Get two, one before and after ... me, I've got a Keeley phaser up front right after a EP Booster (both dip switches down) which is connected to the guitar, then one in the TC Electronics G-force. Every flavor; 4, 6, 8 and 12 stage phasers :) analog and digital.
Sounds good both ways....... I always assemble my pedals based on what I'm playing that set... then there's no extra stuff hanging around making weird.
The difference is whether or not you want your modulation pedal to modulate your distorted tone, or your distortion pedal to distort your modulated tone. The difference would be far more noticeable if you tried the same experiment with an overdrive and a chorus pedal (particularly with the rate set fairly high), or an overdrive and a delay pedal.
I can tell the difference only when a chord is sustained for a while. If the distortion is first it seems like a cleaner phase. If it's second it sounds like it hits the high end then stop then go down and stop. This seems only apparent when holding out the chord. At least to me.
I'd run the phase before the drive if it's not a heavy drive. It should definitely be before any distortions or heavy fuzz boxes, though. The only way I'd put the phase towards the end of a pedal chain is if I was using it for an ambient or shoegazing sound, which sounds awesome with all mod pedals on
@angry penis guy. Don't feed the troll. If you don't like what they write, don't read it or thumbs down it.
I think it really depends on what you're playing...the phaser after the luther gives a more obvious phasing sound. But when its before it gives it a nice subtle sound that sits better for parts that arent supposed to be outrageous
here's my take. With the drive pedal in front, you get a driven tone with a sweep.
with the phase in front, you get a kind of messy sweep that has grit to it. so... its really personal preference with what you're lookin for. for me, the standard overdrive into the phase sounds the best.
Why does my phase 90 before the distortion "blanket" my overall overall guitar tone? My tone seems darker for some reason when the signal is passed through the phase 90 ->distorton pedal. My tone seems brighter when the signal passes through the distortion pedal -> than phaser, unlike the other way around. Its too bad cause I like the sound of phase before dirt
A phaser is a notched frequency filter for which the notches move back and forth across the spectrum.
A clean guitar signal contains mostly low frequencies. Phaser on a clean signal means few notches intersect the signal's spectrum. Overdrive after this introduces higher frequencies, which aren't subject to the notched filter.
An overdrive pedal adds many higher frequencies by clipping. A phaser on this distorted signal means many notches intersect the signal's spectrum.
personal preference, but with the phase in front of the dirt, you are getting more phase sound because the OD is driving the effect more, rather than phasing the overdrive sound. I like it in front better, imho. NICE pedal! how much for the OD?
With the drive first, the higher harmonics are a little better preserved; the phase sounds smooth and transparent. The attack transients have more presence. I think its a better sound for those with a perm and tight leather pants. With the phaser first the swirl is angry and the overall tone has more depth and body. I reckon this sound more suits the guy with boils on his skull and puke stained jeans. Im not a guitarist btw, I just like to plug analog synths into these things.
hey, here's a suggestion, if obesity is such a problem in this country just don't eat for a week and get TWO Luther pedals. this way you can have your cake and eat it too!
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A UTUBE SHODOWN OF ALL THE BEST GEAR DEMOING GUN SLINGERS IN THIS UNIVERSE; I MEAN PHILX, GEARMANDUDE, ANDAY. I MEAN TO THE DEATH!
I can hear the difference with the driver before the phaser.
I overdrove a Ross flanger using a Yamaha DX9 keyboard using an organ setting. I needed a Leslie or rotating speaker effect. It sounded fantastic cause it gave that Hammond B3 sound with that unmistakeable growl.
Yep, overdriving the effect works, especially with low padded inputs like that old Ross flanger, now out of production.
My view on it is, if you want a Van Halen-esque colourful soloing tone from your phase, put it before dirt, and if you want your phase to sound big and rhythmic when using dirt, put it after. It's down to your personal application, I've always used it before :)
@JgHaverty I have a delay pedal before and after my dirt pedals. I am not retarded. Some people like the tones made possible by running a delay before overdrive.
@Jakeistoocool143 Except you dont have much delay going on before distortion pedal. If you have a full volume repeat back with any appreciable amount of feedback setting, you will cycle your pedal....
for me the choice was very simple :p i use the amp distorsion.. when putting my phase 90 in front, i have lots of hum.. when putting it in the effects loop, its perfectly silent.. easy choice.
You should do the same thing but with wah and distortion/overdrive.
Placing things like compression and pitch shifting has also been a pain for me, but wah and distortion order would be helpful for more people i think.
usely we use temporal effects (delay verb phase flange.....) into the amp's loop
and all the dinamycs effect(wah, dirt sound, boost, disto, pitch......) direct into the amp's input
but everybody's got the right to try everything up side down in all the senses of pluggin to find THE sound anyway !
now it is very funny to put a wah pedal after a dirt sound héhéhé it is not forbiden but it is not the ''regular'' way to use it ;) but if you need that sound just do it !!!
@masterdav76 Speak for yourself, man. I run everything but my tuner in the loop. I personally think it sounds better, and it's better for wire managment then having some things in the loop and other things direct. I don't know how many guitar players you know, but the people I play out with mostly doesn't even care or know about tone. So they end up with crazy chains that don't make sense to people like you or me. Oh, and I'm the only guitar player in my community that even knows what a loop is.
@SpinGoldmusic everything is possible to do, i tryed a thousand of combinations evrything works it just depend on the sound you want.. , i have been to a guitar school when i felt i was reaching the ceiling of my skills with Chistophe Godin as teacher so we are a full comunauty of guitar players.
but for the loop or direct things i learn that in a recording studio's+musics school at a time.. but they allways told us to try everything when we need to have a ''special'' sound we're looking for.
