  • Two words..........Rosa Simpson. Washington Dr JHS, Fayetteville, NC 1973 or whenever this came out. She had me so twisted up I'm not quite sure what year it was. And as for the 7 dislikers------they are like a school on spring break---- NO CLASS!!!!!!!!!

  • and lots more catchy

  • this is certainly better then the music of today

  • I had tinted aviator glasses too...I wasn't as cool

  • Clapton does the mini break solo....they are old freinds

  • Happy Birthday Stephen. KEOM 88.5 Fm Mesquite Schools radio plays this one allot. This song reminds me of Mesquite Texas. Hats off to KEOM and Big Jim

Thomas both "keepers of the faith".....on the best oldies music from the 70's etc.

  • Happy 60th birthday Stephen!

  • This is such a great song.

  • In what year did this song come out?

  • I always loved this song. Stephen sang for ABC records, and he was able to get his then labelmate Chaka Khan to sing back up.

  • MISS THE OLD DAYS! GREAT PICK ME UP! Check out Ebony Eyes by Bob Welch

  • This was a poorly lip-synced version. It was performed on American Bandstand.

American Bandstand and Solid Gold featured artists that had to lip synced their songs. They would only pay them about $400 for the lip-synced performance and several thousand for the live performance. Both shows bit the dust. When American Bandstand became syndicated, ABC canceled the show. Both shows were seen as phoney, animated and stupid before they were canceled.

  • @haroldb55 Accurate info, but the lip-sync was also contractual with the a & r folks from the record companies. They wanted the public to hear exactly the same song as they were selling on records, so they made them lip sync. Too bad. Well, I think you can catch a few of Stephen Bishop's live performances on The Midnite Special DVDs(and video clips found here on YouTube(like On and On).

  • The song reminds me of some difficult times in my life. But heck, I was so young everything was bitter-sweet, looking back...

Kind of like the guy said at the end in the movie "Biloxy blues" - As I look back now, a lot of years later, I realize my time in the army was the happiest time of my life. God knows not because I liked the army, and there sure was nothing to like about a war. I liked it for the most selfish reason of all: Because I was young.

  • she'll make you high like it was a joint......

  • @deathbycupid . Actually the lyric is "everybody says 'watch out boy she'll break your heart like it was a toy'"

  • @Chilly102 not in this verison

  • omg! i can visualise my dads LP(SUPERSTAR Collection) 1978/9..remember this melody used to make me wana cry....lol

  • And Eric Clapton on guitar, too (sounds like he was bending over backwards to not overshadow Bish, though. A roadie for Miley Cyrus' band could've played the solo here.) But a fun song. Always like hearing it.

  • worst lip-synching ever!!!

  • I swear I hear Chaka Khan, but can't see her on stage [;^)

  • @JamaisMEC It's a lip synch job n they're playing the original recording. It is her, though. Good ear.

  • I love you can hear the snaps and pops from the vinyl record AB was playing for him to lip sync to..

  • i heard it in fortinos and started to dance when no one was looking lol

  • @johnnykimbley LOL!

  • awesome song...what memories this generates. And all the better with Chaka Khan winding up the end.

  • Saw Stephen at BB King's tonight. He was great! Of course, he played this song -- and wasn't forced to lipsynch it this time.

  • Where's John Belushi when you need him...

  • Is Stephen as uncomfortable lip-synching this song as I am watching him lip-synch it? Too bad Dick Clark didn't allow an artist to do otherwise. Our loss.

  • @KamaKinky - Yeah, they always lip-synched on most shows w/"live" musical performances, except for the Midnight Special and maybe a coupla others.

  • Pantomined!

  • I see it my dad's 73' van in the hot So. Cal sun with this on the AM! Good times.

  • @Peterbj I remember hearing this while riding in my mom's '69 Nova. She had an AM/FM radio with one speaker in the middle of the dashboard. That was back in the days when no one wore seatbelts and you'd see people hitchhiking on practically every main road.

  • THE BANDSTAND BABY!!! YES!!

  • ...why am i oddly reminded of The Style Council hearing this???

