if its under a year old yes..they should..if not just buy a new one...its only 75 bucks for a new one..dont know how they are built now..if you'd run into the same problem
I first bought this partciular model in August of 2011. It's now February 2012 and I just ordered my 4th replacement under warranty. I've asked for Amazon to call me back as to why this partcular model is defective, but they have not responded. Their response to replace the defective unit is awesome, but the defect/nuisance continues. I'm wondering if a lawsuit has been launched on Amazon to extend beyond the 1 year warranty or to finally announce an overal recall.
This happened to me last night (2 Feb) - Kindle unit was a Xmas present so is about 5-6 weeks old (and wasn't even set up for first 3 of those as I was away on holiday). SO, unit has failed for no apparent reason after 3 weeks.
I have had the same problem - twice. Amazon replaced the first Kindle but now it has happened again, I'm waiting to see what they have to say. I too, have not dropped or damaged it in any way, so am pretty annoyed at this as it is a bit of a hassle returning the damaged item and having to re-load books and publications. There is obviously a definite fault which needs to be sorted!
Has anyone else had a problem where when you flip onto the next page, then go back, it occasionally shows two strange looking bar codes and a message saying to return to home to continue? It's getting really annoying. Is it a rendering glitch?
that happened to mine well after a year of having it (past warranty) and they gave me almost half off a replacement and an extra warranty. i was bummed, but thats some great costumer service.
Mine is about a year and a half old and I experienced the exact same thing. If this is a known product defect, will Amazon replace this even if it's past the warranty period?
@cebukid70 My wife's kindle keyboard just had this issue. After talking to 3 different people there is nothing they are offering because I am a couple weeks outside the warranty period. They want me to pay a service fee of 65 dollars and pay the shipping as well. Totaling almost the cost of a new kindle. Safe to say I'm dissatisfied with amazon.
@unclewaltsoup Did you have the Kindle in the leather case that Amazon sells? I had problems with the plastic casing around the screen in that small cracks developed. At first they said that it would cost me to get it replaced since I was 10 days out of warranty, but after I told them I've always got it in my leather case, they sent me out a new one.
Not that I'm saying the fault in your case would have been prevented by using the case, but it's worth a shot asking them.
@unclewaltsoup I was luckier than you. I went through the website and reported the problem, and then had a customer service rep contact me. Because I am outside the warranty period, they offered a 3rd generation Kindle @ $40, as long as I return the defective unit. Also, they are paying for the shipping. AMAZON IS GREAT, and they were very fair about it.
I have same problem, to. I contact amazon.co.uk for that problem. My warranty is pass with in 3 weeks. If the screen is fail by the hidden defect or something like that , why don´t replace the screen ? The aspected life for that type of screen it arround 50000 hour of using, that meen more then 5 year of usage. I think Amazon would have to assume responsibility for the hidden manufacturing defect.
Thank you, I freaked out cause my Granny let me borrow hers and I woke up to the screen looking like yours. I hope Amazon does replace it beacuse I dont have the $200 for a new one.
My 13 year old son used my kindle last night. This morning the screen is like yours. He didn't drop it or have magnets near it. I'm glad I found this video. He was feeling pretty bad about the kindle being broken.
My 3rd Kindle now. My 2nd Kindle lasted just 3 months before the screen became permanently partially frozen again. What they need to do is fix this technology defect and release a new version which works, then do a recall/replacement for free.
I had my screen broken (my fault). I called customer care, said that screen is damaged and they replaced it for free. I even did not return the broken one. I got the brand new Kindle few days ago at zero cost:) That's why Amazon is so great in customer service!!!
@vomitum i would make sure you do not have to return the broken one! i am getting a replacement but they told me if i do not send back the broken kindle within 30 days i will be charged the full cost of the replacement.
Mine is the same, how do i get in touch with amazon???, will they charge me? it is fairly new and mine wasnt dropped, its been well looked after as i love it, or shud i say i did love it until now
OH KNOWS my Kindle!!!!!!!!!! It looks like Von Helton got a hold of it! More lines than a coke addict! Luckily I will send this sucker to rehab and get a replacement. It bit the bullet 2 weeks prior to the 1 year warranty expiring!
Honestly-Amazon Kindle it`s a great book reader with very very bad screen. My first AK was 30 days old before that happen. I didn't use it for 3 days-3 days on the table made my screen frozen-reasonable? All right, I`ve got replacement of course and my second AK was 7 days old before that happen again. On Sunday evening i tried to finish my book and I`ve found frozen screen only(on the morning all was right).
Amazon Call Centre made promise to my they will send my money back in 5 days because I said I don`t trust that toy anymore. After 1 month they gave me a call they can`t pay back because I didn't buy it on Amazon web site-before told me that is not a problem..so I`ve got replacement again..and
Today 22/08/11 my 10 days old 3`rth AK gone to the hell on London Airport-frozen screen-of course.
I didn`t finish my book I was very frustrated because of that.
