MOTHERFUCKIN GREAT ASS SONG U.S.A!!! U.S.A!!! U.S.A!!!! UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this song, it gets my brain thinking for some reason. But what was genesis's point behind the song exactly, I'm just curious what they were thinking when they wrote this.
I thought I had replied to your post Zaxxon, but seems not.
I can't understand how a band dedicated to write transcendental music, with clear compositional skills and valuable lyrics ended doing ABAB structure POP with IMO little artistic value.
But, it's their problem, they reached fame and fortune, maybe that's enough for them.
Depressing that the Prog Rocker Club is so narrow minded sometimes. It's not the style of music that matters. It's the groove, melody, chord changes, hook, etc.
And that is present in the ENTIRE Genesis catalogue.
It's fun to listen how "Close Minded· we suposedly are, we listen the music that the rest of the world hates or simply ignores, that the magazines and sold DJ's consider "self indulgent and pompous" we love it, we care for structures and transcendence, if that's being close minded, I'm a proud one.
NMaybe the groove is enough for you, not for us, we want something more that top 40 designed for teem agers to buy albums by thiousands, we want something that will last much longer.
But we are not nerds listening Prog 24/7 while playing Dungeons & Dragons as the sold media tries to make believe.
In my case I like different genres, love Classic Rock, some good POP like Buckuingham & Nicks Fleetwood Mac or Cranberries, but if I want to listen POP I buy a POP album from a Pop band.
I buy Genesis to listen Fountain of Salmacis, Can utility and the Coastliners, etc, not to listen an album where this guys play simple stuff to make money exclusively.
I was a music education major in college. Took 4 years of theory, sang Brahms, Mozart, Schubert...played contemporary jazz pieces that make early Genesis about as progressive as ABBA.
I could have become a music snob and taken pride in dissing "Pop" or I could be what I always have been-a fan of melodic, hooky music. If everyone could write "Hey Jude" they would. 'Simple to play' does not equal 'Simple to write.'
Music is an expression of the soul. Not a shield to mask identity issues.
Contemporary Jazz makes sound Genesis as progressive as ABBA?
Seems you don't know too much of Prog, Progressive Rock is a totally different genre than Jazz, so nothing could make sound Genesis less Progresive, it's like saying a Classical artist will make Louis Armstrong sound less Jazz, and that's absurd.
I also took Music in the University and have nothing against GOOD POP, I believe Collins Genesis is mediocre Pop compared lets say with Cranberries.
Anyway, my point about performing music that would make early Genesis sound not very progressive is counter to your remark...and I quote "NMaybe the groove is enough for you, not for us, we want something more that top 40 designed for teem agers to buy albums by thiousands, we want something that will last much longer."
My counter to this is that there is much more obscure, varied and complicated music than Prog Rock-in many genres.
The main issue of Prog is transcendence, to pass the test of time, it's obscure because most people rather hear Britney, Gangsta Rap or bland POP.
You have mentioned that Gabriel left Genesis 33 years ago, but still is remembered, Steve Hackett is among the most respected musicians, King Crimson still tour, Waters also, while Collins is semi retired because his glory is something from the past.
You're the one who equated Prog Rock to more difficult or complex music. You slammed Pop as having simple beats and being music made for teenagers.
And again...I'm telling YOU that if you want to pride yourself in listening to music with "structures and transcendence" you need to ditch the Prog Rock and start listening to Contemporary Jazz and Modern Legit or Classical Music.
But as for me I'll take the Phil Collins Genesis over Gabriel any day.
Have you read my posts? I haven't slammed pop, I have slammed Collins Genesis POP.
I talked about structures, there are structures everywhere, complexity alone means nothing, you need a good melody also.
I honestly don't like most Jazz, except maybe Miles Davis, Jean Luc Ponty and Return to Forever, because they blend virtuosism with intelligent melodies.
I could talk about Classical all day, specially the Russian late XIX Century Nationalist movementt which is my favorite.
And even when I love some Classical authors, Progressive Rock has captured me because I like Rock, people writing meaningful Rock, not silly melodies with an A-B-A-B structure.
You are entitled to like Phil Collins more than Gabriel, millions do, but you can't call those who believe Rock is more than music to dance close minded.
About ABBA your metaphor about them sounded as despise.
I love Genesis except post W&W era, maybe the musician in me.
And that's the crux of this entire boring discussion. I don't care what you THINK you know about music or what you so desperately wish to project, you are a small minded fool who should be pitied.
rock on razrg3 i was at that show too. It was awesome, i was a little pissed thta umphreys didnt do their normal style with two sets and then an encore, but they were time limited and were headlining equally with sts9 so what can ya do
This song was so intense live. I was like, "Wow Genesis kicks enough ass that the U.S. military can take a vacation." Genesis is truly the greatest progressive rock band ever.
Knock it OFF! I could give a Damn about peter Gabrel... I came here to relax and to forget about my shitty week at the dentist and I am getting sick of the fighting... Geniseis is still great no matter who is at the helm... If he does not like Peter THAT IS HIS CHOICE... Some of you are bad as the Bee Gees Freaks...
No - the name of the song was derived from the original structure of the song, labeled by sections. They subsequently altered the song but kept the name anyway.
Could somebody please explain to me what this song is about?! I know the lyrics, but after over a decade of hearing it I still can't figure out the meaning! The word "abacab" isn't even in the dictionary!
I didn't claim it to be untrue, please read again. I said it was only a question of taste. Also, Genesis' popularity is regional. Around here, Genesis prog era was much more popular.
On a singing technical point, Peter Gabriel is much better than Peter Gabrier. Peter himself stated that. Of course, Peter is an excellent composer, but he did compose a lot in their prog era.
I seen the ABACAB tour at the Rosemont Horizon (just west of Chicago). I sat in an upper balcony and they were so loud my ears rang for 2 days. They were excellent and learned that Phil Collins is talented to the extreme.
re hocapri's comment; neither could Paul McCartney, but it didnt stop him either.. you dont have to read sheet music if you have natural talent coming out of every pore in your skin :) this is still such a great tune, I defy anyone not to play steering wheel drums to it while driving!! ;)
That was an awsome song. The guitar parts were cool, the keyboarding was fantastic, the drumming and singing at the same time looked extremely difficult.
This seem to be a very closed-minded point of view to music. Who will know what kind of music they would after "The Lamb" with Gabriel still in the band. Nobody knows. At least most of the music came from the band, not from Gabriel himself.
This seems to be more like a cult of personality in this case. Sometimes things are just different.

