With the dairy industry nearby our farm, we used to field raise the "monkey calves". Don't know where the term came from. Many that others raised were butchered a week or less after birth, common in the wild, but not in most forms of farming. I am against the cruelty of treatment, but not the practice.

If there was a charity that would pay the price to raise them, great. I have yet to see volunteers for this. They are expensive to raise, requiring more care due to their ophaning

I'm a calve breeder in Holland and get sometimes British calves. I don't like them so much because there are a lot of diseases in GB.

If we don't take your calves, the milking farmers have to kill the bull calves after the birth. So I don't understand that well why some of you are against exporting calves to Europe.

I dont know what you guys are talking about but veal is a very tasty meat, although veal has a stigma to it, I dont follow what society says is right or wrong but go with what i like, well to a certain extent. There's nothing wrong with eating veal - veal is to beef what lamb is to mutton. The reason we need to export calves to Europe (where animal welfare standards are generally lower than in the UK, which itself is by no means perfect) is there is very little demand for them in the UK due to the stigma attached to veal. Veal crates have been banned in Europe for some time. Many farmers in the UK end up just shooting male calves, which is a massive waste of life compared to killing them for meat.

Least they are very humane to these calfs, we have a calf farm near us and they are kept in a dark box till slaughter. This is the way to raise veal, very humane

being vegitarian i have to be very careful with my diet.. im aware of ingredients and nutritional value.. i do this so i can have a ballenced diet..

even if i did eat meat i don't think i would want to eat veal.. where is the nutritional value in veal?.. the animals have no excersise.. no natural diet.. they are deprived of iron.. if their meat is pale surely these animals are ill when they go to slaughter?

There are crueller farming methods than veal calf rearing - foie gras production for example. Imagine the uproar if it was cute and cuddly calves being force fed until their livers swelled to bursting, instead of ugly geese or ducks! It would be banned immediately.
