Thanks for posting this! I finally found the name of that gameshow with a pinball machine I loved as a kid. Even back then it was so incredibly geeky then that they barely mentioned it here after Hollywood Squares. It's called the 'Magnificent Marble Machine'. wow! thx!
This advertisement from 1975 consisted of quality game shows on the NBC Television Network. "High Rollers" and "Wheel Of Fortune" were two of the recently added game shows in the Winter of 1975. Quality programming was a rule -- not an exception -- on weekday mornings in 1975. A Factual 5!! I would not mind the return of "High Rollers" on television.
Here's an idea. All four major networks and their affiliates should between 10am and 2pm monday thru friday is dedicate three hours or more of programming to game shows. Keep your local news at 11 or Noon, but move all the talk shows and court shows to the afternoon or late nights!
I miss the days when networks liks CBS and USA Network televised game shows and they were fun to watch. Hell, even the lowest-rated game shows were better than any reality show ever made.
Futher more Television Stations don't care how it's changed thoughout the years. They feel that CHANGE is the way which is NOT THE WAY ! the word ass and others are ok to say ? I really wish i knew what the plans were back then that has folks watching Sh*tty Television. At lease back then you learned a thing or two !
runnerduck ! How true that is ! ! Everything from yesturday's line/up has been taken away due to the fact that these kids don't find anything from yesturday entertaining nor understands. I tell you if things from yesturday were still around today more people would be better off instead of this Reality Television Bull/Sh*t. I don't watch it but I do enjoy watching you tube for a break of fresh air !
I watched the Magnificent Marble Machine video on that site, and it brought back great memories. It's a shame that only a few episodes of many 1970s game shows exist due to videotape recycling..
Talk about smooth-talking me into staying in bed all day armed with nothing but a remote control. With a morning of game shows like this who needs anything more? The Magic Marble Machine?? Amazing!
Those of us who were old enough to watch those daytime game shows during the "heyday" of mid 70's remember it fondly. Give me three contestants, a puzzle board, a snazzy theme, lots of flashing lights and a genial host over a court show or trash talk anytime !!
Not many of them, there are a few here in the among traders. A few episodes of Wheel are in UCLA's media files. Some of the syndiacted Squares episodes from the 60s/70s were found a few years ago and have been shown on GSN.
Sadly, not many - most 70s game shows were lost due to tape recycling (videotape was very expensive at that time, and networks did that to cut costs)..
Anyway, these shows are on at times when children could be watching.
Speaking of Maury, last week he did a show where he had on a woman who tested 17 different men, and none of them proved to be her child's father; not even her own husband. He's even had two other women on their who tested at least 12 different men; they each have four kids, and they only found the fathers of one of them.
Secondly, they oughta just simply put a boxing ring right up there on the stage for Jerry Springer.
Here's WPHL TV, Channel 17 in Philadelphia's daytime lineup. 7:00 am Montel Williams 8:00 am Cheaters 9:00 am Jerry Springer 10:00 am Maury 11:00 am Jerry Springer 12 noon Maury 1:00 pm Jerry Springer 2:00 pm Montel Williams 3:00 pm Greg Behrendt 4:00 pm Maury Up until they were they went off the air, Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones were also on in this same time period. I believe Jenny Jones was on at 7 am, and Ricki Lake was on at 8.
Can you say Ghetto-fabulous TV? Montel, however, will be the lone exeption. NBC bringin back Deal or No Deal is a start (they show it on WMAQ in Chicago). They should also retain Merv Griffin's Crosswords too (I fell in love with that show).
This was from the year that Wheel of Fortune debuted, and the year that Vanna White graduated from high school.
They just don't make game shows like this anymore. We're stuck today with trashy talk shows like Jerry Springer and Maury Povich; (the fights, the paternity tests, the cheating shows, the lie detector tests, etc.)
That's a shame.....and with all those sleazy ghetto-fabulous talk shows, you can change the theme to CRAP IN THE MORNING!!!! Note to NBC......BRING SOME HALF-HOUR GAME SHOWS BACK TO THE MORNING SO IT WILL BE FUN AGAIN!!!!
Unfortunately, that will never happen because NBC is now programming only two hours of daytime programs (not counting the three-hours of "Today". That leaves only "Days of Our Lives" and "Passions", the latter being dropped Sept.07 for a fourth hour of Today. The rest of the schedule is left to local affiliates.
That's because netwoks (and affiliate stations) realized game shows and soap operas were expensive to produce, reurns of sitcoms started becoming expensive due to "higher residuals", and talk shows were cheap to produce which made TV stations happy. Not to mention the "dumbing down" of our populace that would make many of these game shows too challanging for them..
Now I see the only outlet the game shows have left are on cable (with GSN and Discovery Channels). I want to see somethin od GSN crossed with TV-Land and Me-TV.
'75 was also the year that "Days of Our Lives" and "Another World" both expanded to one hour soaps. Jeopardy! was dropped to make room for the hour long "Days", and NBC made amends to Jeopardy producer Merv Griffin by slotting the new "Wheel of Fortune" in its lineup.
Trebek had previously anchored "Wizard of Odds" on NBC in 73-74 and then following "HR's" cancellation in '76 briefly hosted "Double Dare" on CBS in 76-77. He would host a 2nd round of "High Rollers" from 1978-80.
In 1975, the second rendition of Password was cancelled by ABC with the third ending up on NBC in '79 as Password Plus. Match Game was a big hit in CBS daytime in '75, and only second in ratings among gameshows to Price is Right. "Match" and "Price" beat the pants off of "AW" on NBC and the General Hospital/One Life to Live lineup on ABC.
I dreamed of Jackpot, after 2008 is dead.

@Digifan23 We'd have Pyramid back on the air instead of The Talk if Julie Chen wasn't screwing the boss.

I can't stand talk shows. What's sad about most of them is they end up bleeping out every other word and the bleeper sound gets annoying.

Great Promo! Oh, how I would've loved to see Magnificent Marble Machine, I hear it was neat, but critically lambasted, I would still like to see it.

I found a video of the Magnificent Marble Machine. It's at the Television Production Music Museum's website.

It was the Magnificent Marble Machine. In other words, larger-than-life pinball.

Or, rather, survived until about the end of this year or January of next year.

Yeah, I heard of a rumor of a major set change. Not even Bob Barker likes the idea.

I agree...but networks have become pretty "cheap" - look at the crappy reality shows that populate prime time TV..

And not many realized that Alex Trebek, who hosted "High Rollers" back then, would become the Answer Man on "Jeopardy!"
dnm728 4 years ago
The irony in that is, this promo came after the original "Jeopardy!" (with Art Fleming as host and Don Pardo as announcer) left the NBC airwaves.
