He is singing about being the guy in the background, the guy who will do anything and everything for her out of love but the opportunity never shows up or it falls just short and someone else is always there; he is stuck there, left holding the bag and overlooked. He is representing true love being right there in front of her but she can't recognize it until it really matters at the end for where the love really lies.
