I had some problems with Steve Jobs up until a few days ago, but once I actually took the time to hear this guy speak, I have to say I'm pretty impressed with his charisma, his enthusiasm, and most of all his sincere belief in what he was doing. I went from a 'ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead' attitude to one of admiration and appreciation in a very short time. Really sorry he's gone.
Any chance of you adding USB 3s to your iMacs soon Steve? You just refreshed the line up (as of 31/7/10) and it confirms the trend along with their slow shift to Core i3s, i5s ad i7s, and their rejection of Blu-Ray, that Apple now play catch up with technology instead of being leaders.
@PurushaDesa I think that their new introductions of Thunderbolt i/o is really taking a step ahead of USB 3.0. The Windows machines are now playing catch up on hardware.
Light Peak/Thunderbolt is a very exciting port but it's a shame they couldn't find a way to implement it on the iPad 2. They've essentially got a year of exclusivity to build up a peripheral eco-system but I haven't seen much out yet. A dock connector-to-TB cable would be great for speeding up syncing (given the persistent lack of a wireless method), though more technically proficient users tell me the core architecture of iOS differs too much from a Mac, for that to be possible.
The thing about Apple with USB is this. Before Apple standardized USB in there computers, tons of PC manufacturers were still using PS/2 inputs for there keyboard and mouse peripherals until early 2005. I have a Dell from 2005 and it used a PS/2 connection for it's keyboard and mouse, I had thought, why not USB? Than I found out Apple had it standardized while others were still behind.
@ViciousDave4Life I think that Apple was always a little ahead in terms of innovation in technology , including Firewire 400 and 800 , USB , Multitouch and more. Awesome :D
@ViciousDave4Life People who build their computers buy motherboards. Motherboard manufacturers standardized USB well before 2005...go look at newegg in Q1 2002, all the MBs have USB.
@ViciousDave4 Life Apple lead a lot of things in the world. USB was one of them. And I am not surprised that people blindly believed Steve Jobs when he said that flash technology is the past. He was the man who standardised soooo many things in the computer world.
@luigi90900 I sure hope so. I hate USB. Its great for keyboards, mice, and inkjet printers, but its over use for data storage etc is a joke. FireWire is a far superior interface, but it just never took off. Hopefully Thunderbolt's incredible speed and backward compatibility plus support from Intel will see USB hit the I/O graveyard soon.
So incredibly interesting to watch back through these older product announcements and watch the growth/change of Apple. A truly great, innovative company!
I love my iMacs. Both the G3 Rev. A and the Aluminium Intel one. Looks kinda nice when you put them close. This one here is what it started out as, and this one is what its now.

And to be fair... The four product line-up (for their PC hardware at least) is still true to this very day. Worked out well didn't it :)

"Apple has jumped into the lead on USB."
And now USB 3 has been out for months and there is only a rumor that the next iMac will have USB 3.

USB was definitely a key investment for Apple considering that's the core connection for the ipod.
keithyw 3 years ago 2
USB was "forced" onto the iPod to get it to easily connect to Windows pcs.. at first Apple tried to impose FireWire as the standard
stemel 3 years ago 2
Because the first gen USB was pitifully slow compared to FireWire, and USB 2 wasn't out there at the time of the first iPod.
Also, who here couldn't stand the lack of power to the port on the keyboard?
