It's a Tool Assisted Speedrun.

It's made using an emulator, with constant saving and reloading as it records the movements you get down after you're happy with the eventual actions you've re-recorded. Sometimes slowdown is used also, to achieve a frame-by-frame recording of the perfect run.

It's very much possible. I have a friend (Kevin...can I mention his last name and still keep the post) who can do exactly this on the old NES cartidge platform except the "dark" levels (the levels where, to pick a level, you have to navagate in the dark), and he sometimes has trouble with the level with the floating ships.

Actually, Brockwarren, I had this game before. And whenever I blew on a whistle twice from grass land (land 1), (as long as I didn't go into land 2, 3 or 4 (desert, water, or giant land respectively) before blowing the second whistle, I would be taken directly to the access for the pipe to world 8 (dark land), skipping world 5, 6, and 7 (sky, ice, and pipe land, respectively).

reasons why this may be a fake: throwing a fireball at a boss does not damage it, using the warp flute twice in a row will not take you to the 8th world, some of the jumping seemed slightly off. but it is so possible to be good at mario that you can do this... not that i would know lol.

he had save states every couple of seconds actually, and he played it at something like 1/8th speed. he wasn't trying to make anyone believe he did that all in one run, he was just trying to do show how fast it can be done.

Well, technically it's not fake. It was obviously recorded with an emulator, so it's not really the TRUE SMB3.

But any modern emulator has a save state system while recording. He probably just saved before each level, that way, in case something goes wrong, he just has to load, and replay that level.

You don't notice it on-screen, because the save states are very hard to detect while recording roms. Go try it yourself, and see!

It would take a lot of video editing skill to play this on a slowed-down emulator, then speed up the video and sync up all the sound effects. Not to mention the guy obviously knows exactly where to jump in many of the scenes, for instace the jet level in dark world, and all the points during which he's racking up the 1ups. I believe this was done by skill.

My only question is how did he manage to get so lucky as to go by all the hands on the bridge. That is rather suspicious.
