If you look carefully, you see that the battery is unable to turn the prop over the last time the passenger tries to start the engine. This is because they have been restarting the engine many times before this clip starts. He stops trying because his hand in in the pilot's way.

OK. So what we see happening in this video is not miraculous, not superhuman, and yet definitely not something to be passed off as routine. It's an illustration of what happens when good training, confidence in that training, and a some good luck combine to defeat what was some unknown combination of bad luck, bad planning, and/or bad workmanship. Congratulations to these two guys.

This is real, it's all over the news. Pilots have a legal right to land anywhere in an emergency. The FAA might take their license if they fail to follow procedure, or do something stupid like run out of gas, but they can land on your lawn if they have to.

That's silly. Look at their hands. The engine is OFF and they turn the key, that's called starting the engine. The second time the pilot tries to start the engine the passenger takes over, and the engine runs for a few seconds and quits while his hand is on the key. Believe me, the FAA will look at this. Have you ever been in a small plane?

Maybe they would've been more successful had they of followed some form of checklist and checked things like carb. heat and mixture instead of just turning the ignition repeatedly..

They did not have time. Really, come on now, have you ever been in a situation like this, you don't have time for a checklist. When this movie starts they were already in trouble, and had restarted the engine several times. It's too warm for carb heat, and mixture isn't the problem. Looks to me like a fuel delivery problem, either empty tanks, clogged line or bad pump. You see them start the engine several times, it runs for a bit, then dies. It's running out of fuel. Good job on the landing.

Even so, checklists for things like engine failure or fire during flight should be relatively to memory. Agreeably a fuel delivery problem seems to be the most likely cause and it was a really good landing and smart move considering the circumstances.