ivanprog1 3 years ago
No identity issues, I'm good at what I do and I know it, so your comment is out of place,
BTW: ABBA (who seems you despise) had excellent and imaginative POP in their days unlike Collins Genesis which is boring, dull and repetitive.
Also mentiioned Buckingham & Nicks Fleetwood Mac and Cranberries, not precisely Prog but great bands.
But I don't have to like everything, I dislike Collins Genesis and I believe that in a free society I have the liberty to say it.
ivanprog1 3 years ago
When did I say I despise ABBA? I think they were great. Just not very "Prog Rock"
joelmc73 3 years ago
You took "Music" in the University? Hmm.
Anyway, my point about performing music that would make early Genesis sound not very progressive is counter to your remark...and I quote "NMaybe the groove is enough for you, not for us, we want something more that top 40 designed for teem agers to buy albums by thiousands, we want something that will last much longer."
My counter to this is that there is much more obscure, varied and complicated music than Prog Rock-in many genres.
joelmc73 3 years ago
Not only in the university, studied piano for five years, played drums in an amateur band for some years, my Prog reviews can be found in many sites.
Again you prove your knowledge about Prog is very limited.
Obscurity has nothing to do with Prog, Pink Floyd has two of the top ten albums ever, Yes and ELP were massive in the 70's, but still Prog.
There are simpler bands as Yes, or you can go to search Henry Cow and is far more complex than almost anything I heard.

joelmc73 3 years ago
If I'm such a fool, why you keep asking me?
Who is the real idiot? The one who has to be pitied or the stupid who asks this person why he said something?
You have called me close minded, a person who deserves pity, etc. So you care for what I think even when you say the contrary.
But when you run out of arguments and are proved you don't even read the posts, you start insulting and kick the chess board as an infant.
Thought you were an intelligent person, what a waste of my time.

And at the end as the cherry in the pie you say "End of discussion for me"
You started it, you followed it, you boasted you sung Brahs, Mozart, etc (If ever), then you act as a spoiled kid, insult and run away.
I won't say it was boring, it was quite funny specially when your lack of arguments was evident.
But I won't insult you, listen Sussudio until the end of times and have a nice life.

Yeah playing drums and singing can be difficult, very cool. I love seeing drummers sing too... I think Eric Carr had it down to a science though.

gabriel's rock

This seem to be a very closed-minded point of view to music. Who will know what kind of music they would after "The Lamb" with Gabriel still in the band. Nobody knows. At least most of the music came from the band, not from Gabriel himself.
This seems to be more like a cult of personality in this case. Sometimes things are just different.
