Toni's lowest note is only Bb2? I thought she could much lower than that... I mean, if Aretha can go down to an F2 and Brandy down to an G2, surely she can too?!
Toni, Brandy, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, and Aaliyah are my favorites. Mariah is #1 overall, though.
Celine, Whitney, Christina, Aretha, and JoJo all have great lower registries, though. Especially Aretha live, and Christina has one of my favorite D3 notes ever. Great video!
i was dissapointed that anita baker wasn't on here, she has an amazing lower register. As far as this list goes Toni has the best (in my opinion) lower register of the group since as a low contralto she uses it more often so it has more nuance. Jojo also uses hers well and as a spinto saprano she's very good at maintaining her tone in the low part of her range. Mariah also has a great lower range which she uses for dramatic effect well. The rests voices kinda got a bit to lyric.I like a warm reg
@Stefano94x Facts can be proven. The bottom half of the women I named have nothing special to their voices, and that's that! I dont indulge in delusion such as yourself, hun. So again, "Lol @ Aaliyah, Jojo, & Beyonce being added when there's absolutely NOTHING special about either of there voices". My opinion is there and you'll just have to deal with it! Do have a seat!
@QueenMariahCarey You're just an opinionated, basic average listener who doesn't know shit about vocals. Jojo is nobody, I'll give you that, but the rest of your comment is an utter fail.
The one who has to sit down here is you, because you clearly need to be schooled.
@Stefano94x The fail was you telling me your opinion as if mine would change lol. My opinion will NEVER change, idiot! All of the women I listed have mediocre voices at best. So once again, Lol @ Aaliyah, Jojo, & Beyonce being added when there's absolutely NOTHING special about either of there voices. Deal with it! CHOW!
@Raoulirshan I didn't find Mariah's very good and I like her. Perhaps there is better ones out there for here as there are for sure regarding Whitney.
I really don't see how the Harmonized notes actually work, because I'm pretty sure half of these singers cant even hit a Bb2 or Lower... The Only females I seen go to a B2 are Toni And Mariah..
That said...Brandy slayed them all: the lows were soooo clear and controlled.
Mariah comes second and Toni is an extremely close third but I'm 100% positive that Toni has better Bb2s and B2s than somewhere out there. Then again, Mariah has done all of those notes and more LIVE...on multiple occasions..
Then it's my girl Aaliyah (beautifully expressive lows). After those four, Aretha, Beyonce, Whitney, Celine, Christina and then Jojo.
What song was Brandy singing when she was singing the B2?
@Dam112 Mariah has an extensive lower register, but her tessitura is nowhere near contralto. The only pure contraltos here are Brandy and Toni. The others are mezzos (Beyonce, Aaliyah, Aretha, Christina and maybe Jojo) or sopranos (Whitney, Mariah and maybe Céline).
@Dam112 Well... She has great lows and she can phrase well down there. But your speaking voice has little to do with your vocal type. Mariah has a great lower register, but the tessitura where she sings is pretty much soprano. Soprano or maybe light mezzo, but hardly alto. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't classify her as an alto to be honest.
@Dam112 I agree with you. I don't get how the one thats arguing with you can argue that mariahs tessitura is her lower range. She says it herself, she regards herself an an alto because she says that she is most comfortable in her lower range. Yes she has an extensive range anyway but barely any women can go down to an E2 so that definitely says something about her comfort skill and ability in the contralto range.
@Stefano94x Well you'd be very wrong!! Mariah is a Contralto, though she is a lyric one. Her voice fall perfectly in her lower register..ever hear her speaking voice?
@Stefano94x I have NO problem sitting, sitting he truth that Mariah is 100% alto, and despite her 'whilstle-ability', her voice, and tonal qualities extremely low!!! I knew from the very start....but don't take my word for it, ask her yourself, she has ALWAYS maintained what her vocal type is, where her register normally falls. She's CONTRALTO!! This debate has been settled years ago, ur late!! Do some research before you try to pop off at the mouth!! God day 2 u!!-)
@Thkmra Idiot, she sounds nothing like a true contralto. Her tessitura is nowhere near contralto. A contralto could SING 5th octave notes, but not with that type of comfort. Her tessitura itself is soprano. You know nothing about singing, you are just copying-off shit, hence why you are not in the position to get arrogant. Stay in your comfort zone.
