  • Clapton also did this on his Slowhand album. Too bad Martyn had to go so soon.

  • Brilliant tribute and excellent playing by all - but particular praise to the indomitable Jerry Douglas.

  • This was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful singer & musician.

  • Thank you Tom!

  • Hey John, great to see you performing with Kathy.

    Saskia

  • Well intentioned but best stick with the original and pretend this hadn't happened!

  • I had the extrordinary pleasure of seeing John lvfe about 15 times and meeting him twice - he was a very complex man and let his music do the talking for him. He would have laughed at the sentimentality surrounding his death and had a wry smile at this.

Amazing man and a nice tribute. But watch him doing this one on his own on the OGWT - his presence was MORE than all the people in this vid combined.

  • Kathy takes it to church.

The big man would have loved it.

  • Did the Big Yin proud there Kathy, Gerry, & co! Sure he would approve!

Now stop yer greetin' ya big jessies! ( He may have said!)

  • nice tribute..

  • sorry but you could have another 200 people on stage playing this song, and it wouldn't be any better than John on his own...although the version from Transatlantic is marvellous too..

  • There should be a possibility to click a 6....10 star rating. You would and should deserve the 10 star one. Wonderful music, great artists, Kathy youre fantastic. There's only one person missing in this perfect crew: The Big One. No better music ever can be composed or performed

  • If you've seen the clip with Kathy and John from Transatlantic Sessions for this song, you can see the enjoyment they both got from singing together. A nice tribute from Kathy to John. (and a great song too!)

  • Excellent !

    R.I.P John Martyn.

  • Oh yeah 5* respect.

  • Nice tribute to the finest contemporary musician to come out of the British Isles, in my view.

  • I did'nt know John was'nt with us

    any more, R.I.P

  • BEAUTIFUL!

    thank you.

  • This is wonderful.

  • I've just come across this video. Thanks for posting it tomtscotland and many thanks for adding the clips of John from the Transatlantic Sessions. In fact, since John died I've written into my will that I want the John and Kathy clip played at my funeral. It really is my favourite version of this John Martyn song. A true hero of mine.

  • John died the same day this was filmed. They must have come up with the arrangement extremely quickly! You would never have thought that, it is perfect. Just perfect.

  • Great stuff. Missed the festival this year. Missing John Martyn. Thanks for posting.

  • Yes, that is Tim O'brien. So sad to learn of Johns' death.

  • Who's that on mando? Tim O'Brien? Can't really get a good enough look to tell.

Excellent song, great bunch of musicians!

  • wow,,,,awesome. wish they'd show this in uk on bbc.

That's Eddi reader behind Kathy isn't it?

  • Yes that's Eddi.

Show was shown on BBC Scotland.

Quite a few clips from this and other Celtic Connections shows can be seen online - try googling "bbc scotland celtic connections"

  • @tomtscotland - i am in the USA and I went to the website and it said the videos are "not available in your area". :-(. I love your postings and subscribe to your channel.

  • Absolutely beautiful video, I'm only sorry that I can't give you 6 stars. The snippets of John are wonderful, thank you so very much for this.

  • John's reaction at the end of the original video is one of my favorite moments in all of the Transatlantic Sessions. RIP John!

  • Thanks so much for this, tomt - can't believe I missed it. Timeline inserts I'm ok with, but wouldn't have a clue how to do the little video in video thing.

  • Great tune! Would you believe this is the first time I (a professional singer) have heard it? Wow! Wake-up call! I'm downloading more of John Martyn's music as I type this.

Wonderful sentiment behind the song's performance this time. A fitting tribute that his friends would perform one of John's tunes in his honor upon his passing.

Incidentally, that's my dear friend Todd on bass. I know he's thrilled to have been a part of this and I couldn't possibly be more proud of him!

  • Bravi Bravi Bravi!!!!

  • Thank you. Just beautiful! May John rest in peace.

    x

  • Thanks so much...I was there that night and It's great to hear it again

  • I've added snippets from the legendary first Transatlantic Sessions series of John Martyn performing same song with Kathy.

  • @tomtscotland Hi Tom, can you point me in the right direction to that song please? Cheers

  • @stevedunn1973

Kathy Mattea did a duet with John Martyn on the Original Transatlantic Sessions ( DVD is available) - see video response to this video on this page.

    Tom

  • Wonderful post/Video! 5+Star's!

Very best of wishes, my friend!
