  • I want to get a brown standard poodle

  • They don't cost alot to groom and its not that difficult if you treat them like what they are, working class water dogs. Keep their coat short and don't treat them like fashion accessories. God, it irritates me that they are treated like a french delicacy when in all reality a poodle is a hard working GERMAN dog, that started in Asia. Its history is that of a game dog, not a freaking useless pompom. Lord can you imagine if Rotties or Collies had to deal with this crap?

  • Standard poodles are the best dogs ever, then labs.....why they hafta go and "mix" them is beyond me....seems like so much work(genetically speaking) to just unravel indiscriminately......

  • faeriemadesoaps, I plan to get a standard in a couple yrs so am starting to research now. I'm planning to learn how to do a kennel clip. I worked for a vet several yrs ago and helped groom a few dogs so have a basic idea what I'm up for. What age would you start getting the puppy acclimated to the sound of the clipper, etc.? Also, how often do you generally bathe so as not to dry out their skin? I'll be doing my own research, but If you have any other tips, I'm all ears!

  • I plan to learn how to do a kennel clip myself to save money, plus I think it's the cutest clip of all. Got any tips for me?

  • The Kennel Club in the UK classifies Standard Poodles in the Utility Group and the AKC has stated that the breed is one of the two best all around breeds. They are not now, nor were they ever, a "froo froo" dog.

  • You are apparently completely unaware that poodles are highly intelligent, and therefore will be very manipulative if given half a chance. You are currently being told what to do by your dog, and accepting it gladly. Be the boss, be the pack leader - size doesn't matter - canines from Mastiffs to Toy Poodles only understand hierarchy. And right now, you are not top dog. This does not mean cruelty - far from it. -You- need training 1st before you get a standard. Big ones are different.

  • @TheMarkfsanderson Great advice RE: establishing yourself as an Alpha!

  • @TheMarkfsanderson I think you should mention how easy it is to do the grooming yourself. My dog sat on the table & we had a nice afternoon together. I paid a groomer to come over to my house to do it the first time & he showed me all the tips... worst, pulling the hair out of their ears, but if you start it when they are really young & keep them in check it isn’t a big deal, just one more little thing to consider when getting this truly great animal as part of your family.

  • I have a question I have a toy poodle and I would love another but Im afraid my dog will not accept or might get depressed if I get another dog, see hes very possesive over me . Do you think it would be a problem

  • Poodles are kick ass. The Germans bred them to be hunting dogs, and then the french stole them and ruined their reputation! D:<

  • @LucidWhispers actually they go as far back as Egypt and the German didnt start them out as workers, the Asians did, but Germanic nomads made them what we REAL poodle enthusiasts know them for and that's water dogs. Gypsies turned them into frou frou useless items by exaggerating the working style coat to please their customers, and the french nobility went insane with it. Germany has given up its right the poodle, but I say its only because the consumers have turned the dog into laughing stock.

  • I have a standard poodle and they are the best breed! they are active, intelligent, personable and all around good dogs! They are good with people, good with animals and on. I hate that they have the stigma of "frou frou" because they sure are not!

I do all the grooming on my dog. If you start them young, it's easy. They know it's part of life. Regular baths, trim the face feet & tail area every 2-3 weeks & just clip them down every few months. Brushing is important if you keep the hair long.

  • This Poodle wants to be petted really bad. That's definitely a Standard Poodle. Cute as can be. I wanted to reach out and hug it.

  • but cant one trim their hair at home?

    and save the money?

or does it have to be done a special way

  • @ssips720 Like with many breeds, with enough patience and experience, yes, you can do the grooming yourself. But you must learn it somewhere, be it on your own poo or from a shop/school etc. We went from paying $100/every 4 weeks to doing it ourselves and it's been a great experience and a good bonding experience with the poos and us.

  • @DesertRidgeline Good grooming advice! Thanks!

  • I look at all he poodle rescues in my state and none of them have standard poodles but an abundance of "cockapoos".

  • I have a poodle and he is the best :P

poodles only look like foo foos when you mess with their hair cuts and make them look with the stupid pompoms on their hips and a bun on their heads...and shave them half way???

like a prissy dog... I never understood those hair cuts .. I am a dog groomer

  • @busafwine Those silly haircutts were originally to keep their joints warm while retrieving foul in cold water....not really a froo froo job but it required a froo froo hair-do :)

  • Poodles are very alert and can be fantastic watch dogs and they are keen hunters. They love the water and the woods. What's so great about them is that they can ALSO just as much be a lap dog when you bring them back home and bathe em. :-P

They CAN be frou frou its just a matter of what you want out of the dog.

  • @ClefDeDavid88 Amen!

  • @kunzy3000 how would u know . I only have 3 standard poodles and only have one litter a year . they all live in my house with me. how is that not small scale ? you should be fixed.

  • Poodles often score 2nd most intelligent of all dog breeds. If not 1st. Usually border collies are considered most intelligent.

  • I am a small scale standard poodle breeder . I wouldnt give up my babies for nothing in the world. I show them also . I wish everyone knew how awesome these dogs are.I am glad people are looking to learn about them. as for conformation you want them to be square as the length of the legs from pad to wither(shoulder) should be the same as the length from chest to rump. eyes should be almond shaped and all points should be black(nose, eye rims, ect)unless you have a brown then all that is brown too

  • I didnt know that!!

  • what a cute dog

  • It really doesn't tell HOW to select a standard poodle, it just tells about things to consider if you are thinking about the breed. I was expecting more about the confirmation, health things one can look for, etc. But I own a standard and love her and she can be frou frou if she chooses to sit and look the part....but most of the time she's the biggest goof in the world.

  • i wish we can get it through peoples brain THEY ARE NOT FROO FROO!!!!!!!!

  • my dog is a poodle and their is not one once or froo froo in him :D

    I love him!!!

  • @stargazer209

    What's a froo froo?

  • haha, that dog reminds me of my standard.. Always rolling' around on the carpet..

  • Not only does the poodle cut help protect vital organs but also helps to make them more aerodynamic so that they can retrieve quicker.

  • the poodle cut arriginated in germany, german hunters made the poodle cut to protect the dogs vital organs from the cold water, poodles are water retrievers

  • I really hate when people give these sweet dogs those ridiculous haircuts...If anyone knows, is there any reason for it?

  • The breed originated in Germany as a water retriever. The stylish "Poodle clip" was designed by hunters to help the dogs move through the water more efficiently. The patches of hair left on the body are meant to protect vital organs and joints which are susceptible to cold.

  • Thats pretty interesting :) Thanks for responding!

  • i have a standard poodle named mercades shes 4 she so adorable

  • Poodles are not froo froo dogs

  • nice vid! =)
