I have understood this since I saw the remake (don't waste your time watching it). So main character was taken to mental institution because she had cut her wrists after her mother's death. Su-mi is watching her sister's hands, but probably Su-mi herself is the one who tried to cut her veins.
You should watch original japanese movies: Ringu and Ju-On. I had seen it BEFORE remakes and I regret for many people who spoiled their fun starting from remakes. Japanese Ringu is very scary, if You watch it before remake, You couldn't sleep with a light turned off (like me). And japanese Ju-On is much more intelligent, mysterious and interesting than that hollywood piece of s**t. American The Grudge was a senseless conglomerat of Ju-On: The Grudge and Ju-On: The Curse.
BTW, what is that thing with their hands (when she wants to see her little sisters hands)?? I never understood that...

I have this movie too... it's freakin' scary! Much scarier than hollywood stuff like "the ring" or "the grudge"
