  • Well, to be fair,House of the Rising Sun was based on a very old folk song in Europe from the 1600's about a brothel. It traveled to the US, & eventually came to be re-interpreted to have its roots placed in New Olreans, as the song name & lyrics suggest. It has no known author anymore, given its age, so really, everyone who plays it is just playing a lovely old folk song. This isn't even the first recording of the song, though its a great rendition!! The first was by Clarence Ashley in the 20's

  • Louisiana native Huddy "Leadbelly" Ledbetter & RobertJohnson from Mississippi single handley birthed rock'n roll.

  • Louisiana native alone with RobertJohnson from Mississippi birthed rock'n roll. These are true the Gods of three genres of music. Country, Rhythm&Blues, Blues.

  • i dont like this song in a major key

  • Am I so drunk or does he do it in something like a waltz rhythm?

  • Huddy Leadbetter was a genius.

  • @MrNxjohn - You're a complete idiot. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Here's an idea, numbnuts. Contact *ANYONE* who's covered this song or any other of those blues singers (who can't play or sing, in your eyes) and ask them what they think of Leadbelly and Robert Johnson and their like..

You going to apply your charming epithets to them too? Eric Clapton, The Animals, The Beatles, and god knows how many others?

    Freaking idiot.

  • @archona54 no i never said all blues singers cant sing (i like alot of blues) just this one i cant. even nina simone sounds better then this one and i'm not a fan of her you can call me a idiot all you want but i'm not the one crying over what some one said

  • @MrNxjohn i never asked you your opinion of the song. i just asked you a simple question. and my mom is dead.

  • @MrNxjohn Quit trolling fuckboy.

  • @sonicscreamingblue i'm not trolling you fagget i like this song i looked for more covers of it and found this shit he cant sing he cant even get his words out and he cant play

  • @MrNxjohn You know, I was gonna come up with some witty rebuttal. But then I went to your homepage and saw how you have an "How to make LSD" video in your

'likes". Lol go figure. You must obviously be a dope fiend to not like Leadbelly. And if liking penis makes me a faggot, so be it. I'm the the biggest fag there ever was. Can't get enough of that MAN MEAT (I'm a female btw) XD. Don't you feel all big and bad now? Go shove off, you prick.

  • @sonicscreamingblue - You tell 'em, sonic.

  • @sonicscreamingblue yes my friend thinks he can make lsd after looking on here (lol like youtube will show you how to make it) i dont take lsd but yes i do smoke weed i dont know what a dope fiend i never said you liked dick i called you a fagget witch any one with half a brain can tell if your a man you like dick but if your a girl you like puff why wud i feel big and bad by saying what i feel and as for you coming up with some witty rebuttal i dont think you cud. take care

  • @MrNxjohn Please excuse me as I attempt to translate your incoherent banter. Where the hell are the quotation marks? Looks like someone needs to up the Seroquel dosage. ...........What ever you say buddy. Lol

  • @MrNxjohn You have no musical culture.

  • @MrNxjohn Shit yourself ye cunt

  • wow is it possible that 'House Of The Rising Sun' by Animals is cover ? Because part of text their song is identic with these text by Leadbelly,

  • @konvicce read the top comment brah

  • @konvicce ya think....

  • @konvicce can someone call captain obvious? he's needed

  • So many songs go back to the blues ........amazing music genre

  • i want that mans guitar

  • So many bands did covers of this mans songs...

  • fuck this version has way more soul than the animals version.

  • Can someone tell me who sung this song first? or the earliest recorded?

  • pisses me off that a group that did a good cover of this got 14 million more views than the original, just shows that some good music goes forever without getting recognized

  • Love the ron paul advertisement before this, VOTE RON PAUL FOR CHANGE. If you support job opportunity, lower taxes, the constitution, getting wall street out of politics, ect. Do the research before you aimlessly vote.

  • sorry - don't like this version very much.

  • Pretty wild rhythm!

  • pscyhwards are warehouses for lonely, lost souls. they take away your shoelaces and sharp objects so you can't kill yourselves. 3times psychward 'nuff 4me, not going back

  • Music doesn't come much more pure than this

  • National treasure! The treasure of the world! one-piece

  • King of the 12 Strings!

