I had the honor of knowing Travis when we both went to DLI to learn Arabic. We had many good times, and broke a lot of bread together. He was as good a friend as he was a soldier; and he ALWAYS was there to help anyone out.

It saddens me to hear about Travis' passing. We lost touch as most do in the military, but he always stood out to me as one of the better soldiers and humans I came across in my 7 years in the Army.

But if we leave and all security is lost, hundreds of thousands if not millions will be killed. People will die that would not have died if the US had been there.

We have the capability to eliminate the guerilla forces and the forces envolved in the civil war, but people like you in the American public won't allow it.

You are deluded thinking we can 'kill all the insurgents'. Find any historical precedent that shows that is possible. 

Look at Vietnamm, it started in 1954 and only got worse - cause the people of the country never supported the west (FRN/USA). If we stayed in Vietnam, we'd still be there. Same thing with Iraq - they will NEVER support our troops and it will only get worse.

But if that would work, could we save millions by sending the military into Darfur? Do you support that too?

That is where you are wrong, ordinary South Vietnamese fought along the United States during the Tet Offensive(which I bet you didnt know we won, the Vietcong gained no ground and were effectively destroyed as a military force)

Make no mistake the insurgents are extremely dedicated, but that does not mean the population does not support us.

To say either side had a clear victory in the Tet offensive is at best opinion, and even then simplistic analysis. The military/strategic gains/losses are debatable. It was definitely the turning point of popular support for the war, because it was a clear sign that the opposition wasn't just going away (as Westmoreland was promising). Definite similarities to Iraq (Bush/Cheney statements like - mission accomplished, insurgency last throes, etc)
