Yes, back then, the world actually WAS silent. So he invented the theremin as a physical exercise machine. He was very surprised when in 1928, sound was invented and he noticed that his machine actually made these new "sounds".

Leon Theremin is an unparalleled genius in every sense. Even to this day, it is astounding to see and hear this instrument.