No matter if you capitalize your shit, you are still wrong. Chill out.
@Stefano94x ok she can sing soprano but she consider herself alto ok yea she can high soprano it doesnt matter we say if she consider herself alto then let it be these artist had vocal training im sure they know their voices more than we do
@tazzy198525 Aaliyah's tessitura is not soprano at all. Same goes for Mariah being a "contralto". These women have just massive ranges, which is why Aaliyah can sing high and Mariah can sing low. But vocal range has little to do with your vocal type.
Mariah's tessitura is pretty much soprano, and Aaliyah's is pretty much mezzo.
Christina isn't a soprano either. Even with her bad technique, she would have much more ease on notes as low as B4...
@Stefano94x oh my gosh if they say what they are dont try to tell them what they are thats not right they had vocal training im sure they know what they are like i said aaliyah said shes a soprano im not talking about the ranges and plus u going by her singing style which is very soft with falsetto thats her ''STYLE'' mariah carey even said herself shes natural alto her voice os raspy christina is soprano just because someone can sing low doesnt make u alto or singing high make u a soprano
@Thkmra No Mariah is a soprano friend, she said it once in a tv show that she was "more of an alto because despite the fact of my head voice being high it is very airy" that´s why she said it :)
@pedy19 Um....NO!! No offense, but is this even subjectt for debate any longer? she's stating MANY times over(*I'll provide links) that she's an Alto that happens to have flexible vocal cords enabling her to sing in the whistle register. Any trained vocalist, or ear can tell her register is VERY low, and that's where her voice fall naturally..listen to her speaking voice!! And again, this isn't even debatable, as she's officially classified as an ALTO!!
@Thkmra NO! she has been classified as soprano by music critics. Her lower notes are a bit forced and not as natural as her medium and higher parts of her voice. And no her speaking voice is low sometimes I agree on that but still there are other times where it isn´t
@pedy19 This isn't going anywhere, but again, save a few ppl here, and there(u inc), Mariah s recognized as an ALTO, specificaly a Lyric contralto. Those 'critics' you've mentioned, are few and far between, and like U, are clearly confusing RANGE, for vocal tessitura, and overall texture of voice, in her case her low, and very deep. Hitting high notes does NOT=Soprano!! Save yourself the trouble and ask her yourself on twitter what her vocal type is, she'll tell you for the umptenth time!!
@Thkmra I know hitting notes doesn´t define anything, but what If I tell you that she sings comfortably in the 5th Octave as Sopranos do? her head voice is too high and light to be of contralto, also she is able to SIng in mixed voice in the 5th octave, something very few contemporary sopranos can, and her voice isn´t dark and heavy as contraltos. You clearly have never heard a true contralto sing.
@pedy19 , she clearly is NOT comfortable hitting higher notes in the 5th octave(E5, and up), not anymore, w/o much effort. Her vocal decline as been well documented over the past 10 years or so.Ex: VOF *see the '92 version of unplugged where her voice hadn't properly matured vs 2005 version...Ocatve, tone texture=HUGE diffrence. Lastly not ALL alto's have a heavy deep, dark tone. ala Toni Braxton, or Cher some in fact are light,& 'airy'.Brandy, Jojo, Rihanna..like Mariah are Lyric contraltos!!
@Thkmra Well not belting notes in the 5th octave, but her head voice still takes her to the 5th octave quite easily and the voice types were created to define Classical singers so, in sopranos it refers to head /mix voice (mostly with head) not in belting because there is no such thing in opera. Plus Christina Aguilera is a soprano and she cant hit notes in the 5th octave without yelling that much, is she a contralto for that? NO!
@Thkmra Oh and Maria Callas , who was simply the best Assoluta had only 10 fabulous years, after that her voice was gone, is she not an Assoluta for that? Don´t think so. Plus Mariah can still hit F5 and even sing E5 yes Sing them as in We Belong Together the highest part (not the belt) where she has to sing several E5s :) Oh and she has sung emotions Live 2011. Also Celine Dion can´t sing E5 as before, is she a contralto? And the answer is still NOP
@pedy19 Perfect ex of Mariah displaying NATURAL range, pretty much singing the entire song on the 3rd Octave!! Specifically B2-G4..that's 2nd tenor!! Well outside of ANY soprano's control. She's not just 'touching' a few of those notes, she's HITTING them throughtout the entire song, with ease, and effortlessly . You see how bright, supple, and rich her lower register actually is? That's where her voice naturally falls. Striking diffrence in the amount of effort she executes from high belting!!
