True, the death of civilians was completely uncalled for, but then again, if the people want to be British, there shouldn't be an IRA in the first place! If you're old enough to remember the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, it means that Ireland dropped it's claims to Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Assembly was formed. Now, this assembly has no less power than the Welsh Assembly or the Scottish Assembly. It also highlights the fact that if Northern Ireland decided on independence, it would be allowed a referendum, as are Scotland and Wales.

@Hindenburg12886 There is no stain on the irish flag, those IRA volunteers were mostly from Northern Ireland, but most became detatched from a legitimate struggle, the terrorism status creeped into the organisation at around 1972 especially with the bombings but criminality also became commonplace within the organisation and it was never the IRA who fractured communities, that was achieved by unionist dictatorships. Also you conviently ommited the Protestant terror groups.

Also, we have the strongest air force in Europe and almost a third of the planet see the Queen as their head of state. And you don't honestly think Scotland will become independent when only around 30% want it, do you? The Russian Empire had concentration camps as early as the 1700s (concentration camp being a camp that although keeps a specific group in a contained area, wasn't actually built to kill them). The first extermination camp, however, was on Shark Island, in German-occupied Namibia, built mainly to kill off a specific group of people (rebels). In the Boer War, the camps were mainly used to detain POWs before they were transported across the British Empire.

@92LiamO I think it was Kitchener who decided to start the massacre. Now, to someone like me, this was completely wrong as the civilians in the camps hadn't done anything wrong. They were completely innocent and Kitchener had no right to do it. It exposes the fact that every empire had it's flaws, I suppose. I have nothing against the other branches, they all agreed to disarm and fight for independence on the democratic front in the 1990s, and I'm overjoyed that they've done so! True, the death of civilians was completely uncalled for, but then again, if the people want to be British, there shouldn't be an IRA in the first place! It's not for Ireland to decide if the North belongs to them or not. It's for the North to decide, and a poll by the Belfast Telegraph in 2010 showed that 55% of the population wanted to remain in the UK.

@FreedomisIRA Well, technically, as of last year, Wales' national language became Welsh as well as English. I know because I remember it. Gaelic is also taught in Scottish schools. I personally am proud to be able to speak the Welsh language and am proud of my country's history and culture as well as Britain's. If you're old enough to remember the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, it means that Ireland dropped it's claims to Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Assembly was formed. Now, this assembly has no less power than the Welsh Assembly or the Scottish Assembly. It also highlights the fact that if Northern Ireland decided on independence, it would be allowed a referendum, as are Scotland and Wales.

@Hindenburg12886 There is no stain on the irish flag, those IRA volunteers were mostly from Northern Ireland, but most became detatched from a legitimate struggle, the terrorism status creeped into the organisation at around 1972 especially with the bombings but criminality also became commonplace within the organisation and it was never the IRA who fractured communities, that was achieved by unionist dictatorships. Also you conviently ommited the Protestant terror groups.

@92LiamO I'm not a religious man. I don't judge people for their beliefs, just for their actions. Both sides used conflict, and I'm strongly opposed to that. Protestant or Catholic, an organisation that promoted terror in Ireland was wrong to do so. And about the stain on the Irish flag, I was referring to the modern IRA. It shouldn't exist so long as the people of Northern Ireland are happy as part of the United Kingdom. As I keep saying, were they not happy, a referendum would be held.

Also, we have the strongest air force in Europe and almost a third of the planet see the Queen as their head of state. The Russian Empire had concentration camps as early as the 1700s (concentration camp being a camp that although keeps a specific group in a contained area, wasn't actually built to kill them). The first extermination camp, however, was on Shark Island, in German-occupied Namibia, built mainly to kill off a specific group of people (rebels). In the Boer War, the camps were mainly used to detain POWs before they were transported across the British Empire.

@92LiamO I think it was Kitchener who decided to start the massacre. Now, to someone like me, this was completely wrong as the civilians in the camps hadn't done anything wrong. They were completely innocent and Kitchener had no right to do it. It exposes the fact that every empire had it's flaws, I suppose. But, the point is, it can't officially be declared as a "death camp" because that wasn't the original purpose. Shark Island was built to kill, so, generally speaking, it was the first.

@92LiamO I'm overjoyed that we agree on this issue and I hope that were there a call for a referendum, that it would be done fairly, democratically, peacefully and that only Northern Ireland would be allowed to decide their future. Should this arise, it will no doubt, whichever ways the needle swings, be the final clincher that ends the dispute once and for all! @Hindenburg12886 Im sorry Hindeburg, but I will never orgive anything the UDA or UVF or Brits did, I can tolerate Brits somewhat, but what really gets me is how they tolerated those Protestant asshole terrorist. I lost many relatives this way, my 2 great grandfather and his 2 brothers fought the English in the 1910's. Both were in the Easter Rising, Irish War of Independance, and the Irish Civil War.

@FreedomisIRA And I lost relatives to the IRA. Not in conflict, but on a street. He gave his life saving civilians from a hotel and was repaid by the IRA with a bullet to the head. But this I have set aside, so that a peaceful resolution to the issue may be found.

How many times have I said that all terrorist organisations, be they Protestant or Catholic, should all be gotten rid of, and a solution should be found through peace and democracy? I hate the UDA! If you demonstrate peacefully, and let the UDA do the violence, who do you think will look the worst in the eyes of the public? You could get so much support if you just stopped the violence and went for the democratic view. @Hindenburg12886 My great granfathers younger brother was killed in the easter rising. Great grandfather himself was killed in the Irish war of independace, and his other younger in the Irish ivil war. Many of my relatives have died this way.

Every member of our overseas territories, our Commonwealth, our nation has the right to determine whether not it wishes to remains in it's current position. Every member of the UK, the Commonwealth of Nations and our Overseas Territories wants to be there. If it didn't, a referendum would be granted.
