Holy shit - this is fucking wonderful........James and Lars are really going for it.....Man I miss seeing these guys back in the day...saw with Cliff - open for Ozzy...it was incredible....New haven CT
@yukons95 Wow!! You actually got to see Metallica back in 1986?? Now that must've been one heck of sight!! Did you see them when they still had Cliff or had Jason come along by then?? I bet youve seen alot of sh*t change (not just with Metallica but w/ our way of life in general). I was only about 8 or 9 back then so I dont remember much (or I just didnt understand it if I do remember it). Though I do remember bands like Springsteen & Bon Jovi being the flavors of the month back then. Gag me!!
@VredesStall Yes my friend! 86' Austin tx. with cliff! They could not come to San Antonio My hometown cause of ozzy pissing on our Alamo!!LOL Whom they were touring with, but lucky us during the south tour they made time to come back to S.A. a few weeks later! Still with cliff at a small auditorium! Few months later thats when they left for Europe!! Then sadness! Totally blown away at these shows! They are nowhere even close now!
@VredesStall And yes we were into speed thrash metal and all those glam bands were it back then! Playing huge venues! If you wanted this it was at small venues. Metallica came out with ozzys help playing huge venues an was like totally different! LOUD! No one ever thought this type of music would make it, thats why they are so popular they proved those glam metalist Wrong! When we got to the Erwin center in 86 we were a little late! U could here Battery Blasting from outside!
One more question: Considering that most of us here (including myself) are/were to young to see & appreciate Metallica with Cliff.... can you kind of elaborate on what it was like to actually see Cliff Burton perform live?? I mean, what was it like to actually see his live stage presence & performance. And you gotta tell us what it was like when he played his bass solos!! Anything else that you'd be willing to share about your experience with1986-era Metallica w/ Cliff is more than welcome!!
@VredesStall Like i was telling you, we filled two cars with friends took off to austin about 70 miles from s.a. we had car trouble, one overheated 10 miles before! so we just left it and piled 8 16 yr olds in a car! when we got to the erwin center they had just started. you could hear battery from outside! anyways back to Burton when we walked in side it was total darkness all you could see was hetfield an burton headbanging to the music! it looked like two mop heads!
@VredesStall Burtons sound was incredible! you could almost feel it over lars double bass! His stage presence was like no other! He was like a hippie brought to the future! His solos were also flawless! almost non human like a machine! during some solos you'd think he was playing a guitar! No one will ever replace him! i liked newstead but not even close! i think robert is the closes to anyone sounding like burton! My ears rang for days after they played at a auditorium here in s.a!
Now this was back when Metallica was still considered to be "very dangerous"... as in alot parents believing in all that Tipper Gore bullsh*t (...including my parents, embarrassingly enough) that Metallica was going to come kill their children in some weird satanic ritual. Hell, I remember some schools wouldn't allow their t-shirts to be worn as per their dress codes. Remember those days?? ;)
I didn't even become aware of their previous albums until some time later after that... and I actually had to sneak their tapes & cd's into my room to listen to them (can you believe that!!)...
I think I may have been a bit of a "late bloomer" learning about Metallica. I think I first remember learning about them around the time the "Justice" album came out (especially because of the song "One") as well as their corresponding tour t-shirts that the other kid's parents let them wear but mine didn't (I think I was about 11 or 12 at the time). At that time, and if memory serves, I think it was GunsNRoses that were at the top of the heap with their "Appetite" album.
@yukons95 That's awesome!! I wish was old enough to appreciate them then.
By the way... I grew up in south Texas, too!! (Corpus). Can you tell me how was it exactly that you first learned about/ heard Metallica & their music?? I ask because if it's one thing I remember was that you never heard Metallica's music on the radior or Mtv... so I like to ask the early fans how it was that they first learned about the band and first heard their music.
@VredesStall i love corpus christi awesome fishing! anyways back when i was in high school. alot of pepole if not most were into either rock or country! there was no hip hop or rap crap! this was like 1981, my high school had like 10 different rock bands! eveyone wanted to make a band! the high school had a talent show every year and it was like a rock fest! you maybe had like two other kind of acts, the rest were like 15 different bands from different local schools!
@yukons95 it would become more like battle of the bands! not really glam bands but bands that were into judas, ozzy, triumph etc. we actually had s.a. slayer that was suppose to be the one's who were gonna be more popular than the current slayer! at one time here at sunken gardens to two match up in 1981 and alot of people thought s.a. slayer kicked the current slayers ass! but they fell apart! we also had a drummer at our school that endend up with helstar from houston!
@yukons95 anyways back to your question. we were all into speed or thrash metal. and all you could only get that through local venues or recorded cassettes at that time! glam was taking over a friend of mine had a recorded tape of different songs and it had two songs from metallica hit the lights and jump in the fire. that was like 83' there was no airplay for not only metallica but any kind of thrash or speed metal. slowly we started hearing more metallica then kill em all came out!
