  • Say what you like but the keyboard in this song is simply brilliant. yeah the Bass is just a keyboard Bass Who cares...! This song is about the rhythm, the groove and the key voicing progression.

  • MOTHERFUCKIN GREAT ASS SONG U.S.A!!! U.S.A!!! U.S.A!!!! UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is no room for vague reminiscences progressive traces,

the album is the first recorded in the study of properties of Genesis: The Farm, Surrey.

  • The way Phil says "door" at 0:48 gives me shivers.

  • Comment removed

  • Genesis hit #26 in Billboard, 2-20-82. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week!

  • The bass playing/synth in this song SUCKS. Moronically simplistic, especially for this band.

  • abacab......................full

  • abacab is the key signature of the song, kids

  • ..as we do it your never there ABACAB

  • what the hell does Abacab mean matter what the hell does ssusudio mean?

  • Doesn't mean anything, just phil collins's drunken ramblings... makes for good music at least....

  • amazing!!!!!

  • still love this song;

  • I like this song, it gets my brain thinking for some reason. But what was genesis's point behind the song exactly, I'm just curious what they were thinking when they wrote this.

  • love the song but hate the keyboard sound...it sounds cheesy like pizza hut cheesy crust pizza product

  • Get it while you can i say !

    yum yum yum

  • Listen to the words so cool, all the best phil .

  • After "Selling England by the pound", Genesis did nothing good at all. This song sucks, compared to "the knife" or "musical box".

  • one of their best songs

  • Hot smart pop!

  • Meaty, beaty and good.

  • I love the Gabriel years most of all, but the more I listen to the Collins era stuff, I like it more and more.

  • Where's the rest of the song at? It should have been around 7:33 minutes long.

  • get real

  • @DecepticonAvenger I guess it was the single edit.

  • Could anything be worse than this?

  • So why'd you take the time to find this video and post to it?

  • yer a faggola

  • Yes, you and everything else.

  • abacab, genesis rules....

  • My favorite video from my formative MTV years. Even at 10 years old, I was obsessed with angling my cymbal like Phil's.

  • Probably my crazy thoughts:

    ABACAB=A being A see A being A.

This is loop(watch the film "Bicentennial Man")

  • a cind of odd song to come from genesis... i've never heard something that sounds like this from them.... but it's awesome! :D

  • AWESOME

  • Live version have a much better ending section than this...nice song (best of Abacab album)

  • Depressive, how a great band ended doing this.

  • ivanprog... please explain yourself

  • I thought I had replied to your post Zaxxon, but seems not.

I can't understand how a band dedicated to write transcendental music, with clear compositional skills and valuable lyrics ended doing ABAB structure POP with IMO little artistic value.

But, it's their problem, they reached fame and fortune, maybe that's enough for them.

  • what can i say, ivan

    some people grow up/get older/change

hell... even Metallica cut their hair

  • Depressing that the Prog Rocker Club is so narrow minded sometimes. It's not the style of music that matters. It's the groove, melody, chord changes, hook, etc.

And that is present in the ENTIRE Genesis catalogue.

  • It's fun to listen how "Close Minded· we suposedly are, we listen the music that the rest of the world hates or simply ignores, that the magazines and sold DJ's consider "self indulgent and pompous" we love it, we care for structures and transcendence, if that's being close minded, I'm a proud one.

NMaybe the groove is enough for you, not for us, we want something more that top 40 designed for teem agers to buy albums by thiousands, we want something that will last much longer.

    Continues

  • But we are not nerds listening Prog 24/7 while playing Dungeons & Dragons as the sold media tries to make believe.

In my case I like different genres, love Classic Rock, some good POP like Buckuingham & Nicks Fleetwood Mac or Cranberries, but if I want to listen POP I buy a POP album from a Pop band.

I buy Genesis to listen Fountain of Salmacis, Can utility and the Coastliners, etc, not to listen an album where this guys play simple stuff to make money exclusively.

    Art is over all.

  • I was a music education major in college. Took 4 years of theory, sang Brahms, Mozart, Schubert...played contemporary jazz pieces that make early Genesis about as progressive as ABBA.

