@babwvb The further away the string post is away from the nut, the more it makes extra unwanted noise. The Tape and sweat band are probably used to stop it. Or they slide em onto the fret board to dampen strings for tapping or big sweeps.

It's been bugging me on what it does. Brendon's is huge cloth or something wrapped around and spyros's looks to just be a piece of tape, Whats the purpose??

@MrMrdarksid Those are 7 strings actually. And I might be wrong, but I believe people tie scarfs, bands, to the stalk of the guitar to keep the strings from ringing as much, mainly for when they want to do lead guitar

@matthewtop On one guitar he's actually using tape to prevent the string portion behind the nut from ringing, this is a common issue when recording, unless you prefer some character... The other guitarist seems to have a constructed "bungee" out of some cloth and tape, but it's behind the nut the entire time probably being used for the same purpose on this track...(Not dampening) Although it is SLIGHTLY on the first fret,(maybe just the nut) so it could be providing some dampening.