@yukons95 Thats incredible!! I'd just about give anything to go back in time to see Cliff-era Metallica... especially with 1985-1986-era Samhain (ie, Glenn Danzig) opening for them... considering that Cliff was such a big fan of his music... hence his Misfits skull tattoo. Now that would have made for one hell of a show & opening band. Its a shame that Samhain never got the chance to open for Metallica... although they probably / eventually would have as I'm sure Cliff would've seen to that!!
my first `tallica concert was "monsters of Rock" basel , st. jacobsstadium 1991 ,
and they KILL everything @ these evening , i mean they where so damm perfect and the where by far the best band , till these day i m the BIGGEST METALLICA FAN around .
This was the band that introduced me to Metal. Ah, with Cliff still alive, I was 10 years old. During the 80's they were my favourite band. Still can't stop hearing those fast live tracks, Thanks Youtube... This is great stuff. Not easy for Jason "replacing" God Clifford Burton. After AJFA they were never more the same. This is the thrash at its best (Slayer, Kreator and Sepultura also in those times).
@WikiHeba96 they suck now. they cant even play this song like this anymore. Lars is a completely different drummer now.......horrible drummer. there is now way he can drum this heavy anymore. sad.
@alucard1083 you know that Lars is 48 right ? They are never going to be this young again, OBVIOUSLY. But it does not change the fact that they are still fucking awesome, and they still play ! appreciate it
@WikiHeba96 You do know Dave (AK-47) Lombardo is around the same age and still the same drummer if not better then he's always been right????????? Face it Lars will never be as good as Dave (AK-47) Lombardo
@bfmvryan90 i really couldnt give a shit if there is a fucking Davo Lombardo and he is old and he canplay drums I DONT CARE. Lars is fucking awesome in every way. Not only the way he plays drums is great but every single thing about him DEAL WITH IT
@WikiHeba96 he was awesome with Napster, he was awesome with Enter Sandman, Load, Reload, with his crappy drums on St. Anger, he was so awesome with Dave as well at Some Kind of Monster. LARS IS FUCKING AWESOME!!! WHO FUCKING DARES TO DOUBT THAT!! FUCK HELL YEAH!! (irony was on) Stop being a fanboy and admit that Metallica Drums were good at kill em all and that it. Lars is old (he cant avoid that) and he is not a good drummer. BTW, since 1988 with that cd crap Metallica Sucks, theres no bass
@OverPrice95 so your saying his drumming on kill em all was better than on and justice for all? that right there automatically makes everything you just said worthless
Bands go bad because they get caught up in the commercialization. Black Sabbath - Never say die, Kiss- Unmasked , Scorpions - Savage Amusement , Judast Priest - turbo, Ac/Dc - Blow up your video, Van Halen - ou812 , Metallica - load, and on and on. Some bands make comebacks some dont. In my opinion Metallica didnt. They were fucking amazing back then though....
@NWOWCW4Life1 i didn't listen to it either, i just went on the website and previewed every song and yeah they sucked as you can imagine, and yeah the 30 yr anniversary concert is epic, milanicachannel is uploading heaps of shit from it /watch?v=mPHfx-rq650
Even though back then James didn't need Jason to make them more metal, seeing James was a true METAL GOD until 1993, Jason did bring a very cool METAL vibe to the band. Rob doesn't. Rob doesn't headbang. He's always on his knees or doing some weird crab like move. It's not a circus show. It's a damn metal act. I miss Jason. I grew up on him.
@BigMetalMan365 woudent you have the balls to get up there and play with metallica ??? everybody who could do it would do it.....and Cliff is a great bassplayer but not the best. there are so many unknown jazz bass player how are 1000 times better ..Even in heavy metal ..i dont think Cliff is as good as Geezer Butler or Steve Harris... especially not as Geezer Butler he started the hole bassinsanity. dont you think ?
@aalainhulsbosch yea yea i agree man but i mean for this genre and with this band he is the best...its a figure of opinion i think he is one of the best i have ever seen...i mean he could play beasty ass solos on the bass with his fingers...not many do that...at least as good as him
Also you can tell it's Jason, look at his shirt for starters, Jason wears that alot, and second you can see that James is taller than him, James was not taller than Cliff, so it's not Cliff.
Much respect to Cliff! We miss you dude! Carry on teaching God how to play Bass! Truly an epic figure indeed, wish I could of seen them with him alive!
it shows how metal will live for ever and pop will die no pop band has lasted as long as Metallica (from 2000 to present) and how Metallica will live until Lars and James die and shut the fuck up about Lars he'll beat the living shit out of you
Holy shit they blew this one out of the park! The studio version is 4,45 and this live version is 4,12! Full speed tharsh at its best! Metal up your ass!

Okay, I like Cliff, but he could never hope to touch the "Best Bassist Ever" title.
That title rightfully belongs to Jaco Pastorius. Though, there are other great ones too, like Charles Mingus and Victor Wooten.

R.I.P. Clifford Lee Burton... You will be remembered in our hearts
I'll be playing this song at my school's talent show(which is on 4/20 apparently) to bring back the days when he was still alive

Do you guys thing james played it perfectly on the guitar? since it's so damn fast!! and he's also singing though
mfx999 11 months ago
Also you can tell it's Jason, look at his shirt for starters, Jason wears that alot, and second you can see that James is taller than him, James was not taller than Cliff, so it's not Cliff.