I could have become a music snob and taken pride in dissing "Pop" or I could be what I always have been-a fan of melodic, hooky music. If everyone could write "Hey Jude" they would. 'Simple to play' does not equal 'Simple to write.'

Music is an expression of the soul. Not a shield to mask identity issues.

  • Congratulations....And what?

Contemporary Jazz makes sound Genesis as progressive as ABBA?

Seems you don't know too much of Prog, Progressive Rock is a totally different genre than Jazz, so nothing could make sound Genesis less Progresive, it's like saying a Classical artist will make Louis Armstrong sound less Jazz, and that's absurd.

I also took Music in the University and have nothing against GOOD POP, I believe Collins Genesis is mediocre Pop compared lets say with Cranberries.

  • No identity issues, I'm good at what I do and I know it, so your comment is out of place,

BTW: ABBA (who seems you despise) had excellent and imaginative POP in their days unlike Collins Genesis which is boring, dull and repetitive.

Also mentiioned Buckingham & Nicks Fleetwood Mac and Cranberries, not precisely Prog but great bands.

But I don't have to like everything, I dislike Collins Genesis and I believe that in a free society I have the liberty to say it.

  • When did I say I despise ABBA? I think they were great. Just not very "Prog Rock"

  • You took "Music" in the University? Hmm.

Anyway, my point about performing music that would make early Genesis sound not very progressive is counter to your remark...and I quote "NMaybe the groove is enough for you, not for us, we want something more that top 40 designed for teem agers to buy albums by thiousands, we want something that will last much longer."

My counter to this is that there is much more obscure, varied and complicated music than Prog Rock-in many genres.

  • Not only in the university, studied piano for five years, played drums in an amateur band for some years, my Prog reviews can be found in many sites.

Again you prove your knowledge about Prog is very limited.

Obscurity has nothing to do with Prog, Pink Floyd has two of the top ten albums ever, Yes and ELP were massive in the 70's, but still Prog.

There are simpler bands as Yes, or you can go to search Henry Cow and is far more complex than almost anything I heard.

    Continues

  • The main issue of Prog is transcendence, to pass the test of time, it's obscure because most people rather hear Britney, Gangsta Rap or bland POP.

You have mentioned that Gabriel left Genesis 33 years ago, but still is remembered, Steve Hackett is among the most respected musicians, King Crimson still tour, Waters also, while Collins is semi retired because his glory is something from the past.

  • You're the one who equated Prog Rock to more difficult or complex music. You slammed Pop as having simple beats and being music made for teenagers.

And again...I'm telling YOU that if you want to pride yourself in listening to music with "structures and transcendence" you need to ditch the Prog Rock and start listening to Contemporary Jazz and Modern Legit or Classical Music.

But as for me I'll take the Phil Collins Genesis over Gabriel any day.

Guess it's just the kid in me...

  • Have you read my posts? I haven't slammed pop, I have slammed Collins Genesis POP.

I talked about structures, there are structures everywhere, complexity alone means nothing, you need a good melody also.

I honestly don't like most Jazz, except maybe Miles Davis, Jean Luc Ponty and Return to Forever, because they blend virtuosism with intelligent melodies.

I could talk about Classical all day, specially the Russian late XIX Century Nationalist movementt which is my favorite.

    Continues

  • But it's not the place or the moment.

And even when I love some Classical authors, Progressive Rock has captured me because I like Rock, people writing meaningful Rock, not silly melodies with an A-B-A-B structure.

You are entitled to like Phil Collins more than Gabriel, millions do, but you can't call those who believe Rock is more than music to dance close minded.

About ABBA your metaphor about them sounded as despise.

I love Genesis except post W&W era, maybe the musician in me.

  • You could DEFINITELY talk all day.

And that's the crux of this entire boring discussion. I don't care what you THINK you know about music or what you so desperately wish to project, you are a small minded fool who should be pitied.

    End of discussion for me.

  • If I'm such a fool, why you keep asking me?

Who is the real idiot? The one who has to be pitied or the stupid who asks this person why he said something?

You have called me close minded, a person who deserves pity, etc. So you care for what I think even when you say the contrary.

But when you run out of arguments and are proved you don't even read the posts, you start insulting and kick the chess board as an infant.

Thought you were an intelligent person, what a waste of my time.

