" Spending time in the gym like the young players do won't make you successful " that's a statement I think young players spend too much time in the gym is an opinion
if foden had just thrown a fend with his right arm and placed it on patterson's shoulder as he was coming in then he would not have been brought down. I do that all the time so imo that's a poor finish for an international. Not taking anything away from patterson - EXCELLENT TACKLE..
@91truffles thats true but the england team now are much bigger than 2003 , but I'd bet my bottom dollar the 03 would destroy the team now , wilkinson was faster and smarter than flood is now ,johnson would run palmer off the pitch and he was far from physical perfection and don't forget Robinson the smallest player in that team was not the biggest strongest player was by far the best player to grace the english team. All those players started playing in the 90's and were not gym freaks
2011 was an off year for sure... Scotland should have won more games in the 2010 6N they played really well then especially against wales and ireland (witch they won) but still come up short most of the time... they need to sort things out and play consistently
Chris Paterson, what a legend of rugby. Spending time in the gym like the young players do won't make you successful. He's a perfect example of the old generation of rugby players. Emphasis is more on skills, pace and fitness rather than trying to fill out a tight shirt by spending hours on end in the gym.
@dougstiro yeah, you're right. Which is why i think he's done so well playing rugby for so long, and being at the highest level, because he concentrates more on skills, kicking, rather than how much he can bench press or squat. Take someone like Banahan for example. He's as big as the forwards, and probably the biggest back when he's on the field, but I'd rather have 1 Chris Paterson in my team than 10 Matt Banahans. Size isn't everything in rugby, but a lot of people think it is, sadly.
@fazer990 Dude, spending time in the gym is hugely beneficial. I think you'll find Paterson spends a lot of time in the gym. You can't make it in the modern day without gym work. The game is so much more athletic that it used to be.
@91truffles yeah i understand that. but the gym isn't the be all and end all. being able to bench press a lot doesn't make a good rugby player. I do understand your point, that weights and conditioning is beneficial, but i do believe that rugby was better back in the 70's, 80's and 90's where it was more about playing rather than bulking up. To me, it is much more entertaining to see a man run into space and weave through a defence rather then try and smash his way through the line.
@fazer990 In entertainment terms then yes, it may have been a better game, but in terms of standard of Rugby, then no. Any of those 70s, 80s or 90s England teams would lose to the current England team significantly.
I agree that running spaces better than running at faces. I also agree that the gym is no way the be all and end all. But it does help, not just help with strength, but also with power, speed, acceleration, agility and flexibility. All key skills needed to weave through defences.
what? I would bet both of my kidneys that Paterson spends as much time in the gym as anyone else, it's absolutely vital in professional sport. You can take examples like Patterson and shane williams and say 'see being big doesn't mean alot', but they are exceptions, and rely hugely on talent. The best players in the world are very big men, that's just the way it is.
@Unevaluated I strongly disagree that the bet players in the world are 'very big men'. Thats a very narrow minded thing to say. You just mentioned Shane Williams, who's very small but was one of the worlds best players. Will Genia, Brian O'Driscoll, Keven Mealamu, to name but a few are nowhere near as big as other players in their position, but remain one of the world's best. Granted, size does help, but nothing compensates for talent or skill.
@fazer990 today's players are just as skilled fast and fit if not more....put on your glasses grandpa and pay attention because you are clearly dillusional
@MoniveaRFC ok, sorry rugby expert. perhaps i should think twice about posting my OPINION, when we have people who know the ins and outs of rugby like yourself.
@SoolieProductions buhahaah yea ryt.remains to be seen, that shitty team wudnt match the bulls on any grey day.a whole 90 mins just two tries, u gotta be kidding me..bulls got terrifying backs and very steady forwards.their pack strength can match up to any intl t5eam, their backs r creme de la creme of intl rugby.
@madscientistify no dont try and make a joke to be funny. they are the 3rd best team after nz ans SA. stop trying to be funny, we proved it last year in the internationals and are proving it now in the six nations
@madscientistify ok then whatever not everyones consistent and argentina arent a bad side on a good day. tbh it doesnt really matter and rugbys unpredictable, e.g. italy just beat france. btw where are you from? because if your from nz then you should be quiet because your shit in the world cup and if your SA then never speak again because you lost to scotland
@gaz1895 yes but who cares. everyone knows they are the 3rd best team in the world. normally i would agree with world rankings but england are definately better than ireland even though i know they play badly against them in the six nations and they are better than australia so if your going to tell me about the world rankings atleast think about it before you do because everyone knows england are better than ireland and aus
in ur opinion England are way better, but all Ireland should have beeten France and were cheated out of a win against Wales these being the two games they lost in the 6 nations. They ended up thumping England so i dont think ur argument is as clear cut as u make it.
@gaz1895 yes i agree it was ridiculous how they lost to wales and france wasnt exactly clear cut like you say my arguement is. but dont forget i could say fair enough about wales and france but you should have lost to italy. true they battered england but i dont think england will play that bad for a good few years now. it was one of the worst performances ive ever seen by any team
its these type of plays in rugby that is killing the game, less thn 3 tries the whole game.man norther hemisphere teams suck.i'd rather snuggle up to the super 14, or provincial SA games than get stuck wth ths pieces of shyt guys call rugby games hea.
Actually It was right! Maybe you should have another read of it!
I don't know what "in 4 games" means where you come from, but where I come from it means what it says!
Congratulations though on missing out on the wooden spoon, over 5 games, by points difference alone! Almost too impressive for words! You can see which way the wind is blowing for Italy and Scotland, right? Next year will be a very interesting competition for you!
@PBSmithy Yes and maybe England won't choke next time when it really matters? Scotland played well during this 6 nations with the exception of the Wales game. Similar to your beloved England agianst Ireland.. Rugby is a very unprediatable sport and Scotland could have won this game as well as their game against Ireland.
Yeah, I thought he'd look quicker. A little skip or clever grubber through would have been good. Easy to say sat at a keyboard though. Slightly different with 80k plus people and the world watching you I guess but it'll all come with experience.
