Someone who pawns an item has upto 6 months (in my shop) to redeem the item, each month 8% interest (in my shop) goes on to the amount borrowed. Selling, you sell me an item it's mine and not yours anymore.

@Buckleofbelt Basically, a pawn works like this. Let's assume you really need money to pay off a bill, but at the moment you are financially unable to. You want the money to pay off the bill, but you don't want to give anything away necessarily. So rather than sell an old item laying around the house, you choose to pawn it. By pawning it they'll make an offer to you, you'd accept it, and get the money right away. Eventually you'd pay them back though, with 10% interest included, to get item back

you could also try your luck with a bank or loan shark but they're just as bad. fact of the matter is if you need a loan you're not going to get one without paying for the added risk.

I honestly think the expert telling the value of the item in front of the customer is a bad idea, because when they know what its worth they always have that price in their head and generally would want to keep it.

Make the customer think they're getting a good deal, when really you're getting a good deal.

Part of the reason pawn shops might charge such high interest rates is because banks and credit card companies are barred from charging high interest rates to certain customers, so instead they simply reject them, and these customers are then forced to resort to a pawnbroker.

Then again, if you have to pawn something that makes you wonder why you bought it in the first place rather than keeping the cash.

Also, you can't use personal effects as collateral on a line of credit. In these tough economic times, pawn shops make a killing, because the guy who lost a $80K a year job, didn't take care of his money and bought a Rolex, or something of high resale value, will pawn it to keep food on the table.
