I served aboard the USS Iowa, BB61, for 3 years and 7 months in the 6th Division during the Korean War from January 1952 - August 1955. I was a first loader on a quad 40 millimeter anti-aircraft . As in the video above when they fired the 16 inch guns our gun mount was secured and we had to go to the starboard side of the ship.In the video you see above the Iowa was firing the a nine-gun salvo to the starboard side. Uss Iowa veterans will gather in Charleston, SC for our annual reunion.
Love the Navy. We (as far as i know) have the best carriers due to the aircraft and the best aviators in the world. No fighter pilot from any other country (or USAF) could take a naval aviator down. They are the best!

But the truth is a matchup between both of them in a simulation or otherwise would be putting a German Shepard up against a French Poodle...it would be extremely lopsided. The Royal Navy more than often rely on US Carrier Battle Group support for aircraft as they only have around 3 smaller models. However I will say they are one of the best in the world.

@Ctasker5 Have you ever heard of ROTC? They will pay for your college if you agree to become an officer. Sometimes they even give you a monthly income. Check into online. I am not sure what courses you need to take but just talk to the ROTC director at a college. They have numbers you can call for questions and you can also email them. But if your only in middle school, just try to do your best in school. You can decide later on what you want to do.

Tomcats were taken out of service due to the cost of maintenance per flight hour because of the age of the airframe and lack of parts. The Tomcat was a pure air superiority fighter while the Hornet serves dual roles. As a fighter the Tomcat was and still is superior to the Hornet.
@vf74tomcat Good comment. Give facts and no name calling. The Hornet has poor range. Aircraft need to have a fuel fraction of .30 to .35. The Hornet has only a .23. The Super Hornet had to be built to address this, but also due to things you mentioned. BTW, the only Iraqi air to air kill in the first Gulf War was a Hornet that was splashed by a MiG-25. The F-14 is missed. Perhaps the USAF should buy planes for the USN? They are much better at it. But, USN pilot training is as good as it gets.
@deutschschoen - During my service the Air Force utilized Navy fighters, the F4 Phantom jet. Using the SAME AIRCRAFT, the Navy kill ratio vs N.Vietnam was about 5 to 1 ... the Air Forces was 1.1 to one. The reason why countries buy Navy developed aircraft for their land forces is that they are much sturdier. They have to be. Ask the Army and Marines who provide better close air support. The Navy wins hands down. Great pilots. Anchors Aweigh!!

Red Flag brought the USAF dog fighting skills back in balance with the USN. Anyway, that was Vietnam, but for decades since then the USAF has clearly had better fighters than the Navy. Not better pilots, no way, but better fighters, absolutely. BTW, the Marines would choose brother Marines for CAS.

Not only were the Humphrey designed frigates better than any frigate the British had, their crews were better then the Royal Navy's. Even Nelson predicted the 44s would give the Brits trouble and after the losses, the Admiralty ordered all frigates to avoid single ship action against the big frigates. Your Navy is not invincible, Japan proved that as well as the Germans did.

@TheOverlord80 I understand the Royal Navy maintain a small but resourceful navy which is respected around the world and by their US allies. But the truth is a matchup between both of them in a simulation or otherwise would be putting a German Shepard up against a French Poodle...it would be extremely lopsided. The Royal Navy more than often rely on US Carrier Battle Group support for aircraft as they only have around 3 smaller models. However I will say they are one of the best in the world.

@Ctasker5 Have you ever heard of ROTC? They will pay for your college if you agree to become an officer. Sometimes they even give you a monthly income. Check into online. I am not sure what courses you need to take but just talk to the ROTC director at a college. They have numbers you can call for questions and you can also email them. But if your only in middle school, just try to do your best in school. You can decide later on what you want to do.

@zeek997733 The Hornet is not faster than the Tomcat, doesn't have the range the Tomcat had and costs more than the Tomcat did. Tomcats were taken out of service due to the cost of maintenance per flight hour because of the age of the airframe and lack of parts. The Tomcat was a pure air superiority fighter while the Hornet serves dual roles. As a fighter the Tomcat was and still is superior to the Hornet.

@vf74tomcat Good comment. Give facts and no name calling. The Hornet has poor range. Aircraft need to have a fuel fraction of .30 to .35. The Hornet has only a .23. The Super Hornet had to be built to address this, but also due to things you mentioned. BTW, the only Iraqi air to air kill in the first Gulf War was a Hornet that was splashed by a MiG-25. The F-14 is missed. Perhaps the USAF should buy planes for the USN? They are much better at it. But, USN pilot training is as good as it gets.

@deutschschoen - During my service the Air Force utilized Navy fighters, the F4 Phantom jet. Using the SAME AIRCRAFT, the Navy kill ratio vs N.Vietnam was about 5 to 1 ... the Air Forces was 1.1 to one. The reason why countries buy Navy developed aircraft for their land forces is that they are much sturdier. They have to be. Ask the Army and Marines who provide better close air support. The Navy wins hands down. Great pilots. Anchors Aweigh!!

@13proudfox13 The Navy kill ratio was better because the USN sent their pilots to their "Top Gun" school. Prior to that the kill ratio was nearly the same. Red Flag brought the USAF dog fighting skills back in balance with the USN. Anyway, that was Vietnam, but for decades since then the USAF has clearly had better fighters than the Navy. Not better pilots, no way, but better fighters, absolutely. BTW, the Marines would choose brother Marines for CAS.

Now China is working on different types of cruisers. There are some projects.
First - air-defence ship with HQ-9 SAM, about 15 000 tonns.
Another - heavy battlecruiser, 35 000 tonns, planty of Club ASM and some about 96 SA-N-12 for self-defence.
But may be they will use 256 SA-N-9 for this purpose. also it will heave possibly 2x2 heavy 305 mm guns.

Yes because we stole ideas for the airplane ,internet ,and the personal computer from the british.Virtually all the significant technology received by the u.s from other nations came from germany at the end of ww2.The only significant technology the u.s received from britain was radar,and the compounds used to build a more reliable jet engine.Britain has received far more technology from the u.s in the past 65 years than the other way around,both military and civilian.

yes, you actually did, the first powered flight would have been about 3 years before the wright brothers, in Britain, but due to an unfortunate accident in a glider, this didn't happen, but, the wright brothers did visit this Britsh engineer and loooked at his plans. Royal Marines are no better than US Marine recon.Also the RN is the 2nd bigest Navy in Nato after the USA not the world.

us marine force recon mite be better than royal marines but there no were near as good as royal marine moutain leaders people sey thay have the hardest training in world even harder than all specail forces and there not specail forces to be a moutain leader it takes nealy double the time of navy seals and alot harder so of the training thay get dumbed in the artic and have to able survive on there own for 2 mouths no help wot so ever

Why would China put missiles on Rapa nui? NATO is more than capable of dealing with any Chinese aggression. What goes around comes around? Meaning? And htful owners. Explain what a htful owner is. Biggest navy 100 years before columbus. Is there ANY relevance in that statement? I don't think so. Chinese = quantity over quality.