  • Facinating. I have another Leadbelly version on a CD, that sounds very different. This version seems to be closer to Animals hit.

  • "the animals" didn't write this song!?!? your kidding me! wow this dude is a great artist man.

  • @BistkitEatingBulldog Leadbelly didn't write this either.

  • @nyranjer1 WHAT!?!?! wow ha then who did? wow man thats disapointing , did he write were did you sleep last night?

  • And their was me thinking that The Animals write and sang this originally. Well another theory bites the dust lol.

  • @samusic160 yeah, noone really knows who wrote house of rising sun... you can actually find older recordings of this by clarence ashley

  • @samusic160 Silly you, don't you know that virtually all white rock and roll bands from the sixties including the rolling stones, the animals, and the doors ripped off of earlier black artists, usually giving them no credit or money for it.

  • @idiotgarageband Thats probably why i never knew that the song was from a black artist, because nobody ever mentions it lol. My fault i should be more aware of these things.

  • Comment removed

  • @idiotgarageband Leadbelly didn't write this song...although I'm not debating the huge influences of black blues and folk singers. And I'm betting all the bands you mentioned were mainly inspired to do this song by Dylan.

  • @idiotgarageband - Crossroads anyone?

  • @samusic160 Leadbelly wasn't the origin of this song fyi...

  • @samusic160 i hope that now you don't think Leadbelly wrote it..^^

  • @Nerudah No, my question is who did write it? Lol.

  • @samusic160 Texas Alexander recorded it in 1927 so -.-

  • @samusic160 lol yeah i thought that too .

  • @samusic160 Josh White, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Jack Elliott, Dave Van Ronk , Bob Dylan and Nina Simone plus a bunch of other people did this before The Animals. Eric Burden learned it from Bob Dylan who earned it from Dave Van Ronk.

  • @samusic160 Its an old southern hymm. I dont think anyone knows who wrote it originally

  • @samusic160 Animals version is tremendously great, but they didn't write any of their songs.

  • I was still amazed at how retarded most of the comments on this page are, It just sickened me to read this drivel while I was listing to Ledbetter ( His real name ) make magic with his talent and I could not enjoy the music after I had read some of the garbage that was spewed on this page. You should be ashamed of your selves.

  • So much emotion it's ridiculous.

  • Am i the only afperson on here who feels a weird connection with this music. i can't place the word but it strikes somethin in me.

  • Brilliant. Just brilliant.

  • Love this version!

  • Amazing. Origin.

  • that shit blows

  • @ryanslow210 your shit blows.

  • @ryanslow210 your moms a fat whore...this song is awesome

  • @GeekStinkBreath737 your mom got fired from the mayo factory for whiping mayo on her lips.

  • @ryanslow210 that literally mindfucked me cause it made -100% sense

  • leadbelly i thank you for your genious lyrics but I am glad that a lot of your songs were covered. I just kind of hope that you would have liked the newer versions.

  • i can sit back and drink a pabst beer to this.

  • @davidlucy0327 be better with a mason jar of moon shine

  • @davidlucy0327 wow you drink weak beer hahahahaha

  • @davidlucy0327 fuckin hipster...

  • @davidlucy0327 nice call. i'm doing that right now.

  • @wevelostDon this was before the animals

  • @GeekStinkBreath737 You're wasting your time. Let the uninformed idiots be uninformed idiots. :-)

  • @dbkparm lol true that man

  • Sorry but animals are 100% better, sorry leadbelly

  • @blackops7psn u do gotta imit this is as well pretty goood :) i personally think Leadbelly was better but its ok :)

  • This is the 1948 version and not the 1944 version RagtimeDorianHenry.

  • @FierySkillz Agreed !

  • good o'l ledbelly, much respect....

  • His best version, obviously by 1948 time had caught up with him. Well done, ragtime.

    Thanks

    Ernie

  • @ErnieK57 This is the 1948 version.