@masterdav76 Ya, I think I'm going to try and run all my stuff direct today for the hell of it. Honestly if I could get the sound I want I would always plug everything direct because It would just be more convenient. Unfortunately I care about my tone too much not to care... I agree with you though everything works and it just depends on what you're looking for.......
Here is my simple rule of thumb to get the most out of your pedals; modification is always pre, modulation is always post... unless you have the pedals to run both.
to me it sounds like the sweeping of the phase is more warm, clear, and pronounced when its put after the OD. i would like to see more "myth busty thingies" like this vid, keep up the great work!
I do this for a living in the studios. Just so guys should know this. Your effects should go in this order. Compressor, eq (optional), any boosts (mid range etc...) Distortion pedals, Volume pedal, all effects, chorus/tremelo/phaser/phlanger/diminsion (anything that colors), then lastly reverb/delay. There ya go have at it ;p
@JohnEddy123 amp does not plug into the pedal. the pedal plugs into the amp. front of the board is the closest part to the player. electronically speaking.
to agree with comments previously posted, i.e "wacopacco"... I definitely did hear a stronger phase when it's the last thing in the chain. But again, to quote "stevensharpnine" do what sounds better to you. The cool thing about the fact that they sound different, is now you have more versatility
It really all depends on your rig line what OD, what Dist, and what amp. That is where the difference really comes in. Running a phase or a vibe into a gain box is also different than into an amp, but, you always get a reduced range of sweep and warble before gains. Not to say it cannot be a good tone, it can be, but, anyone putting modulators in a loop also knows they are more defined and have a greater sweep. True, it's what you like but some people without a doubt will like crap.
This window is too small to really detail proper options and chain issues. Given your rig and not knowing if you have a loop or not. (Tuner first) I do not like having tuners in line and prefer to feed them a spare out from a box. Bypass is a myth, it does not mean you will not get cap load or loss. Wah, Booster (can be before or after main drive) Nova Drive, Modulator, Delay, ISP. If you have a loop, put the Nova mod into the delay in the loop w the ISP last in chain in the loop.
... much better with the drive before... at least to me... although i am a "drive-beofore-everything" kind of man... i love my fuzz and overdrive before my wahs as well
if the mxr phaser is connected after the luther drive ,the sound is actually more boosted...i think ,in that situation ,that the guitar sounds like there some kind of compression pedal in the circuit...that's my opinion
I think it sounds better with the phaser after the Luther.
I find that with most of the pedals I've played with, the chain setup makes a difference, even if sometimes it's only a subtle one. The Micro POG, for example, sounds almost completely different before vs after a fuzz pedal.
important thing to note about this is, most OD pedals will color your tone WAY more than a luther and alot of phasers will suck your tone waaaay worse than a Phase90
in alot of case you'll find you get this really good sweeping tone for rhythm with the phase after the OD, but you lost alot of guts and bite, because the od is only overdriving certain frequencies at any given time
depending on the depth of the phaser's sweep of course
End all controversy and buy a amp w/ effects loop... put all time based effects in there where there supposed to be. Do a demo of that. Effects in front vs. in the loop..
I like the Phase before the overdrive. This is how I run my modulation effects(chorus, flange, phase) before the overdrive and delay effects(Delay, reverb) after the overdrive.
Huge diff when I put the Phase90 after the Blackstar HT-Dual and then before it. Before it is more EVH. After it is a more pronounced, thicker effect. I prefer the EVH way.
I guess Drive before beatiful tone but Phase before sounds like a salad of mix of a lot of notes. It´s just my opnion... Hey Gearmanndude did u change ur Luther Drive? It sounds better now than before when u did a comparing video with KOT.
it's a pretty simple concept really. Treat your overdrive pedal like you would an amp... If you run the phaser into a clean amp, you get a very clean, pronounced phase tone. If you run it into an amp thats overdriving itself, then the overdrive is going to be the more pronounced effect because it's the amp thats overdriving, aka the last thing in your chain.
once you wrap your head around that it kinda makes it easier to understand.
I actually noticed a drastic increase in phase effect with the drive after the phase. Because the MXR Phase 90 is such a mild effect (which is a good thing, the Script 90 is even milder) the drive really seemed to open it up, a little too much for me. But the thing with pedals is experimenting and finding what suits you.
Less pronounced with the phase first and I much perfer it like that generally. BUT! Sometimes it's good to mix it up when being creative, there's no better, just different and it's all preference.
personally think it depends on the dist pedal. my script 90 sounds much better after the DS-2 and its a drastic difference; however wherever i place it before or after my old dod death metal, it doesn't make as big a change. just a thought tho.
hey gearmanndude. how about showing us gear heads the difference between putting the overdrive behind/after the wah? :)
@Darndez2 same idea...a digitech screamin blues before a standard crybaby sounded much fatter than the traditional order...in this case i think before is smoother, and after is much more pronounced...
Too close for my ear to hear a difference. Maybe a little more sweep on the before. Good demo. Love the Luther. Oh, wait. Just hear the little Rush lick both ways. Way more drive with Luther in front. Depending on what your sound is, both would work. Back to loving on the Luther, that will be my next investment, if I can stop buying guitars.
I run my rig with a Boss DS2 before the Phase 90 and it does make a huge difference for me... After the Dist the phaser is more pronounced and I like it that way, the only problem is that you get an annoying volume boost but I don't care, it's just a matter of how you like it (that's what she said)
anything with a sensetivity knob if the distortion in front it make the pedal go full out. i have a zvex fuzz factory and a synth wah after it and the fuzz makes the synth wah go crazy. mxr p90 sounds good either way it just depends on if you want the overdrive phased or the phase overdrived.
i have an overdrive, wha, phaser, and an echo pedal on my pedal board. the only difference i here i where i place my wah and overdrive (in front or behind the wah) but thats just how it sounds to me
i was always told to put the 90 1st crybaby 1st I think your overdrive is mad cool BTY and it just sounded better w/ the overdrive 1st

