the best way to do this is do it with the ipod ON!, just hold the power button and the home key together until the screen turns black, release the power button and keep the finger on the home key for about 10 seconds.

if jailbreak using redsnow, do this when it ask you to make sure the ipod is connected and switched off, it will by pass that screen once it;s in DFU mode

if you still getting the same error code 6 by doing this method, just deactivate your firewall and antivirus and try again.It work for me:) It even activate the dfu mode automatically and restore/update on the first try!!!

THANKS!! I have extremelly bad luck always and as always it all got fucked up, iPod went into recovery mode when I was trying to install 4.2, iTunes won't recognize it. So this I hope is going to work. It's restoring to 4.2 now, it's at the same step, Preparing iPod for restore as it was before when it showed up that 1602 I think error. So thanks, if it works. <3