  • NO Lead Belly NO Beatles- I didnt make that up George Harrison did! go to the indiegogo site & look up leadbellyfilm

  • According to one legend he got his name leadbelly when he told a madam his name was ledbetter she felt his stomach and the guy was so ripped she nicknamed him leadbelly!

  • I love how he manages to make it sound like a happy song. :D

  • 1 faggot likes cock in his mouth. Just saying.

  • @TechnologyAssassin Whats wrong with gay poeple?

  • @TechnologyAssassin I think all gay people like cock in their mouth; part of the reason they're gay I think - can't expect an ignorant and racist american to figure that out though.

  • @ptwowo Obviously, I was emphasizing. And in no way does that make me a racist..great way at trying to prove MY ignorance.

  • @TechnologyAssassin you are ignorant to the fact the gay ppl don't like your kind seeding negative comments. I'll be ignoring you now :)

  • @ptwowo Do I care? I know they don't like it.

  • @ptwowo

You are truly and completely retarded: get a life.

  • NO one can touch this version of this song....The man is a (was) GENIUS.

  • tabs or chords PLS

  • @kenjikent are you seriously going to wait for someone to look something up for you and await their link? look them up yourself; better yet use your ears and pick it out like I did.

  • @ptwowo nevermind that i was low. now i can play whatever i want to play

  • WOW! I WAS wrong. I found the copywritten file. Wonder if they messed up when recording. It's a Smithsonian recording called "Leadbelly's Last Sessions". Only song I've heard where his voice is so high. The comments I found were:

"Recorded over the course of three nights in 1948, approximately 1 yr before his death... the only commercial recordings of Leadbelly ever made on magnetic tape. The sound here is primitive by most standards..."

I prefer his 1944 "In New Orleans" version

  • I'm 99% sure that this it not Leadbelly. It does sound like s 12-string guitar (his signature instrument) but it is not his voice.

  • @MarkForrestArbar you are wrong my friend

  • @MarkForrestArbar Sorry man, this is definitely Lead Belly. No doubt.

  • such a great performance

  • house of the rising sun was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting ,The oldest known existing recording is by Clarence Ashley in 1933

  • Right, that's it. I am going to start a one man crusade to get youtube to build in an auto replay option. This is one of the very few recordings that I can listen to over and over again and no matter how many times I play it, at the end I still want more; I feel like Oliver Twist! This is by far the best version of this classic I have heard to date. In these silly polls they do from time to time does anyone know where Leadbelly got listed for most influential blues musicians?

  • @TheRepented OK its called youtubedownloader....ummm set your mp3 player to "repeat" I think.

  • Fuckin awsome, that was fckin awsome...

  • Did he compose the song?!!

  • @glosoly

no, it's not know who composed it.

  • i didnt know the animals didnt write this

  • Lead Belly's 12 string was tuned(lowest to highest);

    B-B

    E-E

    A-A

    D-D

    F#-F#

    B-B

The top strings were all unison(including the 3rd course), the 4th & 5th were octaves, the 6th was a double octave(the high string tuned to the same note as the 1st course,

  • @butte17 who cares

  • is this the origional version ?! its so the best !

  • @welshysheep there is no original. it's a folk song with unknown origins, covered by many artists.

  • @arsydb Actually, it is argued that the origins of the song come from a English Folk Song, about a Brothel. Brought overseas, and with help from over time, the song had evolved into the version we know today.

  • @EnterMyUserNameHere Actually it was an English Folk Song about a woman who cheated on her husband..the original folk song ended badly

  • @EnterMyUserNameHere creative explanation.

  • does someone knows the tunning???? thanks!!!!

  • He was very fond of walzes (3/4 time).....Ledbetter is one of my family names...I think Huddie and I must be distant cousins.

  • @slidesharp1 You think I give a shit about what you think? You think you're insulting my youtube page is going to hurt my feelings? I looked at your page and it looks just like an american rednecks page should. You're naive to think a person just has one account for youtube or anything else. go back to playing your banjo and fucking your sister; I'll go back to being a better person that you could ever hope to imagine simply because I am not a retarded american.

  • see, for all the artists that rip off leadbelly, i think Tom Jones was the only one to give him a shout out in one of his songs, no?