  • You say this conversation was boring, but you insisted in replying :-)

And at the end as the cherry in the pie you say "End of discussion for me"

You started it, you followed it, you boasted you sung Brahs, Mozart, etc (If ever), then you act as a spoiled kid, insult and run away.

I won't say it was boring, it was quite funny specially when your lack of arguments was evident.

But I won't insult you, listen Sussudio until the end of times and have a nice life.

  • this is one of the best Genesis songs ever! what an awesome track :)

  • cool as fuck......

  • phil collins is probably one of the best artist of all time!!!!

  • Abbacab is the sole cheat code to be favorite sega Genesis game.

Funny I found this when I googled that.

  • I always liked videos like this the best. No silly story lines. No unneeded effects. Just the band doing what they do best.

  • Excellent!!!

  • Phil's great but he's got one con, he's bald.

  • Geddy, Neil and Alex must have written that song about him then ))))

  • Then they're very unkind to the poor old baldy Philie :PP

  • Phil's got the most amazing drum and cymbal sound on his recordings. His ping ride and china cymbal can cut through granite. LOVE this song.

  • Especially on songs like "In the Air Tonight" and "Turn it on Again" (as well as this one).

  • rock on razrg3 i was at that show too. It was awesome, i was a little pissed thta umphreys didnt do their normal style with two sets and then an encore, but they were time limited and were headlining equally with sts9 so what can ya do

  • Ouch this video's sound levels are very high. Nearly broke my eardrums.

  • same here, headphones are dangerous

  • Yes they are, and what's it matter to you anyway? You can't even f*cking spell!!!... "No THERE not"?? Go back to school.

  • i was totally at that Boston show and they did such a good cover Umphrey's is so good

  • umphrey's actualy did a really good cover oft his song on 7.26.08 boston MA

  • how is it not progressive, but all of you need to listen to umphrey's mcgee, that is where real music is at

  • In eternity that it didn't make #1 when it came out. I wish I would have had the 8 track in quadraphoenic. It'd be worth a fortune on ebay.

  • Hmm u need to listen to some floyd mate, this is not really progressive at all. =/

  • This song was so intense live. I was like, "Wow Genesis kicks enough ass that the U.S. military can take a vacation." Genesis is truly the greatest progressive rock band ever.

  • Knock it OFF! I could give a Damn about peter Gabrel... I came here to relax and to forget about my shitty week at the dentist and I am getting sick of the fighting... Geniseis is still great no matter who is at the helm... If he does not like Peter THAT IS HIS CHOICE... Some of you are bad as the Bee Gees Freaks...

  • Hi Frank as you thinks of our cover of Abacab!

  • I named my kitty Abacat. Every time I hear this song I think of her

  • LoL.. thats awesome :) cute.

  • Thank you for your kind comment.

  • No - the name of the song was derived from the original structure of the song, labeled by sections. They subsequently altered the song but kept the name anyway.

  • a great band

    a great song

  • Could somebody please explain to me what this song is about?! I know the lyrics, but after over a decade of hearing it I still can't figure out the meaning! The word "abacab" isn't even in the dictionary!

  • ABACAB isn't a word, it's an amalgam of the first notes Tony plays on the keyboard. What it means other than that, I dunno.

  • The long version rocks!!

  • Anyone who can play drums and sing is extremely talented >.>

  • @tovax thanks!

  • Che pallidissima copia dei veri Genesis !!! Quelli con Peter Gabriel erano fantastici.

  • EDIT: While not singing.

  • I get criticized for saying Phil>Gabriel

  • Because it's UNTRUE! No, seriously, it's all about taste, but I believe that Phil Collins was an excellent drummer.

  • its not "UNTRUE!" as you claim

Genesis was clearly more successful under Phil than under Gabriel

Peter Gabril is just a fruit loop, nothing more... while Phil has genuine talent

  • I didn't claim it to be untrue, please read again. I said it was only a question of taste. Also, Genesis' popularity is regional. Around here, Genesis prog era was much more popular.

On a singing technical point, Peter Gabriel is much better than Peter Gabrier. Peter himself stated that. Of course, Peter is an excellent composer, but he did compose a lot in their prog era.

