I've seen players tap, beat, blow on, twist, scratch and lots more on their guitar.

Whatever works works and my toolbox has been greatly enhanced once I started imitating really rhythmically strong players.

Give it a shot and see what comes out of your hands, fingers and arms.

You might come up with something truly unique.

Funny to see the discussions going on about the length of my nails and my nail-hygiene instead of the techniques I discuss, lol.

FYI I go to a manicurist every three weeks and get acrylic nails. These are tougher than concrete, because I have very weak nails of my own.

But you really don't need them, it just gives you a different (more aggressive) sound.

These slapping techniques are very personal and add to your rhythmic toolbox.

@teemlee51 Well, no not exactly...that's a bit excessive if you ask almost anybody...you don't need a whole 1/2 of an inch of fingernail to have that sound....i have nails, i'm a guy, but i don't have nails that look gross. It may be the way i play, i'm just able to hit the string with nothing but nail, despite having relatively short nails anyways.

It's something you'll have to experiment with. You might try picking with your nails, or get a different sound by picking with the meat of your fingers.You might even try fingerpicks, but those tend to snag on the downstroke. Nails are the best for a brighter sound, bare fingertips for a mellower sound.
