EXPERIMENTAL is required for a homebuilt aircraft over 254 lbs regardless of how old the design is. If this is an ultralight, which apparently it is, then no tail number required nor does EXPERIMENTAL need to be placarded anywhere on aircraft.
And I'm pretty sure NX registration numbers are only on aircraft your grand pappy flew, circa 30's and 40's, and I think late 20's. Now tail numbers are 3 digit followed by 2 letters.
@MyDogBob2001 Not an ultralight; it is an LSA, or Light Sport Aircraft. N-number is on the lower rudder in red. To qualify as an ultralight, the following criteria must all be met:
One occupant only
Weighs 254 lbs or less, empty
Max. cruise of 55 knots, stall of 24 or less
Max. fuel capacity of 5 gallons.
The Hummels are just under 300 pounds, cruise at 100 knots, stall at 38. And carry 6 gallons' fuel.
Re: Part 103. Not sure how long 103 has been in effect; I've been building and flying for the past 20 years & it has always been a factor for me. Let's see, a ramp check, a fine, license suspension for "x" many days. Also didn't see the required "experimental" clearly visable near the entrance or inside. But my eyes are as good as they once were.
@mmichaeldonavon If the design is 30 or more years old "Experimental' on the side of the fuse is not required if the letter "X" preceeds the N number. Such as NX712lJ.
You're half right. The plane is too heavy for Part 103, which means it DOES require a tail number to be flown in US airspace whether controlled or not.
You right, seems a N# wasn't required years ago. I been out the game for a while, not sure if it's always been that way, or if they changed the rules.
why it's 20 thousandths sheet metal wobbling. My sadler Vampire made that sound too. It would be worse with a 1/2 VW motor though - lots of vibration at low revs.
it looks like dust on the wings

Is this version Part 103 legal? I didn't notice a tail number on the plane.
flmason 3 years ago
This aircraft is not Part 103 and does not require a N number, as long as it's not flown in controlled airspace.
