When this was shown at the end of a prime-time program or an "ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT" (rare, even then), a live staff announcer would add, "This is ABC".
Oh and btw, I have the animated version of this ident on one of my VHS tapes. And it looks more red and yellow than brown and orange to me. I might be wrong, but I see no brown or orange; I could possibly be color blind, but I don't see brown or orange.
I figured you had visited that "Evolution of ABC" page. The 1997 date they have for this did not mean it was from the fall of that year, as their yellow look began at that time. Interestingly enough, most of the video stills on the Evolution pages I think came from Tom Buckley aka eyeontv.
I've always known about that Evolution page. I've known about it since November 30, 2002. And I wouldn't have known about this 1996 ID, cause I was only, like, 9 at the time; too young to have paid any focus to that type of stuff. And you were like, what, 95?
You know what? This actually does makes some sense, cause the Fox network did the same thing at the same time; they put their web address in their promos, which at the time was FoxWorld.
And u know what's funny? I actually have a picture of the ABC 1997-98 bumper taped on my wall and did't even know it!!!
I remember FoxWorld, and the HUGE media blitz ABC put out the season they went yellow. Yellow posters, book covers, full-length magazine ads, YELLOW billboards..you would have thought The Simpsons were moving to ABC! Looking back, I believe they tore a page out of CBS' Get Ready '89 tactics!

Other variants of this image campaign used brown and orange. This particular screenshot uses a red/orange and yellow.

This is from 1996? No way! I thought this was from 97, as some websites claimed. Got anymore examples?

I don't have anything else from that timeframe at the moment.