I feel cheated because no one told my it`s just a sensitive bedroom reader. Don`t ever try take it out of your home. Small shake in tour bag, Sunday sun ray or whatever stupid can destroy your screen for good. I don`t trust them anymore. I warning U!. AK it`s a great idea only.
I received my kindle a few months ago from a friend. They bought the new kindle and let me have their old one..very nice friend..anyways
My kindle has not been used much. I have only one book on it and read it only a few times before getting caught up in another book...
my kindle has sat on my desk for maybe 2 weeks now and today i bought a case to put on it so that i could carry it in my backpack...the screen looks like the one above..what can i do? nothing? repair it? anything?
i had the same thing after only having my kindle for a couple of months - not as bad as this guy's but still blocked out the middle of the page - i phoned amazon and they agreed to send a new one out free of charge so im guessing it's a common problem as i didn't have to argue much! anyone who has a screen problem should call them straight away - it's under warranty for the first year anyway
I have had 3 Kindles in the last 7 weeks - every one had had this problem! The first was good for 2 weeks; amazon sent a replacement and that one worked for 4 days and had same problem; amazon sent another replacement and that one lasted 3 days. I was so careful with the last one - I only used it at home; I did not carry it any where, I left it on my nightstand for reading. I plugged it in yesterday for recharging, and when I turned it on (about 3 hours later) it was all messed up again!
Same thing has just happened to me. Got to say although it is shocking that this is happening so regularly, Amazon have been excellent. They called me and I will receive a new one next delivery! Can't complain at that
My kindle just did that to me today. I hadn't touched it in about a week and a half and I picked it up today and the screens all messed up. I've had mine for about seven months and I didn't drop it.
Had the same problem, my kindle lasted six months. I took care of my kindle as a jewel keeping it in a special designed leather case and then all inside a notebook sleeve along with the battery charger . No exposure altogether. Today I turned it on to read in the subway and got the crappy screen, it keeps on even wih full battery and repeated resets. Unfortunately as I live in Latin America, no way to get a replacement. (manugw@gmail.com)
@manugwtube i had the same problem one night i was reading it then i fell asleep and i must have kicked it off my bed then the next morning my three year old niece ran to my bed and stepped on it.
I can't take it anymore. This is the second Kindle screen that crapped out I have a huge amount of money invested in kindle books.I don't want another.
but my cracks are more cool. its diagonal , so that the top half of the screen somewhat resembles of the guillotine blade. but its kinda annoying that the bottome half is still visible and it says "Slide and release the power switch to wake". and only the bottom half awakes..
Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. They sent me a replacement and it just happened to me again. Still under warranty so they are sending me another replacement. I love my kindle...but am worried about the next one they send.
Mine was like that when I turned it on tonight. The image was perfect. It has been sitting in its own mini laptop sleeve. Just as he said. No pressure from anything. I took it to work a couple times. It has just been sitting. Arg!
its a cracked screen. i just replaced my wife's today. its a flaw in the manufacturing, its just super sensitive to pressure and temp. i suggest the official case for it. mine has gone through hell and back with it (im talking kids).
Mine was perfectly fine then plugged it in to charged and walked back up to it and the screen was all messed up and I tried hard reseting rotating screen turining on and off but it's still messed up I also have the 3G version
I have had mine replaced once already for the same thing. Now my second one is doing the same thing. They are sending me another replacement. It is obvious their e-ink technology is defective . I will never buy another one.
amazon will make good on it..they will send out a replacement ......keep credit card on file..you place yours back in box they send you..they also send you a pre paid label..return it thru UPS.
Woke up this morning to find mine was exactly like the one described in the video. Up 'til now I had been very happy with this advice. What happens when you report this to Amazon?
itll happen again....on 4th or 5th, lost track consiering they break every week. amazon claimed (last time i called them) that my case was the problem. got a new kindle & case (basically free of charge, i give amazon credit 4 that)....but the new case didn't make a differance. they still break, thinking of trying to return the kindle, mabie get a nook, or, more likely go back to books. mainly because books dont BREAK EVERY WEEK, FREEZE, CRASH,LOUSE BATTRY LIKE THE KINDLE.
Amazon is very good at replacing these, which is indicative that this is a common problem. I just had a kindle replaced a week ago, and now my NEW kindle is doing that too. The screen is an E-Ink screen, which is very sensitive to any pressure, and will break, like yours, if the ink matrix is damaged at all.I would say get a Sony Nook, and a screen protector, amazon tried to make these too thin, and used crappy plastic.
My kindle only got delivered about 3 hours ago and it now looks exactly like yours. When I first put it on it looked fine. I never even got to put any books or set up the Wi-Fi, the screen just went exactly like yours. I’ve tried resetting it etc, but it’s exactly the same. I’ll have another mess about, but if it doesn’t work I don’t think I want a replacement.

What if this happens two, three, four years after purchasing a Kindle?
Will Amazon give you a new one for free?