@ThkmraShe can, but rarely does. & E5, and F5, aren't outside of an Alto's range, to say so would be ridiculous! Typically pure 'sopranic' range is G5 & upwards, w/o losing power, texture, strength, and tone. Singing below C4 is not outside of a sopranos' range either. But that occurs less frequently. Comfort & ability to hold the notes is key also in accessing if its apart of one's range, not just 'touched'. To further my point on Mariah see her tribte to Stevie wonder of 'U and I'!!
@Thkmra No, and you don´t use "2nd" tenor to solist that definition is applied on choirs only. And her lowest notes are not as ressonant and strong, and effortless as her mid and higher range. See if she had to sing without a microphone, would their lowest notes be heard? no they wouldn´t. Would a contralto be heard even in her lowest part Yes she would. Mariah´s tessitura is that of a soprano my friend.
@Thkmra Pretty much Mariah has just been singing outside of her natural range 4 yrs; beautifully, and skillfully, but the fact is sooner or later it was bound to catch up with her. The degree to which a high-pitched voice sounds at 19, to a low, 'warm one at 35 is evidenced. As ur voice matures it goes to where it always was auppose to, for lack of better words!! In reading, and coming upon MULTIPLE statements of her 'flexible vocal' cords', she confirmed: Alto with range. agin ask her urself!!
@Thkmra Are u mad?! baritone ?! LOL she speaks in the 3rd octave and sometimes hits notes in the 2nd octave on purporse. I have created my ytoutube account in 2007 and I also thought she was a contralto, then after searching a lot and reading a lot as well as watching classical videos, i realize she is clearly not one. And no as you go older your voice gets heavier, it gains weight. In women it usually happens in the 40 - 45
@pedy19 ..This is becoming very redundant, becuz despite all the facts: Judging a person by thier apex, over thier modal(chest) speaking voice is erroneous!! Bc that's where the voice sits. ALL singers can manipulate, and sing in diffrent ranges to a degree, it's when ur not TRYING to, u hear the true essence!!. And 4 the last time, Mariah: ' I'd descibe myself as an alto with a 5 octave range, the lower notes have always been easier than the high Guess you know her voice better than her, huh?
@pedy19 Yep, BARITONE!! Hitting, let alone speaking E2-B2 is not natural for a woman, AT ALL!! What planet are u from, some men can't go that low! Also, imo she has the lowest range of a woman, I've EVER heard. Again, I thinking your mistaking a dark, husky timbre for for a low pitch ex Toni Braxton, and Brandy. Who's voice is lower? Answer: Brandy, 4 despite the fact that her timbre is light, airy, almost paper thin in comparison, her low notes>>>> Toni's despite how it sounds!! Cont...
@Thkmra No she doesn´t speak in the second octave, she hits notes in the second octave, that´s pretty different, she speaks in the third octave. Her comfort zone sits in her medium zone because that´s where her voice is richer in texture, the color of her voice is definitely dark. Well I am a lamb, have all her cds, have watched almost every videos of her singing live in youtube so i can judge her voice, plus almost everyone considers her a soprano not an alto. Sugar search for yourself
@pedy19 'young' voice that hasn't properly matured is able to accommodate over-extention. As time wears on, the cords harden, grow, and rest in place, & it's not able to as much. The case with Mariah..I'd even put Whitney in that category as being a 'natural alto', who exhibited a higher 'Sprinto' sound very early on. Ex 12 year old boy, able to sing 1st tenor..puberty strikes, now he's Baritone. Was he a 'real tenor? No, he simply needed time to grow into his true voice(sound)
@pedy19 No, mostly ALL agree with me. Google Mariah Alto. Besides, I was a 'fan' even b4 'lambs' existed(would bet Lot older than u) and remember her when she first came out around 1990. Even as a child I took note of how abnormally low it was .& I have followed her vocal transformation to her present day decline. Clearly her voice has changed; the texture, tone, it was coarsened up in a major way!! I mean, that isn't even arguable!! So what is it, abuse, damage? YES, and no..A cont
@Thkmra No most say she is a soprano, if you read articles in which her voice is considered such as rolling stones and music magazines she is always described as soprano. Plus her tessitura is of soprano. Compare some mezzo-soprano voices to hers, for instance Alicia Keys or even Jennifer Hudson or even the youtube superstar Lisa Lavie and you´ll see her voice is heavier then Mimi´s and they are Mezzos...I mean accept it ! check the duet Mariah had with her mum and compare their voices
@Thkmra pite the fact of Patricia being an operatic mezzo, you can try to compare the weight on her voice. And you are right about some mezzos being able to hit soprano notes as does (Cecilia Bartoli for instance) the difference is SINGING IN THAT TESSITURA and Mimi sings mostly in soprano tessitura no one would be able to do it unless they are sopranos, or assolutas (in case they can sing in two or more registers)
@Thkmra LOL, you're such an idiotic stan. Copying off shit from Google ain't gonna cover your non-existent understanding over vocal pedagogy. Sit down.