  • @pk33617 perhaps because it sure sounds like "How She Threw It All Away." Perhaps Paul and Mick were listening to this when they wrote it ;)

  • Chaka Khan is ripping off some serious vocal licks at the end of the song. What a brilliant idea - S. Bishop invited Chaka to sing background at the end of the song (as they fade away at the ending)..."OOHHHHHhhhh! AAaaa-ooohhhhhh! I'm talkin' to YOU! aaa-oohhhhhhhhh, yeah, yeah, yeah,yeah!.......""

  • What a great song! Favorite songs that ever hit the radio waves.

  • Do any youngsters watching this vid realize how much time this guy spent with a blowdryer getting his hair to look like that? It's impossible to even imagine.

  • The Double Rainbows after the rainy day is the best part of a Rainy Day...

  • It's such a shame they lip synched so much in those days. I love how Stephen Bishop looks like an ordinary bloke and still made it in show business... try that now and you'll get laugh out of town unless you're over the top like Lady Gaga or a stupid kid named Justin Beiber. "Music" scene today makes me cringe.

    Go Stephen Bishop! Classic tune..

  • @supercooled Way too much "talent selection" these days.

  • Stephen Bishop was having an affair with Chaka Khan back in 1976.Thats how he got her to sing background vocals on his album.

  • I really don´t miss this kind of pussy music from the 70´ies, i must admit!!!

  • @BigAndTall666 Then don't search for it and listen to it..duh.

  • But not only are you watching it...but you're commenting...LOL!

    Don't feel bad...the 666 explains you!

  • great info..never knew Chakka khan was on the background vocals. Great song! timeless

  • @sw33tlilang3l7

eric clapton played lead on the record

  • Rainy days are my favorite days

  • Fabulously Awesome song.... with Chaka Kahn on the back vocals... awesome!

  • Beautiful song, singing and playing. Love it!

    Nadia

  • love this song. thats chaka chan at the end.

  • Like this video shows, this song belongs to "Careless", the extraordinary and unfogettable album from Mr. Bishop, plenty of intelligent, beautiful and sensitive ballads. A very romantic album, something hard to find nowadays...

  • dick clark was such a patronizing scheming man.

  • @RJiminez51 scheming? How so?

  • This is music!!!!

  • wow lip-synch

  • @hebrewhammer1 All those shows lip synced

  • it is a feel good tune.

  • She'll break your heart like it was a toy...

  • SB and AB, time for memory flashback, very nice

  • Hit #6 AC, #22 pop in Billboard. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg Dave, do you know what year this came out? I sure it was in the 80s, My favorite song he did was It Might Be You. What happen to the music today? I grew up in the 70s and things were so much better then, or at least I think so... I remember my first car, a 1976 Pontiac Grand Le Mans.. with a factory 8 TRACK, A BLAST FROM THE PAST.. It listed for 5900.00, I got my first job and paid my dad the car note each month a whole 100.00 bucks a month.. Thanks for sharing and God bless you

  • @1969pontiac1 I sure do, my friend. It debuted 1st on the AC chart, 12-25-76. Thanks to the Billboard Top Adult Contemporary charts book for the help. Glad to meet a fellow chart enthusiast like yourself. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg I lived through 1976 and watched this show every Saturday and probably at one point saw this exact one. I miss those wonderful days.

  • see there thats why i would love to be a singer...you get a wooden stool....WOW

  • Ed Sullivan never let his performs lip synch

  • Eric Clapton on the guitar solo, and Chaka Khan on the vocals - great track - thanks for the post!

  • so very good, a true craftsman.

  • I forgot how many good songs Steven Bishop wrote.

  • Great music. Great performance. Looking back, it seems like all the artists of that day were purely talented musicians. Much less about the superficial and a lot better quality than today.

  • @speedstack23 I'm the same age and remember those days like yesterday. A more lighthearted and carefree time.

  • Wow ...you know your old when you remember this on am radio.....and I'm just 44

  • mystery google sent me to this video when i told it i was bored. haha

  • @emmaloveshorses95 Google is very wise! They picked a good one...That's funny that it sent you to this song...

