@TheOldschool81 yeah, 22 to be exact, but whose counting? I (and millions of others) love movies and books that came out even longer ago. what's wrong with liking old games?
I'm having a hard time figuring out what buttons do what. I mean I can not for the life of me figure out where the magic button is. Do you think you could tell me where it would be at? Thanks.
@elenorgreanleef honestly I'd have to dig out the game again to see. I believe there are default keys, but the three functions are attack, jump and magic. If you have a mouse, the three mouse buttons do the three effects. Magic, if you have any blue magic bottles (as it shows at the top of the screen), you just need to press it once and it'll use what you have. In beginner mode, it won't use all your magic in one shot (like it does in the other modes). Try space bar, left control, left shift.
Nice video. I was wondering will this game work on a 286 CPU, I currently have a old zenith laptop that uses a 286 CPU or does it need a 386. Thanks for your time.
Played this port on an actual MS-DOS PC and noticed how this game actually DOES NOT produce sound effects from a SoundBlaster sound card, but rather from the PC speaker. That's why the sound is so crunchy. I was still impressed with the sound, as I would never expect the PC speaker to produce sound effects like that.
But for some reason, whenever the screen scrolls on my DOS PC, it jitters around from left to right. I don't have this problem in DOSBox, so this has left me scratching my head.
@XSC3 - It's a more advanced computer than that: a Pentium II. FYI, this computer is actually running Windows 95, but I'm only using it for playing MS-DOS games(Golden Axe doesn't work in a Windows DOS box, so I need to use real DOS to play). I think I'm gonna underclock the CPU(it's 266MHz). Either that, or try and get an old Packard Bell Legend 316SX(runs on an AMD 386 at 25MHz) to work again(the hard drive crashed and I can't boot DOS even though I can install it - WTF?)
@XSC3 - Meh... I'm not a fan of emulation as there's always bound to be something wrong in the sound(v0.73 of DOSBox is the one I found has the most accurate FM Synthesis), so I'd rather use the original hardware wherever possible. I did get Golden Axe to work under Windows XP using DOSBox, but an emulator just doesn't cut it for me. Give me an MS-DOS or Windows 95 with a SoundBlaster Pro or any SoundBlaster clone with a real Yamaha YMF262 FM Synthesis chip. I'll take that any day over DOSBox
@Ace9921 I guess it depends on how "pure" you want it, since this is obviously just an imperfect port of the arcade version, so the original PCB would be the way to go. ;) A 386 with DOS is the purest way to play this. I didn't have any problems though, and as you know youtube video isn't always a 100% accurate representation of the thing itself.
@XSC3 - Not for all games. Golden Axe is one such game; it will only work with FM Synthesis through a YM3812 or YMF262 to produce the music and uses the PC speaker to produce the sound effects. I only use DOSBox to play games with Microsoft's Roland Sound Canvas-based wavetable as a soundfont for games supporting General MIDI.
What I'd need now is an Ensoniq AudioPCI or SoundScape sound card. They've got some killer wavetables and the AudioPCI has some very nice General MIDI wavesets.
@Ace9921 Make a FAT16 partition on your hard drive, put your DOS games there, make an MS-DOS startup disk, tinker in BIOS to boot from floppy, get an old PCI soundcard, + some drivers, tinker Autoexec.bat and Config.sys on floppy, then let it go. Use MOSLO.EXE if something runs too fast. Or at lest thats how I used to play DOS games on my new PC. Later I used to play natively under WinXP with the help of WDMSound and Speedset.exe. Now I have a 486 or DOSbox if I am lazy.
@1xWertzui - I've got a computer with a 120MHz Pentium 1 for my DOS gaming needs and will move over Golden Axe to that computer. If things still don't work correctly, I have an old Packard Bell Legend 316SX running a 25MHz AMD 386SX. It might make Golden Axe very sluggish, on the other hand. I only ever played Star Wars X-Wing on the 316SX and the computer REALLY struggles to play the game with minimal graphical detail. Golden Axe should fare better, though. I'll test it out and report back
Oh, and forget about PCI sound cards. Most are complete crap. The only ones really worth having are the Yamaha YMF724 and equivalent sound cards. I've already got a SoundBlaster Pro 2.0 accompanied by an Ensoniq Soundscape in my Pentium 1 and a SoundBlaster Vibra16 in my 316SX(all are ISA sound cards). I refuse to use anything that does not contain a real Yamaha YMF262 on the sound card(or an ASIC implementation like my SoundBlaster 16 Value or all of the Yamaha YMF7xx sound cards).
The backgrounds in this actually look higher resolution than the original arcade version but the animation doesnt look as smooth though, that could be just this video making it look choppy. This is like a very high resolution Genesis version and that is in no way a bad thing, very good version.
@lightdark28 LoL, I remember playing this game with my old friend.. he lives nearby but I havent seen him for 3 years while I left primary school and went to another.. I meet him when I was 6 and for another 6 we did stuff.. i remember playing this with him.. One of us wanted to be old guy with axe.. he was the best... ;P
Rather, GA2 on the Genesis was more or less a remake of the original game, rather than a true sequel. The PC port is like a cross between the original arcade game, and the Genesis port (but more like the Genesis GA1 than the arcade).
What a classic! PC Sounds, DOS graphics, floppy disk. In those times had a special atmosphere and "feeling" of these DOS games! I never forget how favorite was that game in my school computers for everybody in the early 90's! We have to build one time machine :)
like the way they scream when ya keel them. it like when i played it on arcade or sega, its all like, it interupts the music for a split second and you her them scream! btw what do you use to record these? camtasia?
I just recorded these with DOSBox's built in recorder. I did the Double Dragon video with the GensPlus (I believe it's called) emulator's built in recorder.