@pedy19 Trust me, Mariah's lower range is anything BUT unresonant; actually Looses a bit as she goes up. Also u say you've heard her speaking voice...Well she hits bariton F2, and G2 sometimes....her low notes WOULD be heard , microphone, or not! Can't say that I don't under stand where ur coming from, becuz 6 years ago, I too though Mariah being an alto was folly. However, subconsciously I too found it strange how low her voice was, and the fact that she'd hit low notes, and maintain them cont
@Thkmra yes I´ve watched it years ago, still she hits a C5 pretty easily and her B4 are easily achieved. Plus F5 is achievable to Operatic Contraltos but in a very mixed voice, not belting as Mariah, and never would they be able to sing E5 as Mariah does. Well Mariah hits G5 and even A5 in belting "mode" that already is soprano territory and classical sopranos hit those notes in head voice not belting, because most wouldn´t even be able to
@Stefano94x She is clearly soprano, her head voice is to high to be a mezzo. She is a very light soprano actually, some say Lyric Liggero or Colaratura Soprano
@Stefano94x wrong some are right aaliyah is soprano, yea she sing soft and uses falsetto for hersinging style, the other sopranos are christina, maybe jojo, mezzos are beyonce whitney, aretha, contraltos are mariah, brandy, toni
@shaniceslaysurfav mariah enhanced?? coming from someone whose idol loses volume in the upper-3rd octave?? lol i can't imagine how high they have to turn the volume up to make shanice's lower register audible. TRY AGAIN!
I always liked Mariah Carey's low notes the best, and i still pick Mariah. Mariah can do a whole song in that register lol (Stevie Wonder tribute). But I like Mariah's best because she actually sustains the low notes. I always choose the person who sustains the notes with vibrato no matter what register its in. And when it comes to low register notes, Mariah comes out on top. Brandy was also outstanding in this video. Aretha to me was the weakest link. Her notes were so quick and not sustained
@WhitneyElizabethH but, you don't like christina, you have like 100s of comments saying it, on one of your videos, you said "the battle of 3 vocal titans and christina"
@WhitneyElizabethH what's with the sarcasm, i'm being nice, besides, i've heard it all before, and i hate that nickname "jesustina" but i doubt you will ever use it again, considering how you feel about her
You are awesome, this video is awesome. FOr me me perfernce wise I'd go with Mariah all day anyday just because she can still sound super beautiful when she take it low, I love the breathy quality she adds to it as well, love the power and richness. Then Aaliyah. But Technique wise it's Aretha, Toni, and then Mariah. Great video!!
@BZBlaner "Christina: Lower register is a myth" hahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahah that is hilarious. You always have me dyin with your comments!
@MimiDahhling30 First and foremost, I must say that your videos are so well put together! You definitely have a new subscriber in me. I'll say that I've always thought that Toni Braxton produces some of the most beautiful notes in her lower chest register. There's so much resonance and clarity. Anything that comes out of Whitney's mouth is gold and MC has a good low register as well; a lot her low notes sound a little forced though. My top three are Toni, Whitney, and Mariah in that order! :)
Mariah has a better lower register. among of them she is comfortable singing in a low note 'cuz she's an alto..theres a lot of her performances/songs of her that the Low notes are much clearer and very solid to hear that you could think that its a man's voice(especially when she speaks)and lastly..