  • A brilliant song and a great singer to go with it love Shirlsxx

  • What's funny is that the guitar solo was recorded by "ERIC CLAPTON". This reminds me of the "Let's Dance" Video by David Bowie where David plays the solo that was recorded by the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.

  • I'm pretty sure that's Chaka Khan singing backup.

  • You're right.

    smokiebird06.

:)My fav song from Stephen Bishop

Chaka adds that little extra to the song.

    Thanks for posting.

  • That's Gina sitting next to Dick Clark.

  • You know he looks alittle like Eddie Rabbit. Love his music !

  • I love this song,,,,always have,,,always will...just hits the right cord for me...don't make like this anymore

  • brings back the memories....

  • I remeber watching this in fifth grade--I mean who doesn't? Love it!

  • aahhhhh! I can smell the pleather of our old family station wagon just by hearing this song! i LOVE it!

  • @dummyscotch We had the station wagon too..the Country Squire with the paneled sides. Ours had the extra seats that folded up in the back.... Kind of reminded me of the rumble seats back in the day. Gotta love the 70's and 80's. Thanks for sharing that comment, it flooded back those great memories.

  • @swimjockey OMG we had one of those too! It was pale yellow with the "wood" paneled sides. We used to love riding in the very back. We called it the woody wagon. hahahaha!!! Dad loved his Fords, for sure!

  • Great Martin guitar.

  • I joined the Columbia Record House and they sent me this album by mistake and told me to keep it... Once I opened it up and saw Chaka Khan sang on it I listened to it and this was a good 70's album.

  • I always liked Stephen Bishop. I'm a tad biased with this song because it was released the year of my birth.

  • A true artist if ever there was! This is a classic!

  • ok its opening up a whole lot of memories donald fagin eat your heart out

  • let's not forget he wrote this and so many more wonderful songs.

  • amen. i love everybody needs love.

  • It's obvious he's lip syncing...and that's Chaka Khan on background vocals.

  • Why would anyone give you a thumbs down for saying he's lip syncing. It's obvious visually and anyone who knows the record knows that it is what we were hearing, not a live performance. That does not make it bad, it just is what it is.

  • 懐かしいです。

  • Nice memories!!

  • great song. i always loved. sister doing background can sure belt out a note!!!! awesome!

  • The background singer at the end was actually Ryan Seacrest...no really it was!

  • I would feel so fricking stupid strumming that thing and moving my mouth to a recording. Absurd. And all those people clapping.

  • getting paid millions of dollars will help you feel a little bit smarter while strumming that thing....LOL.

  • It might make me feel more prosperous, but no smarter. I'm sure I'd deliberately mouth the words to "Amazing Grace" or the Oscar Meyer theme song.

  • One of the best.

  • Chaka Khan? Well, where is she? You mean he was lip synching on American Bandstand?

  • Stephen Bishop wrote and sung this,Eric Clapton played the Guitar solo and Chaka Kkan sung the backup vocals.Great tune!

  • Eric Clapton???? Yeah right..I guess that was Jon Bonham on drums too huh???

  • You are precisely correct.

  • and when I hold her in my arms

I never know what to do

  • i really liked this song...i am passing it on...

  • We love ya cuz'! Aunt Shirley says hi!

  • Love Love Love...This Song!

  • he made that acoustic guitar sound like an electric guitar on the guitar solo. he is good

  • Ha,ha. He sure did. I love the effect he used on that acoustic.

  • its amazing its raining where i am at.

  • great song, great 8th grade memories!

  • @seventiesguru agreed great 8th grade memories. Back then I had a habit of taking a nap after school with my stereo on and fell asleep to countless songs ranging from Disco, Adult Contemporary, Top 40, AOR etc whatever station I happened to have on. This was one of those songs I fell asleep to. It was sunny and 75 that day though. I also fell asleep to Slow Ride. After that year I didn't nap as often then in adulthood after work picked up napping again.

  • in case yawl did not know, that incredible female voice on the outro of this song is a baby (early 20's) Chaka Khan.

