@Lewis5525 Waldner is old and yet he was able to pull the unthinkable in 2004 Olympics beating Timo Boll and Ma Lin. You can't really compare him now against Top Chinese players thats half his age. He is by far the most brilliant player in Table Tennis.
Waldner was genius player. He had great successes against the best players even after 40'ies.Let's not discuss if he can win against today's top players. Let's discuss if he had the same conditions and the same age with any other players. He would still be #1 of Table Tennis World.
This sport follows the Magnus Effect, which is the study of the movement of spheres through fluids. Jan Ove masters the Laws of Physics somehow and since very early age. He should be awarded the Nobel Prize of Physics. He is the best no doubt, others will follow.
@bizlawprofessor hehe if you think so.. i don't.. 2004 is 8 years ago and the competition is way stronger today.. timo boll is stronger in my oppion.. ma lin as well.. but whatever.. of course he was an supergood play andhe sitll is.. but in his best days he couldnt beat a ma lin, ma long, zhang jike or whang hao at
@gertnaster - Ma Lin was ranked in top 10 in 2004, top 10 today. Boll was ranked top 10 - 12ish in 2004, 4th today. You really think competition has gotten THAT much better in just a handful of years? "He he if you think so." 15 years PAST HIS BEST DAYS Waldner dominated Ma Lin at the 2004 Olympics. Can you tell me what revolution in the sport has occurred in the last few years that has suddenly made Ma Lin at 31 a MUCH better player than he was at 24, when Waldner destroyed him?
@bizlawprofessor we all know that waldner is a legend in table tennis and that he was a unique player. But gertnaster is right, i think at least the top 5 players today would win against waldner in his best times.
Just watch the huge difference btw. him and the #2 player today (zhang jike). Sry but he would dominate walnder.
@maxfratz33 Waldner has said in an interview that todays players are more "robot like" thanks to the new table/ball. In his prime there was more sense of style and finesse.
so crazy to see the difference between the old skills compared with the skills of today..i guess even in his best days waldner couldnt beat the players of the current top10.
@gertnaster Let me amend a bit: incredible and utterly ignorant rubbish. Waldner, nearing 40, destroyed both Ma Lin and Timo Boll at the 2004 Olympics and made it to the medal round. Waldner circa 1987, giving him an allowance to spend a bit of time adjusting to the new rules, form and equipment, would likely still be top five in the world today, perhaps #1.
@TheKarub1 Joo, Chen, Hao Yingchao, Gionis, Wang Xi, Jang Song Man, that new Japanese junior who beat a Chinese in the junior team finals, plus in women's there are tons of top choppers. I mean wake up and look around, there are plenty of top defenders still.
I wonder if Jan-Ove has seen these videos himself on YouTube...Thank you Murrayfield for uploading this, it is really great to watch for any table tennis fan.
@raykaracan maybe among the european players. Modern Chinese players are far too powerful and fast for him to be able to handle.

@gertnaster Utter rubbish, an old and well-past-his-prime Waldner was still relatively competitive against top 10 ITTF players into the 21st century.

I love how over 20 years ago they were talking about the defender having no future in the modern game of table tennis.