I think the best were Toni, Aretha, Beyonce and Brandy. everybody was good but I think those 4 were the best. The only ones I didnt like were Whitney's and Celine's but there not known for their lower register, they're more like "belty" singers, singers with a really strong chest voice.
it's amazing how a pop artist (Beyonce) tops the list with all of these soul singers... she's the best to me bc not only can she sing so powerfully, but she can dance her as* off too & is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! #TotalPackage
-SIGH- @ your use of almost exclusive TC lower notes from Celine...and most of those being from one song off the album. Toni cannot really be beat in the lower register. Whitney is incredible,
Anyone can link me to Aretha and Bee's lowest notes?
@elrynx2 What Celine songs include better low notes in your opinion ? I would like to see J'Attendais, S'il Suffisait D'aimer, Je Crois Toi, Tu Nages, Papillon or L'amour Existe Encore here... They are so overlooked.
@MimiDahhling30 Are you going to make a live version? I think that would showcase their "ease and control in the lower register" much better than the studio one.
I think Beyonce and Aretha's are the best, but that's just my opinion. I love Mariah's as well. Brandy and Toni are also AMAZING in the lower register. & Christina's is great for me as well :) Overall I think Aretha wins. By the way where's P!nk?
but mariah hit the lowest note :P so ill say mariah>aretha and toni>the rest in some order i don't really care. love the vid!!!!! :) do u use power director?
Aretha/Mariah/Toni are the best. Followed by Beyoncè/Brandy/Aalliyah. Then its Whitney. But she's better Than Celine/Christina(barley audible). Jojo seems a bit mediocre. Great Video
Christina has a B2 in "Prima Donna." My friend @CareemBrownMusic can confirm that. Anyway the best were Toni, Brandy, Christina (I love her light, almost haunting lower register), Mariah, Aretha is a beast, but I prefer her live low notes these are great too thou. Beyonce's lower register is excellent. Jojo's lower register is exceptional too. /.\ (Aaliyah) is the Queen!. Aaliyah & Brandy are 1st, then Toni & the rest.
A COUPLE OF THESE WOMEN'S LOWER REGISTERS ARE HIGHLY OVERRATED AND IMO COULD AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH OTHERS WHOSE LOWER REGISTERS ARE WAY MORE STRONGER
Mariah would be #1

Aretha is the queen so there's no need to say anything about her voice. She is the vocal standard for ALL female singers!
Whitney has a nice tone but she's out of her element far as lower register is concerned.
Celine can sing but she's alot better far as belting.

ok for real tho this is really actually pretty easy. it goes in order:
1: mariah, no singer period has range like her from low to high. she wins, get over it.
2: toni, shes know for her lower register and does it effortlessly
3: brandy her tone is perfect for her lower range wich makes it even better.
4: beyonce. that descending run she does in dance for you seals the deal
5: christina. her lower register is actually better than her upper. more controll and support

@hello07601 TBH since I went away and researched vocal types and other women, shes not a contralto
1. tessitura mezzo/soprano
2. BRIGHT/light/femine voice - not dark/heavy/manly
3.Great upper belts - nodules that allow her to access the 'whistle register' creat inconsistancy after superb 8 years of use
4.great&extended lower register BUT only register she doesnt sing 'healthy' in.
5.Coloratura abilities - yes contraltos can have these abilities but not at the rate & speed of a soprano

@Thkmra But since there's no truth in your post... Kindly sit down.
Stefano94x 2 months ago
@Stefano94x I have NO problem sitting, sitting he truth that Mariah is 100% alto, and despite her 'whilstle-ability', her voice, and tonal qualities extremely low!!! I knew from the very start....but don't take my word for it, ask her yourself, she has ALWAYS maintained what her vocal type is, where her register normally falls. She's CONTRALTO!! This debate has been settled years ago, ur late!! Do some research before you try to pop off at the mouth!! God day 2 u!!-)
Thkmra 2 months ago
@Thkmra Idiot, she sounds nothing like a true contralto. Her tessitura is nowhere near contralto. A contralto could SING 5th octave notes, but not with that type of comfort. Her tessitura itself is soprano. You know nothing about singing, you are just copying-off shit, hence why you are not in the position to get arrogant. Stay in your comfort zone.