  • And the guitar solo is done by Eric Clapton, as well.

  • Long live " The Bish " going to see him at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool U.K. this friday 30.05.2008. Cant wait !!!

  • Good song-

    Thanks!!

  • it's just really nice to see that David Koresh is still alive, playing music, leading cults, etc...

  • do you have the interview and him singing On and On from this same show?

  • i,d like to see that too.

  • feel good music

  • This guy always made me stop crying when I was a baby. All dad had to do was turn on the player and when Stephen started singing, I would quiet down. This guy is awesome!

  • I've seen this guy perform three times now and the guy never fails to give a great performace. He still sounds as good as ever. Keep going Stevie

  • When we get you Stephen' we're going to smack you off something, because we're just that desperate''

  • Hoohohooohooohoooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Omg I pooped myself. New Water New Water New Water

  • LOL STEVEN STOP PLAYING SO HARRRRDDD. Yeah. You.

  • They didn't need electrical shit they knew how to make good tunes with the sounds they have. The basics. That's great enough

  • I know he didnt try to make that guitar sound like an electric guitar. come on man it sounded good though

  • That faboulus voice singing backup is Chaka Kahn!

  • YES YES YES. I am so glad someone noticed and posted. On that album she also did a duet w/ him called little italy. great song.

  • i love you stephen!

  • I was out to dinner tonight with my boyfriend and heard this song, so I had to come to youtube and see if it was posted. great memories :)

  • Whoops, meant upload a video of this!!

  • Yep, so good to see and hear Stephen Bishop after all these years. Anyone got 'little italy' they could post up? (fact that my name is Rosie has nothing to do with it...)

  • Yes Eric Did. Thanks for posting. I hope DC doesn't take this one down.

  • I miss American Bandstand! I think it's the music I miss the most. Another great song from the 70's!

  • Great tune....on of my favorites by Stephen..the incomparable Chaka Khan is on background vocals

  • hey you can do just about anything on a good Martin... Boy did Dick Clark look great.. (was that last year) lolol Sonny, Penn Hills, PA...

  • @1:50..Hilarius when Stephen rocks out on his acoustic guitar but you hear a Fender Strat..And where did Chacka Khan's voice come from @ 2:27?

    Lipsync anyone?

    Thanks for posting, though..Memories

  • Thanks for uploading, great memories!

  • She'll beak yo heart likea Quisa toy.............oh My

  • Do you mean, "She'll break your heart like it was a toy"?

  • Gonza this is superb!Incredible stuff,I have a few videos that you might like from the 1970's.

  • i heard this song played in a local shoneys so i decided to look it up on youtube and i found it and of course, its thundering outside

  • Be sure to check out him on the solo. That isn't an electric guitar, but he went for it anyway. Awesome

  • Eric Clapton played the solo in the album.

  • great talent...better than any songwriter in today's scene.

  • My favorite song!! Thanks for posting this!

  • That would be none other than my favorite singer....

    Chaka Khan!!!

  • Does anyone have the chords for this song? I want to play it on my ukulele!

  • Maybe my favorite Bish tune just behind "It Might Be You", and "On & On"

  • exactly

  • Takes me back to my high school days.

  • Lovely! One of Bish´s best songs. Still one of the best songwriter/singers of all times.

  • Love it!!! and the A.B. lip sync

  • *Gonza~ Thank U so Much For having This Available!

U Have Very Good Taste! This song has alot of Memories Great Ones. No One Has This one up! Happy U Do! :)

  • Man's a genius...just wish he would perform in England

  • it brought memories of my youth. great video. susana.

  • yes it's chaka and clapton on electric guitars!

  • Thnx for Stephen Bishop. Still one of the best singer-songwriters.

  • is that Chaka Kkan singing the backround vocals?

  • Yes...truly a spectacular voice she has.

  • he was cool. seems like he stopped writing good songs; just performing his old hits.

  • what a great song...been waiting for someone to upload this! thanks

  • More people will find this video if you upload it as Stephen Bishop...

I love how he does a wah-wah guitar lead on his acoustic guitar :)
