@openblue07 They didn't need to change the Convention. What they (and others) did was get the Moratorium, the 2 Whale Sanctuaries, and the procedures for Scientific peer review of research. All of which Japan simply ignored unless forced.

NOBODY is that dumb. I am sure you are much smarter that that as well. Japan is researching population growth age etc..for the purposes of management of commercial whaling. However there is no commercial whaling in the sanctuary. Therefore the research has no scientific purpose. Sure the data is good, but what's the point?

By saying the court got it wrong and that you know who is guilty you are suggesting that you know better.

The moratorium would have been lifted long ago if that were true. But it isn't true. Japan has a formal objection to the whale sanctuary with respect to Minke.

@archangelm08 There is nothing in this video that shows a large turn at the ady gil, and for all you know the japanese captain might have turned that way because he thought the ady gil was going fast enough that he couldn't turn left fast enough, and the better option was to turn right and hope to miss them on that side. @roliver31483 I ended up watching a clip of this video that's actually from the ady gil before the impact and it looks a lot more like the whaling ship turned at them, I just hesitate to think the japanese captain would risk the damage to his own boat but maybe I'm wrong. In any case they were someplace they didn't need to be. From what i can gather they'd been circling the japanese ship for quite some time and as they began to run low on fuel they came around in front of the whaling ship.

I saw the episode in which this happened. One has to feel a little sorry for Captain Pete - he had the boat built from scratch, and it was his entire life for four years, and it cost him a shitload. And in this one short incident, it was taken from him. And the crew came close to death themselves.

@DrVegasIII The Ady Gill's engines were not off. They were on and the drive was in neutral. A few seconds before the collision the drive was engaged and the engines throttled up. This caused the Ady Gill to move forward. The crew then placed the drive in reverse, but it was too late. However, your claim that the Ady Gill;s engines were off is false. It has been clearly stated by the SSCS the engines were on.

It's the amazing aspect of whales that's turning out to be part of their downfall (thanks to these idiot whalers). Whales are proven to have intelligence equal to that of a 7 year old human. So naturally, they're curious when they see humans and ships. The Japs take advantage of this and kill them when they approach. Personally I'm inclined to think it WAS a deliberate ramming - but there are two key points:
1> That's just my suspicion and not based on this footage.
2> It wouldn't be the first ramming in the Sea Shepherd wars. ;)
I admire Sea Shepherd. Controversy aside they stand up against commercial whaling - but they ram too - not necessarily bad, but they do.

If the Ady Gill was completely innocent they would not been found responsible. You may think you know better than the courts but that does mean you are right.

By saying the court got it wrong and that you know who is guilty you are suggesting that you know better.
To say they dont know better is to suggest there is something wrong with it but seeing the Minke is not endangered there is nothing wrong with it.

@roliver31483 I ended up watching a clip of this video that's actually from the ady gil before the impact and it looks a lot more like the whaling ship turned at them, I just hesitate to think the japanese captain would risk the damage to his own boat but maybe I'm wrong. In any case they were someplace they didn't need to be. From what i can gather they'd been circling the japanese ship for quite some time and as they began to run low on fuel they came around in front of the whaling ship.

I saw the episode in which this happened. One has to feel a little sorry for Captain Pete - he had the boat built from scratch, and it was his entire life for four years, and it cost him a shitload. And in this one short incident, it was taken from him. And the crew came close to death themselves.

Actually, in other videos you can see the Ady Gill power forward IN FRONT of the Whaler, and for those of you that say the Ady Gill is out of fuel, check how fast it reverses AFTER the impact. The International High Court has ruled this as an 'incident at sea' so no liability to either party (in other words the don't blame the Japanese). Lastly and as widely reported, the Ady Gill skipper was instructed to scuttle his own ship three days later!

What they dont show is about 10mins before this, the Ady Gil had placed a prop fouler(rope lined with lead strands) in the path of one of the Jap boats causeing damage to there propeller. Under threat of further property damage being caused by the Ady the Japs had the legal right to defend themselves from damage.

For the arguers:: Shonan and Ady are both in the wrong. Ady Gil started its engines right before the collision, but only to move their ship out of the way. You need engine power to back up, right? Right. But the Shonan didn't evade fast enough and shouldn't have even been on an intercept course with the Ady anyway!
For those of you who think the Ady rammed the Shonan: Think about it. Sea Shepherds aren't geniuses, but they aren't morons. It's suicide to ram a steel ship with a carbon one.

I've seen this filming from the Jap boat, from the Ady Gil and from the Bob Barker. In all views the Ady Gil clearly either intentionally or purposely powered up into the path of the Jap boat as indicated by the wake behind the AG just before collision. Beyond question!

@DrVegasIII The Ady Gill's engines were not off. They were on and the drive was in neutral. A few seconds before the collision the drive was engaged and the engines throttled up. This caused the Ady Gill to move forward. The crew then placed the drive in reverse, but it was too late. However, your claim that the Ady Gill;s engines were off is false. It has been clearly stated by the SSCS the engines were on.

From the angle from the other ship you can see the same thing. When the Gil is hit you can see the engines are running and it is clearly moving through the water, not just sitting. I'm all for the anti-whalers. But that does not exempt them from human error. The fact that you are so quick to jump on me shows where your head is.

Animal Planet had a camera crew on board and were filming Bethume and all his guys sitting around on the deck. The engines WERE NOT running - they were literally "adrift" waiting for the Sea Shepard to come and refuel the Ady! It mustve been the water current and the Jap ship turning into them that gave you the illusion that the Ady was moving - trust me the Ady was drifting & engine off !

It's the amazing aspect of whales that's turning out to be part of their downfall (thanks to these idiot whalers). Whales are proven to have intelligence equal to that of a 7 year old human. So naturally, they're curious when they see humans and ships. The Japs take advantage of this and kill them when they approach. This is a very interesting thing about International Law. In order for most these international governing bodies like IWC to work, it requires member nations to follow the directives on their honor. This is where the term "outlaw nation" came into being. Some nations refuse to act with honor in certain political issues.

Oddly enough, when the Japanese violate international agreements on the sanctity of the southern oceans, that's ignored. But if I put a 50 cal. hole in that vessel's hull so they had something else to worry about besides hunting whales, someone would call that an act of war or piracy. That said, I wouldn't lose any sleep if the SM sank in port and was ruined. They have to reship soon anyway.

Any person with an IQ over 50 would know the difference between turbulance from a submerged propeller, to a disturbance due to an overhead projected water source. So thanks for attempting to correct my "misapprehension", but I'll stick to the facts, not fairytales.