No matter if you capitalize your shit, you are still wrong. Chill out.
Stefano94x 2 months ago
@Stefano94x ok she can sing soprano but she consider herself alto ok yea she can high soprano it doesnt matter we say if she consider herself alto then let it be these artist had vocal training im sure they know their voices more than we do
tazzy198525 1 month ago
@tazzy198525 Aaliyah's tessitura is not soprano at all. Same goes for Mariah being a "contralto". These women have just massive ranges, which is why Aaliyah can sing high and Mariah can sing low. But vocal range has little to do with your vocal type.
Mariah's tessitura is pretty much soprano, and Aaliyah's is pretty much mezzo.
Christina isn't a soprano either. Even with her bad technique, she would have much more ease on notes as low as B4...
Stefano94x 1 month ago
@Stefano94x oh my gosh if they say what they are dont try to tell them what they are thats not right they had vocal training im sure they know what they are like i said aaliyah said shes a soprano im not talking about the ranges and plus u going by her singing style which is very soft with falsetto thats her ''STYLE'' mariah carey even said herself shes natural alto her voice os raspy christina is soprano just because someone can sing low doesnt make u alto or singing high make u a soprano
tazzy198525 4 weeks ago
@Thkmra
True conntraltos have a manly chest voice, for example Annie Lennox or Cher.
primohomme 2 months ago
@primohomme But even a light contralto wouldn't be able to sing in a high tessitura quite like Mariah does...
Stefano94x 2 months ago
@Thkmra No Mariah is a soprano friend, she said it once in a tv show that she was "more of an alto because despite the fact of my head voice being high it is very airy" that´s why she said it :)
pedy19 1 month ago
@pedy19 Um....NO!! No offense, but is this even subjectt for debate any longer? she's stating MANY times over(*I'll provide links) that she's an Alto that happens to have flexible vocal cords enabling her to sing in the whistle register. Any trained vocalist, or ear can tell her register is VERY low, and that's where her voice fall naturally..listen to her speaking voice!! And again, this isn't even debatable, as she's officially classified as an ALTO!!
Thkmra 1 month ago
@Thkmra NO! she has been classified as soprano by music critics. Her lower notes are a bit forced and not as natural as her medium and higher parts of her voice. And no her speaking voice is low sometimes I agree on that but still there are other times where it isn´t
pedy19 1 month ago
@pedy19 This isn't going anywhere, but again, save a few ppl here, and there(u inc), Mariah s recognized as an ALTO, specificaly a Lyric contralto. Those 'critics' you've mentioned, are few and far between, and like U, are clearly confusing RANGE, for vocal tessitura, and overall texture of voice, in her case her low, and very deep. Hitting high notes does NOT=Soprano!! Save yourself the trouble and ask her yourself on twitter what her vocal type is, she'll tell you for the umptenth time!!
Thkmra 1 month ago
@Thkmra I know hitting notes doesn´t define anything, but what If I tell you that she sings comfortably in the 5th Octave as Sopranos do? her head voice is too high and light to be of contralto, also she is able to SIng in mixed voice in the 5th octave, something very few contemporary sopranos can, and her voice isn´t dark and heavy as contraltos. You clearly have never heard a true contralto sing.
pedy19 1 month ago
Thkmra 1 month ago
@Thkmra Well not belting notes in the 5th octave, but her head voice still takes her to the 5th octave quite easily and the voice types were created to define Classical singers so, in sopranos it refers to head /mix voice (mostly with head) not in belting because there is no such thing in opera. Plus Christina Aguilera is a soprano and she cant hit notes in the 5th octave without yelling that much, is she a contralto for that? NO!
pedy19 1 month ago
@Thkmra Oh and Maria Callas , who was simply the best Assoluta had only 10 fabulous years, after that her voice was gone, is she not an Assoluta for that? Don´t think so. Plus Mariah can still hit F5 and even sing E5 yes Sing them as in We Belong Together the highest part (not the belt) where she has to sing several E5s :) Oh and she has sung emotions Live 2011. Also Celine Dion can´t sing E5 as before, is she a contralto? And the answer is still NOP
pedy19 1 month ago
@pedy19 Perfect ex of Mariah displaying NATURAL range, pretty much singing the entire song on the 3rd Octave!! Specifically B2-G4..that's 2nd tenor!! Well outside of ANY soprano's control. She's not just 'touching' a few of those notes, she's HITTING them throughtout the entire song, with ease, and effortlessly . You see how bright, supple, and rich her lower register actually is? That's where her voice naturally falls. Striking diffrence in the amount of effort she executes from high belting!!