  • you must smoke a lot of dope

" Peter Gabriel is much better than Peter Gabrier"

you cant even get your argument straight

    what a buffoon

  • Lol, wtf.... when did I write that?! That belongs to the most stupid things I ever heard and I said it.

Ok... well I'll rectify since I can't edit:

Peter Gabriel is technically a better singer than Phil, and Phil himself recognizes it. Then I don't understand what I meant.

    lol!

  • you are an idiot. Peter is just as talented as Phil, if not more. He's only a fruit loop to you because you're close minded.

  • no way man Peter gabriel is cool, look the likes of sledgehammer, i don't remember and shock the monkey they're awesome songs lol.

i don't think you can compare phil and peter, they both have different traits which made them great musicians etc :)

  • Genesis rulez

  • I love the keyboards in this song.

  • This is a great drumming song !!

  • jadore genesis vive la france

  • GENESIS still KICKS ASS! The sound is pure sterio even for You Tube... They better let this live on here forever....

  • One of my favorite Genesis songs.

  • Good song from their transition period

  • Great Song!...80's!

  • Great start!!! genesis at their peak

  • lol at their peak ? lolololololol, you don't know much about them then :O))

  • well im allowed to my own opinion arent i???

  • yeah man they're like assholes, everybodies got one :)

  • a great era for this once great band.

  • I love the part in the middle when there's only the music playing

  • K I usually don't listen to Genesis, but this pretty cool.

  • brilliant !!!

  • love how loud this is! the was the first vid i saw on mtv!!!!!!!!

  • hey guys if you liked this song check this one out is this song mixed with Faint from Linkin Park it's awesome:

"Naruto Vs Sasuke - Genesis Vs Linkin Park - Abacab Faint Mix" from CrimsonGears

    it's awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Boy does this bring back memories!

I seen the ABACAB tour at the Rosemont Horizon (just west of Chicago). I sat in an upper balcony and they were so loud my ears rang for 2 days. They were excellent and learned that Phil Collins is talented to the extreme.

    Thanks for posting

  • genesis...Phil Collins...enough said I guess

  • better than Gabriel

  • NO WAY

  • dont dis peter gabriel hes a legend among true genesis fans unlike you.

  • Always a good tune. And yes, I do the steering wheel drums.

  • I like the way each band member materialises into the video at the beginning :)

  • re hocapri's comment; neither could Paul McCartney, but it didnt stop him either.. you dont have to read sheet music if you have natural talent coming out of every pore in your skin :) this is still such a great tune, I defy anyone not to play steering wheel drums to it while driving!! ;)

  • That was an awsome song. The guitar parts were cool, the keyboarding was fantastic, the drumming and singing at the same time looked extremely difficult.

Awsome song and an awsome performance!

    5 stars; My Favorites

  • geniale!merci

  • boy, that's a rocking tune...

  • this song is much more than awesome! what a beat! Genesis rocks

  • Nice work on the keyboards as well.

  • Great BEAT!!!!!

  • Is there anything Phil Collins cant do? :)

  • vote labour!

  • not get divorced

  • You seem to have put a t at the end of can!! I'm sure you meant to ask what all music lovers ask!!

  • He can't read standard sheet music, really. Look at Wikipedia. He uses his own "language" when writing.

  • who?

  • brilliant drummer

  • Hei Frank have you a happy weekend! Ciao

  • makes the hairs on back of my neck stand up ! a real band , only a few of them about these days

  • great geat song

  • Great band...Great song...Great album...Is that enough???? Classic!!!!

  • Briliant !!

  • "Not bad for a lefty!!!!"

    He's the greatiest LEFTY...

  • Not bad for a lefty!!!!

  • phil a great drummer

  • Yeah playing drums and singing can be difficult, very cool. I love seeing drummers sing too... I think Eric Carr had it down to a science though.

  • Tell me this doesn't kick ass

  • this is a great song from genesis - one of thier best

  • grande phil

  • I miss this type of music. Good stuff!

  • This seem to be a very closed-minded point of view to music. Who will know what kind of music they would after "The Lamb" with Gabriel still in the band. Nobody knows. At least most of the music came from the band, not from Gabriel himself.

This seems to be more like a cult of personality in this case. Sometimes things are just different.