I find that with most of the pedals I've played with, the chain setup makes a difference, even if sometimes it's only a subtle one. The Micro POG, for example, sounds almost completely different before vs after a fuzz pedal.

important thing to note about this is, most OD pedals will color your tone WAY more than a luther and alot of phasers will suck your tone waaaay worse than a Phase90
in alot of case you'll find you get this really good sweeping tone for rhythm with the phase after the OD, but you lost alot of guts and bite, because the od is only overdriving certain frequencies at any given time
depending on the depth of the phaser's sweep of course

ithink the distortion before the 9er has more balls but the 9er before the luther is more suddle.
justin0185 1 year ago
More of a seemingly fater sound with the dist before, I don't know but it's diff.

They sounded so close to me that I'd have trouble telling in a blind test which was first. Nice demo though, thanks.

for me phase after a fuzz is the way to go.

Major, major coolness GMD!!! More like this, how about a wah before and after? They both sound good but seldom to we have the patience to do this.
LUTHER rules!!! You picked the best phaser as well.
Smart observation that guy made about enhancing the sweep or gain, for all you kids in the bleachers, EVH used this Phase 90 on the early VH stuff.

i think the phaser is more dominating before the od

There was more juice when the phase went after the luther

No brainer. OD before Phase.

End all controversy and buy a amp w/ effects loop... put all time based effects in there where there supposed to be. Do a demo of that. Effects in front vs. in the loop..
dbenc 1 year ago
I like the Phase before the overdrive. This is how I run my modulation effects(chorus, flange, phase) before the overdrive and delay effects(Delay, reverb) after the overdrive.

