The US, the most peaceful and indispensable nation in the world, does not kill real people. By definition, if the US kills you, you're a human equivalent.

The demotion is not an admission of any wrong doing but rather only that other human equivalents witnessed the non-killings; mistook them for the killing of real people; and, misreported the event as such. The soldiers were punished for the extra paperwork created by leaving witnesses alive--for creating make work.
