@JSprayaEntertainment this is actually for low budget fillmaking and student. For a harry potter movie, you get the RED ONE for like 40k or a cine camera for 100k or more
@bouchandre oh , nice , but im saying you only would say , something is " Only 5000 bucks ", if your rich or have a huge budget , Anyway i Think the Transformers 3 ( hd 3d Cam ) is the best money can buy right now

Camera is awesome!!I got it for my 17. and 18. birthday..Mybe asking your self why did i get this as a gift on two of my birthdays..Well,the answer is..it costed 12.000 bucks...But camera still rocks..!
Why do camcorders cost so much???? I saw a sony camcorder that list for $94,999???? Why do these cameras cost so much? They aren't made of gold you know.
@KawaRider88 Broadcast quality lenses alone cost upwards of $100,000 :) they probably cost less than 10,000 to make, if your really proffesional, money doesn't matter so everything is expensive
I rented stuff from those guys... Jessie and Scott... great service. no bs. very helpful... large verity of equipment. I actually was looking for a vid on how to use EX 1, no wonder they got most views... keep up the good work
I shoot with this cam, and I'm a huge fan of all the things you mentioned.
One thing to keep in mind, this cam tends to shoot a little hotter than the OSD implies. I've gotten home to find some shots that looked great in cam are just a bit too blown out to avoid some post work.
I've done my best to learn the sweet spots, (just as with any cam, you gotta use it, to use it well.) I usually try to iris to just under the brightness that I *think* I will need. Then voila! DETAIL!
don't be fooled by a single characteristic, like color space. comparisons in image favor the ex1, in ergonomics favor the 170, and in pure math favor the xf300.
and i sell all three, so let me know your preference and let's hook you up!
@jessemillerman Thanks for the information. I suppose you could always work around the color space witht he EX1R buy using a nanoflash to capture 4:2:2 at 100MB/S+. the entire rig would run under $10k and is a serious option but what's your take on the upcoming AF100? What you're opinion regardig the AVCHD coden they're using ocmpared to Mpeg-2? someone recently said that 24Mb/s AVCHD was equivalant to 45Mb/s Mpeg-2...?
AVCHD is not up to speed yet, particularly because the only cameras recording in that codec have tiny little chips. the giant 1/2" cmos chips on the EX cameras allow for great low-light performance and also shallower depth of field than the smaller chip cameras. nanoflash is a perfect solution. send me an email and i'll prepare a proposal for you. jesse is the email name, and midtownvideo is the domain. its a com
Your recording time of 140 minutes is inaccurate. All of the Sony EX series of cameras offer the ability to hot swap cards, so theoretically you have no limit to your record time rather space on your hard drive as long as you can dump your cards. Also, to get 140 minutes off of two 16 gig cards requires setting the camera to SP and downsizing resolution to 1440x1080 (at best) rather then full 1080. I love this camera and use it everyday, but if your going to advertise rentals - get facts right
jeez! i love this camera. i love the professional look, it wouldn't be so awkward when interviewing people compared to my dinky hd cam. any ideas of a cam under $1000 with the same look?
@ImHomeAtLast i guess a SONY HD1000E is what you'r looking for if you just want a nice HD cam to have a more proffesional look. should be good enough for just interviewing but for it's really just a consumer camera in a prosumer camera body.
I don't really like it, but if you want to get rid of the awkwardness of a small consumer HD cam, this might be the solution.
I injested some EX3 footage into fcp 6 and now I'm having trouble getting my project out to Youtube. Any ideas? I"m doing the H.264, quicktime conversion. Appreciate any help...
So, im still thinking about a camera. Sony EX1 or the new coming Scarlet 2/3" cinema. I dont know which will be cheaper. This I need to buy a 35mm Letus adapter. $5K.
What about this lens. Can I remove it an add my own? And how would it go with the letus? I heard that is a fixed lens, true? I dont understand that.
So, what would I need to buy? Camera, letus, and what lens to that? any?
Just for simple shooting at first. I m asking if I need any special lens or anything with the letus adapter.
I just finished filming a short film with this camera, and I have to say I recommend this to anyone. It was fairly easy to learn and handle. Had no problem with it on dolly's or jibs, and I loved shooting slow-motion scenes with it.
Once in lifetime investment for a camcorder and you will never need to buy every few years a new camcorder.
I have a 8 years old DV camcorder, Sony TRV420E. During that time it was 2500 gulden, but gulden was twice cheaper as euro so it would be 5000 euros. I dont think there is much difference with the latest 600 dollars camcorders.
A pretty incomplete review, considering there wasn't even a mention of the number one problem with this camera, the rolling shutter distortion it causes.
HI it is very dificult to get this cam in Spain mate you thing is worthy ti buy it in the UK ???, Are you from there? Congrats for your company it looks very competent
hey, I wanna get a camera, preferably with a shoulder mount. I am looking to shoot some videos in HD outdoors and also indoor. And also with the same camera indoors in very low lighting.
I need something that is professional movie quality. As close as possible around the $2500CAD price range.
Can you recommend something?
this is not for any professional business. I just want a GOOD HD cam, to make movies, trailers, and later on inside, theatre stage performances.
Hi. Actually, the Sony HDR-FX1 is an excellent unit. It looks similar to this PMW-EX1 but uses mini dv tapes. It has the extra upper handle....most of the same manual controls (focus, zoom, iris, etc) 3ccd chips...and it shoots in full HD. I just saw one on ebay earlier tonight in the price range you mentioned. I have used an HDR-FX1 before, and it handles wonderfully. I mostly do weddings and small commercial work.
Do they have any high definition audio in these HD Cameras. Because if your gonna have HD Video your gonna need HD AUDIO. IF THEY DO , DO THEY HAVE LIKE DOLBY TRUE HD 5.1 CHANNEL SURROUND SOUND, OR LPCM 7.1 CHANNEL SURROUND SOUND?
im really into making short films and want to get a camra like this to shoot them on but im not too good at techy things and im afraid that i wont be able to use it, how easy would you say it is to use?
Also how much would a camara like this cost? and if it is a bit tricky, could you recommend any smaller, easier camaras which still qive the same good quality?
The reason Sony cameras are overpriced is because they hold all the tiny functions and many of the pointless ones you find yourself never using. That's really why I switched to Canon. This looks like a great camera, but Sony is forgetting the people who are looking at these Cameras don't want to spend 10 grand lol
you are wrong though. the PMW-EX1 (and EX3) both record in native progressive 1080 24p.
luckily, because the live HD-SDI output automatically applies a pull-down, the signal is compatible with switchers including the panasonic AVHS line that only accept 1080 signals in 59.94i
if you are shooting a stage performance, i would skip the "hd" requirement and look for something that performs well in low light situations. many of the smaller hd cameras DO NOT.
the Z7U is a great HD camera for Low light, and the Z5U is a lower cost version that would also work
Great video. Does
This easily export To iMovie or
fCP?