Huge diff when I put the Phase90 after the Blackstar HT-Dual and then before it. Before it is more EVH. After it is a more pronounced, thicker effect. I prefer the EVH way.
odgeUK 1 year ago
little more subtle before the dirt box..as was in my rig...I always preferred it in front before I sold my MXR EVH

I think it sounded brighter after. Thanks!

the whole "myth" of the which-before-which concept has a simple solution: do what sounds best to YOU in YOUR rig.

you should do fuzz before or after vibe

other modulation effects before and after dirt ~
sparrow1133 1 year ago
I guess Drive before beatiful tone but Phase before sounds like a salad of mix of a lot of notes. It´s just my opnion... Hey Gearmanndude did u change ur Luther Drive? It sounds better now than before when u did a comparing video with KOT.
Cheers Man!
andretoyo 1 year ago
...... overdrive FIRST , phaser LAST !! . {;o)
PeterRosenqvist 1 year ago
it's a pretty simple concept really. Treat your overdrive pedal like you would an amp... If you run the phaser into a clean amp, you get a very clean, pronounced phase tone. If you run it into an amp thats overdriving itself, then the overdrive is going to be the more pronounced effect because it's the amp thats overdriving, aka the last thing in your chain.
once you wrap your head around that it kinda makes it easier to understand.
phase before dirt: big dirt
dirt before phase: big phase.

Does it actually make a difference to the sound if you put the pedals in different order?

@HThe1st no we are all here just to discuss politics thats all..no difference ask any gearhead!!
MOSKII58 6 months ago
It sounds like the Phaser is a bit more present when you have the phaser before the overdrive.
ibanezman007 1 year ago
I actually noticed a drastic increase in phase effect with the drive after the phase. Because the MXR Phase 90 is such a mild effect (which is a good thing, the Script 90 is even milder) the drive really seemed to open it up, a little too much for me. But the thing with pedals is experimenting and finding what suits you.
laughingboy0068 1 year ago
I've been trying to crack this myth with Fuzzes and UniVibe pedals. What's everybodies take?
bgingras05 1 year ago
Never use Modulation effects before overdrive unless its a chorus pedal used to thicken the sound a little
Phishboy26 1 year ago
Less pronounced with the phase first and I much perfer it like that generally. BUT! Sometimes it's good to mix it up when being creative, there's no better, just different and it's all preference.
Coztomba 1 year ago 2
Its more "Curved" at the points were its like a wah almost opened all the way and almost closed all the way when the drive is BEFOR
bamf6396 1 year ago
Drive first after watching this!!
boffe19 1 year ago
personally think it depends on the dist pedal. my script 90 sounds much better after the DS-2 and its a drastic difference; however wherever i place it before or after my old dod death metal, it doesn't make as big a change. just a thought tho.
hey gearmanndude. how about showing us gear heads the difference between putting the overdrive behind/after the wah? :)
Darndez2 1 year ago
@Darndez2 same idea...a digitech screamin blues before a standard crybaby sounded much fatter than the traditional order...in this case i think before is smoother, and after is much more pronounced...
rodie1994 1 year ago

Yup Ive got my Ds1 after my phase 90 and i like it that way no crazy volume boost but its all user taste!
Th3wh1t3kn1ght 1 year ago
Too close for my ear to hear a difference. Maybe a little more sweep on the before. Good demo. Love the Luther. Oh, wait. Just hear the little Rush lick both ways. Way more drive with Luther in front. Depending on what your sound is, both would work. Back to loving on the Luther, that will be my next investment, if I can stop buying guitars.

Phaser before Drive, sounds raspy and not as full but I think I like it more.

firebird116 1 year ago
I run my rig with a Boss DS2 before the Phase 90 and it does make a huge difference for me... After the Dist the phaser is more pronounced and I like it that way, the only problem is that you get an annoying volume boost but I don't care, it's just a matter of how you like it (that's what she said)

anything with a sensetivity knob if the distortion in front it make the pedal go full out. i have a zvex fuzz factory and a synth wah after it and the fuzz makes the synth wah go crazy. mxr p90 sounds good either way it just depends on if you want the overdrive phased or the phase overdrived.
baxter2k5 1 year ago
i have an overdrive, wha, phaser, and an echo pedal on my pedal board. the only difference i here i where i place my wah and overdrive (in front or behind the wah) but thats just how it sounds to me
