We evolved to better master our surroundings through incredibly minor changes over millions of millions of years, which result in major changes from the original creature. Imagine, if you will, that there was a split, one group of "monkeys" broke away and evolved to be humans, the other group stayed relatively the same. Evolution is drastic changes over millions of years due to minor genetic changes.

During this time period, the Roman government, which occupied Israel, ordered sheep herding to be done specifically in the non-raining seasons, which, in the middle east, is winter. Also, a mass of shepherding would always occur in the beginning or ending of herding seasons, in which Jesus's birth occurred. So the Church isn't far off the exact date.

@Possimpablee Congratulations, Jesus was one of the least common names in Hebrew countries at the time, and as I mentioned, this Jesus was 1. put to death by crucifixion2. by order of Pilate 3. for heresy and treason. Sounds like the Jesus we all know and love if you ask me. Whether or not he was a God-sent miracle-worker is up to religious speculation, however, Jesus of the Bible did exist.

So, in places like the US and Brazil, where religion flourishes, market stability is low, people are less educated, and depend more on religion; that is it's general function.
