@ andrstdz check my new comment on page new York perfected the skyscraper Chicago may have invented I've been in Chicago no comparison I'm a native of NYC when those twin towers were up they were much more massive and made the face of NYC they dwarf the empire state building and yeah 80ft shorter but still the two city's don't compare ask around NY hands down

&andrsdtz ok I've seen Chicago been there there is no comparison I'm from NYC now living in LA NYC has almost 5,000 thousand commercial buildings or more compared to chicagos 2,000 when the twin towers were up there was no touching NYC they were more massive and than the Willis tower even tho Willis was taller by 80ft which is nothing! NYC is just in a class by itself ask around

@1977Brehon its true that NYC and Chicago are two quite different Cities. You can´t compare them cause each of them has its qualities. Also they are set on totally different locations, one on Manhatten between the Hudson and Chicago alongside Lake Michigan. Also their histories are quite different. So to end this discussion you got valid points and NYC is a great city but I prefer Chicago :P

This project is basically finished. The Spire's developer had been sued for $4.9 million on September 8, 2010. That hole ought to be filled and then turned into a park or what not.

@xAaleRx I live in Chicago...until the American economy turns around, it remains on hold. There is a problem with getting the proper financing to build it...in other words, not enough tennants/residents as of now to continue construction. As of today, there is just a hole in the ground. When complete, I beleive it will top at 125 stories or so..the Sears (Willis) Tower is 110 stories. Will be another gem in the Chicago skyline!

yea and the basement takes a lot of time to do that only you can't just make 2 3 floors underneath the mud lvl way more then that 's for sure so keep a building so high and very very big weight 15 20 floors underneath

With the 2016 loss, I am confident that Kelleher will announce shortly the cancellation of this project.

The lot is too small anyway, and this monstrosity destroys the synergy of Chicago's world class skyline. A more modestly-scaled building should be built here and probably will during the next boom. These happen in Chicago every 15 years or so, so that hole will be there until 2024 or so.

When it is finished, you can fly over there in your hover car and take 3D movies of it. Then, while in Chicago, head over to catch the World Series-winning Chicago Cubs.

In other words, don't hold your breath. Work is officially postponed, Calatrava has been stiffed on $12 owed for the design work, most of the sales staff has been layed off, and the sight is being secured for a very long delay.

This overly ambitious project is all but dead in its current form.

JohnnyCreampuff is totally right. I love to look at the list of tallest buildings under construction. There are 2 that will be like 2008 ft tall and 2039. I find that hilarious, they're obviously trying to go for the record while the spire will go up to 2000 feet, which shows it just wants to be tall and doesn't care about getting the record.

i agree with you guys, Spires on top of buildings usually are kind of cheating for more hight. Antennas are another thing cause they are usefull.

One thing I like about the Chicago Spire design is that it is supposed to top out at a SOLID 2,000 feet. None of this cheating where they build a short building and then put a 400 foot thin metal spire on top like the freeeeeeeedom tower design! Then they have the nerve to call that one of the tallest buildings in the world. What a joke! The Chicago Spire, however, will be a great icon not only for Chicago but for the whole United States.

not at all, just look how long foundation work at Ground Zero is taking. In a few weeks they should star working on underground parking and then finally it will go upwards in 2009
