As a passion, I would buy one of these and change it to diesel myself. The huge gas engine is completely impractical and the taxes on it make you want to shoot some politicians (this is applied across Europe)...
I really like it! I would really like to have that Rolls with a diesel engine but, I would have opted for a Japanese 3 liter and above turbocharged diesel and converted it to a 5 forward on the floor manual transmission! And install a small tachometer to suit!!!!
Im currently undergoing a similar conversion, but Im using a Mercedes E300 turbo diesel from a 2000 and transplanting it into a Bentely Turbo R 1990. not an easy job at all. pure hard work, but if its sucsessful ill do more.
Nice. Funnily enough, Rolls-Royce did make diesel engines at one time for Sentinel trucks and railway locomotives (RR owned Sentinel). However I think one of those engines would be too large for a car (even one as big as the Shad.) Rolls-Royce engines also own Bergen and Crossley (although Royce cars are now owned by BMW). I quite fancy the idea of a black-painted Silver Cloud with a Gardner engine in it (black cloud? Anyone? Never mind...)
what a wonderful idea! What size and make is the diesel engine in this? The plugs seemed to take a long time to warm up though. Its the only way i would ever buy a classic like this as i just adore the economy of diesel. I even think the sound is more masculine which i prefer. Its raises my testosterone to hear my car as an oil burner
That "Obnoxious" diesel would give the car some get go. And, imagine a Rolls royce that could tow a travel trailer or horse trailer. It's not shame, it's brilliant!
It'd turn the Rolls into a do everything luxury car. You'd outrace a bmw towing a trailer XD
Diesel engines over petrol anyday, and its great to see someone make an effort to keep the old girl on the road at reilistic running costs. The other outcome is the banger raceing game, thats the best fate for a petrol engined car that does 10 mpg or therabouts. Anyway it is loved and i think the owner should be proud. Topman!!!!
whooa getting a bit serious, putting oil burners in jags and rollers has been going on since the 30's. a wo bentley once got a gardner diesel shoe horned into it. in all fairness many shadows have died because nobody was willing to take on a car that did 12mpg, at least this way another shadow may get an engine to save it and someone else can use his more often.
with lpg u need to get the system certified every year or so by specialists for it to be legal plus it costs the earth to have it fitted by a specialist which is a legal requirement and lpg prices are going up too.
I prefer diesels, hate petrol thing; any damp and they wont run properly and lpg and petrol is a fire hazard.
This kind of behaviour should not be rewarded with positive comments. That's like converting a Strativari into a Eukulele. I can only hope he has kept the original engine. Maybe someone seeing this will take pity and rescue the Rolls from this savage.
A Rolls Royce engine, like most other English engine, is an antiquated, inefficient, unreliable heap better suited for the scrap heap than under the hood of a beautiful car. Diesel pwns gas 8 days a week.
i was thinking of doing the same using a 6.5 GM diesel v8 as it would just bolt onto the gearbox. what i would like to know is what was done to the front suspension to strenghten it as the gm block is cast iron, where as the rolls v8 was light alloy. any ideas fellow pertol/gear heads?
A very nice sounding diesel indeed! Is this a one-off conversion or did RR actually make diesel-engined cars? I ask because I'm having trouble finding any information at all and can only find out about the RR Eagle diesel generators
Rolls-royce most definately never made a diesel engined production car. the point with a diesel car is operating economy which is never a concern for a rolls owner.
I think-only think- that rolls took a share of perkins engines which resulted in the rolls eagle commercial engines, used in trucks/buses/generators. a good engine back in the day. The shad in the video sounds like a gmc diesel, I thought maybe a 5.7 from the sound
Beautiful car! really nice!

if i had to guess, i'd say it was a 5.7 instead of a 6.2

@127069 Is that why almost every MG, Triumph and Jaguar in America is sitting in a garage and field, not running, instead of on the road?

@SakoTGrimes That could describe any old car, most old cars from any country get scrapped. Have you been on earth long?

its a GM 6.2 from what i can see. if he had used a 6.5 out of a van he could have had a turbo..
AusDougMac 3 years ago
Some 6.2s had turbos and most of them aftermarket ones dealerships would put on.

sounds nice. i did a conversion on a rolls shadow 1, about 10 years ago. i put a 6 cylinder perkins in it, did u do the conversion.
ESY835 3 years ago
It doesn't look or sound like a Diesel Rolls Royce engine at all, it's more like a 6.2 GM diesel was dropped in to replace the original gas engine