hey, I wanna get a camera, preferably with a shoulder mount. I am looking to shoot some videos in HD outdoors and also indoor. And also with the same camera indoors in very low lighting.
I need something that is professional movie quality. As close as possible around the $2500CAD price range.
Can you recommend something?
this is not for any professional business. I just want a GOOD HD cam, to make movies, trailers, and later on inside, theatre stage performances.
recommend anything?

hello. unfortunately, you won't find anything good in low light for that budget.
of course, you may find the quality acceptable with whatever you end up with.
best of luck.

Is the Lens changeable or no?
jomigirock 2 years ago
No, the lens is not changeable on the PMW-EX1. This is only possible with the PMW-EX3.

It is the Holy Grail however, for now.
Interesting also is how Sony is killing their own market, coming out with new cameras which approach the high $ ones, for half the price.
Good for consumers anyway. Maybe they'll seriously dent Canon's lead soon in the general industry.

Hey
i have 3 main questions:
im really into making short films and want to get a camra like this to shoot them on but im not too good at techy things and im afraid that i wont be able to use it, how easy would you say it is to use?
Also how much would a camara like this cost? and if it is a bit tricky, could you recommend any smaller, easier camaras which still qive the same good quality?
Thanks alot.

The reason Sony cameras are overpriced is because they hold all the tiny functions and many of the pointless ones you find yourself never using. That's really why I switched to Canon. This looks like a great camera, but Sony is forgetting the people who are looking at these Cameras don't want to spend 10 grand lol

does the pmw-ex1 do shot in full HD (1080 p) 24p
tolstoymex 2 years ago
yes
jessemillerman 2 years ago
No it doesn't. It will shoot 720 24p, but at 1080p it won't. It will shoot 30p though at 1080.

thanks for writing Nick.
you are wrong though. the PMW-EX1 (and EX3) both record in native progressive 1080 24p.
luckily, because the live HD-SDI output automatically applies a pull-down, the signal is compatible with switchers including the panasonic AVHS line that only accept 1080 signals in 59.94i

if you are shooting a stage performance, i would skip the "hd" requirement and look for something that performs well in low light situations. many of the smaller hd cameras DO NOT.
the Z7U is a great HD camera for Low light, and the Z5U is a lower cost version that would also work

hello. yes, it absolutely is worth paying more, if your profession requires high quality video. think of it as a capital investment
there is a major difference between the consumer cameras you can find anywhere and professional broadcast cameras.