Thkmra 1 month ago
@ThkmraShe can, but rarely does. & E5, and F5, aren't outside of an Alto's range, to say so would be ridiculous! Typically pure 'sopranic' range is G5 & upwards, w/o losing power, texture, strength, and tone. Singing below C4 is not outside of a sopranos' range either. But that occurs less frequently. Comfort & ability to hold the notes is key also in accessing if its apart of one's range, not just 'touched'. To further my point on Mariah see her tribte to Stevie wonder of 'U and I'!!
Thkmra 1 month ago

Thkmra 1 month ago
@Thkmra Are u mad?! baritone ?! LOL she speaks in the 3rd octave and sometimes hits notes in the 2nd octave on purporse. I have created my ytoutube account in 2007 and I also thought she was a contralto, then after searching a lot and reading a lot as well as watching classical videos, i realize she is clearly not one. And no as you go older your voice gets heavier, it gains weight. In women it usually happens in the 40 - 45
pedy19 1 month ago
@pedy19 ..This is becoming very redundant, becuz despite all the facts: Judging a person by thier apex, over thier modal(chest) speaking voice is erroneous!! Bc that's where the voice sits. ALL singers can manipulate, and sing in diffrent ranges to a degree, it's when ur not TRYING to, u hear the true essence!!. And 4 the last time, Mariah: ' I'd descibe myself as an alto with a 5 octave range, the lower notes have always been easier than the high Guess you know her voice better than her, huh?
Thkmra 1 month ago
Cont...
Thkmra 1 month ago
@Thkmra No she doesn´t speak in the second octave, she hits notes in the second octave, that´s pretty different, she speaks in the third octave. Her comfort zone sits in her medium zone because that´s where her voice is richer in texture, the color of her voice is definitely dark. Well I am a lamb, have all her cds, have watched almost every videos of her singing live in youtube so i can judge her voice, plus almost everyone considers her a soprano not an alto. Sugar search for yourself
pedy19 1 month ago
@pedy19 'young' voice that hasn't properly matured is able to accommodate over-extention. As time wears on, the cords harden, grow, and rest in place, & it's not able to as much. The case with Mariah..I'd even put Whitney in that category as being a 'natural alto', who exhibited a higher 'Sprinto' sound very early on. Ex 12 year old boy, able to sing 1st tenor..puberty strikes, now he's Baritone. Was he a 'real tenor? No, he simply needed time to grow into his true voice(sound)
Thkmra 1 month ago
@pedy19 No, mostly ALL agree with me. Google Mariah Alto. Besides, I was a 'fan' even b4 'lambs' existed(would bet Lot older than u) and remember her when she first came out around 1990. Even as a child I took note of how abnormally low it was .& I have followed her vocal transformation to her present day decline. Clearly her voice has changed; the texture, tone, it was coarsened up in a major way!! I mean, that isn't even arguable!! So what is it, abuse, damage? YES, and no..A cont
Thkmra 1 month ago

And you are right about some mezzos being able to hit soprano notes as does (Cecilia Bartoli for instance) the difference is SINGING IN THAT TESSITURA and Mimi sings mostly in soprano tessitura no one would be able to do it unless they are sopranos, or assolutas (in case they can sing in two or more registers)
pedy19 1 month ago

Thkmra 1 month ago
@Thkmra yes I´ve watched it years ago, still she hits a C5 pretty easily and her B4 are easily achieved. Plus F5 is achievable to Operatic Contraltos but in a very mixed voice, not belting as Mariah, and never would they be able to sing E5 as Mariah does. Well Mariah hits G5 and even A5 in belting "mode" that already is soprano territory and classical sopranos hit those notes in head voice not belting, because most wouldn´t even be able to
pedy19 1 month ago
@Stefano94x She is clearly soprano, her head voice is to high to be a mezzo. She is a very light soprano actually, some say Lyric Liggero or Colaratura Soprano
