS that they know nuthing about. None of you will get it until the American Empire is unraveled by it's own hand. And even then you'll bitch and moan and blame "liberals."
I suggest people hope we win this fight with this new Iraqi inititive because if we don't... the only thing left to do is massive killing (nukes). We cannot accept defeat with all of our interests involved.
Eh. Sure wish the war was as simple as this video depicts. With rampant corruption in the Iraqi Police I don't think it's as smooth as the video want to portray.
So let's review... The following elements are to blame for the situation in Iraq: - Iraqi Sunni resistance - foreign fighters - Shi'a militias and Sayyid Muqtada as-Sadr - regular Iraqis (for not stepping up to the plate enough) - Syria - Iran - Saudi Arabia - American leftists, Democrats and anti-war types However there is one party that is absolutely guiltless: American right-wing nutjobs who attacked Iraq and their brain-dead hired mercenary child-rapist army.
You know what I don't understand? Getting the Americans out of Iraq is so easy. All the insurgents have to do is stop fighting. When there is peace, the Americans will leave. It's obvious that the insurgents DON'T WANT the Americans to leave--because fighting the Americans is their goal and desire.
How about screw Al Anbar...admit the war was a mistake and get the hell out of there. That's a more sensible option. Captain Patriquin shouldn't have had to die for this pointless war, and either should the soldiers who are going to die today and tomorrow, and until Bush is impeached or leaves office....until this idiotic war ends.
I know all soldiers are volunteers, cause I was one. But, while you look at the volunteers as fodder, I look at them as heroes...not worth wasting on a lost cause.
Will you take credit for the hundreds of thousands of people who will die following our withdrawl? or the regional war that we will be drawn into a few years from now? Anti-war types never think ahead.
jaguarbp, You didn't answer the question. If the usa leaves are you willing to take blame for the results of the action YOU support? You will also note I did not support nuking anyone.
I take the side of Al-Qaa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers, I am in favor of killing those who collaborate with the crusaders.
So yes, I am willing to take responsibility for all the treacherous scum that will be wiped out after the United States surrenders. A quick example of a dead man walking: Iraqi puppet PM, al-Maaliki.
People who supported the lost cause in Vietnam said the same thing. We left, and the area is fine. Do you think this region is different? Are they going to stop sending us oil if we leave and stop caring? No. The only difference is that US/Brit oil companies won't control it. We are fighting for the Bush-family&Friends Oilopoly...this war has nothing to do with our security or concern for our fellow man.
When will you idiots get that iraq is NOT vietnam?? But on that note, in vietname over 3 million died shortly after we left. The left refuses to take any responsiabilty for the results of the action they demanded. The same will happen in iraq im sure
We left the area is fine? LOL who taught you that, go study about what happened after we left vietnam. Approximately 3.5 million people were murdered by the communist government.
So your solution is to keep fighing a lost cause? What does that do...we get a few years before the civil war starts, but the price is paid with soldiers lives. Look...the war is OVER, the USA LOST. Yes, the area is going to have a civil war causing much bloodshed (thanks Bush & all Republicans) now or later. Nothing will prevent it at this point - our demand to control their resources is what caused the instability. you can quit pretending to care about the people now.
Our boots on the ground would disagree with you. Yes we are losing the war politically but that is only because people like you keep declaring the USA lost, as happened in Vietnam. As a resultin in Vietnam 3 million people were murdered, if the same happens in Iraq will you recognize you had a hand in that?
You misunderstood, you don't have any blood on your hands yet.
But if we leave and all security is lost, hundreds of thousands if not millions will be killed. People will die that would not have died if the US had been there.
We have the capability to eliminate the guerilla forces and the forces envolved in the civil war, but people like you in the American public won't allow it.
You are deluded thinking we can 'kill all the insurgents'. Find any historical precedent that shows that is possible.
Look at Vietnamm, it started in 1954 and only got worse - cause the people of the country never supported the west (FRN/USA). If we stayed in Vietnam, we'd still be there. Same thing with Iraq - they will NEVER support our troops and it will only get worse.
But if that would work, could we save millions by sending the military into Darfur? Do you support that too?
That is where you are wrong, ordinary South Vietnamese fought along the United States during the Tet Offensive(which I bet you didnt know we won, the Vietcong gained no ground and were effectively destroyed as a military force)
Make no mistake the insurgents are extremely dedicated, but that does not mean the population does not support us.
To say either side had a clear victory in the Tet offensive is at best opinion, and even then simplistic analysis. The military/strategic gains/losses are debatable. It was definitely the turning point of popular support for the war, because it was a clear sign that the opposition wasn't just going away (as Westmoreland was promising). Definite similarities to Iraq (Bush/Cheney statements like - mission accomplished, insurgency last throes, etc)
Wars are won and lost on words, this is proved by Vietnam. I do not understand what is wrong with Bush/Cheney using words as a weapon, Winston Churchill did, the insurgents do, Jane Fonda did. Beyond that the mission accomplished statement was true, we had deposed Saddam Hussein
If you believe in the cause so much, why aren't you fighting for it? Join the military and go.
Over 80% of non-Kurds think of the US military as 'occupiers' as opposed to 'liberators'. The insurgency would not exist as it does if it wasn't for this support.
Solution : Nuke every f*cking Muslim nation from Morroco to Brunei. In 50 years, we can use their glassed sand dunes as a giant tourist skate-board park.
buying allies in the me isnt a new idea, these guys just werent exactly the 1st candidates on the list. Soldiers speak for tactics, not strategy. I was a soldier and know the esprit de corp & survival is more important than evaluating the grander cause.
Stop denying reality. We lost. We'll never win & it will only get worse. The only sensible thing we will do in this war is end it.
