@Ajolanka There are too nice of people in North Dakota. They dont vandelize shit like childesh people do in libtarded places like California or New York.
@theamazingempiricist it was the tallest when i took the video. would you ask someone who took a video of a baby elephant in 2005 to change the title?
@jku3000 Your logic is really flawed. But we're looking at a structure, and the structure didn't change at all. The video's title could easily be changed because the world around it has changed now that there's a taller structure. It's like if I continued to call myself the world's tallest man even if someone was taller than me, but I still continued to call myself the tallest man because at one point I was the tallest man in the world.
This tower was known as the KTHI Television Tower until June 1995. It is the second tallest structure in the world, eclipsed only by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, completed in 2009. From 1974 until its collapse in 1991, the Warsaw Radio mast in Poland also eclipsed the KVLY-TV mast.
It says on wiki that they made a taller building in warshaw but in collapsed in 1991 and they also say that the building in dubai surpassed this one in 2008. (from the link posted there!) But anyway, it's still impressive!
Now some crazy folks should build a 1 kilometer building just because we can!
@jland904 I was curious...wikipedia says Fargo alone has 5 television channels...for a population of 100 thousand. That's pretty good for such a small place.
Thank you for the Video - i am crazy about tall buildings/structures. I wish you would have done a 5 minute video (going close to it) and so on. One day i need to go there. If you have the chance next time please do some more video material !
Burj Kahlifa in Dubai is 2717 feet tall, and its a office building/hotel. KVLY TV tower is 2,063 ft. But this video is 2009 and the Burj Kahlifa was finished in 2010.
@WetsnatcheeShorts I'm pretty sure the Burj Khalifa reached it's max height before it was officially finished though, in 2008 or somewhere around there
Hey, gang, once you achieve terminal velocity, it doesn't truly matter how much higher one thing is than another.....that's just more falling where you can be screaming and shitting yourself inside out!!!
@brycelarson2 I've heard that the radio waves from these towers can cause heart problems when you're climbing...is that an old wives tale?
no i climb cell towers for crown castle international, and anytime we have to climb a radio or tv tower we have to call in and have it shut down cause of the radiation will mess you up.
@FullonFuZi0n CN Tower is the tallest Free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere, at 553.33 m (1,815.4 ft). The KVLY tower is technically a mast, and stands at 628.8 m (2,063 ft), supported by guy wires.
@Gabester64 - It really is more of a mindf*ck then anything else. Though it is exhausting as all hell climbing that high up a straight ladder. Plus it has a safety line to click into if you have a harness, so you're not completely SOL if you fall lol.
The CN tower at 1815' in Toronto is the tallest Free standing tower in the western hemisphere. It is hollow like the Confederation Bridge between NB and PEI so they can sway with the currents.
You know the highest structures in the world are cirrus clouds although they are not man made.
This mast is the tallest structure in the world in this class of structure, only after the Warsaw mast collapsed. Buildings are in a whole different classification. The United States would have taller structures but there are federal laws limiting the height of new structures being built. Therefore this mast in North Dakota will always be the tallest structure in the U.S. because the limit has been set @ 2063 feet.
@JonaVicis Really? That would be disappointing. The only reason I went to North Dakota was to see this thing. Which ones are taller? Other than the Warsaw mast that collapsed and the Tokyo tower under construction, I've never come across anything taller.
@JonaVicis I'll think you'll find there is no other structure taller than this transmitter. Think of it as The Eiffel Tower With the Blackpool Tower on top. That's some crazy stuff
@JonaVicis I'll think you'll find there is no other structure taller than this transmitter except for the Burj Khalifa . Think of it as The Eiffel Tower With the Blackpool Tower on top. That's some crazy stuff
@JonaVicis I'm a little curious about your post as well. You say there were several towers "MUCH" taller? Ummmm. What were/are they? (and yes currently the tallest man-made structure is the Burj Khalifa at 2,717ft (828m)) The Warsaw Radio mast was 2,120ft (646m), and even at that amazing height it was far below the height of The Burj so what exactly are you talking about?
@JonaVicis kvly is the tallest structure in the world (until Burj Khalifa)....Other buildings are the tallest FREE-STANDING structures in the world. the kvly has support wires so it does not go into that catagory
I climb a 2046 ft tower every day for work in Sacramento CA. Joint Venture. I have also climbed this tower before the digital antenna was installed. I believe it was at 2063 then. It IS the second tallest manmade structure in the world. But the Berj Khalifa tower in Dubai is the tallest in the world at 2723ft.
@bonviej1 CN tower is 553.33 m, this is 628.8 m so to answer your question, yes it is. However, the CN tower is a freestanding structure, this is attached by cables, which means it doesn't stand on its own. Antennas like this often fall to the ground, there used to be one in Poland that was slightly taller than this one but it fell over at some point in the early 90s I think.
@KB9TKB You can't just throw another couple on top.
Those have small margins of error, if you was to add a couple of sections you would have to take it all down and build it up from scratch with a new base.
This would make a super amateur radio antenna tower. Just think of the contacts you could make even on 2 meters if the antenna were as far to the top as you could go.
I wrote my name on the beacon this tower, one of the coolest climbs I have ever had, we had one hour to get all of our shit done, I hope someone finally fixed that climbing pole on the side of that antenna...
@jku3000 None that I'm aware of, unless the climber has a pacemaker, but then, he wouldn't be climbing. The most danger a tower climber is in while the transmitter's on would be getting *RF burns* of any sort. But even that is greatly mitigated by simply lowering power. But there's no evidence to suggest "radiation" or cancer like SirAlfred mentioned. The tower is radiating electromagnetic waves, not Gamma rays.
@jku3000 Since FM and TV signals are radiated from antennae (called "bays") at the top of a tower, brycelarson2 was in more danger of falling than getting burned. However, if this had been an AM tower he climbed, especially one with higher power, different story. The entire tower is the antenna, therefore, the *whole thing* radiates a signal. Having said all this, I would NEVER climb any tower (even my 30-footer out back) without a belt of some kind. 2,000 feet is an AWFULLY LONG way to fall.
@jku3000 Depends on what effect they transmit at, normal shortwave transmitters and antennas on ships can give you a good electrocution if you get to close while transmitting. although with normal we are talking about 400 watts of power-output.
@jku3000 As a tower climber i can say that being close to high power RF antennae can cause your lead fillings to heat up and burn your teeth. In the winter I used to warm my hands on older style omni antenna. After all it is basically a microwave cooking you.
@jku3000 Electromagnetic radiation (RF) causes the moisture molecules in your body to move rapidly or 'rub together' which causes areas of most moisture in your body to heat up (ie eyes). By climbing a tower while the transmitter is turned on is a stupid (and potentially deadly) thing to do. RF can cause blindness, many types of cancer, sterility, not to mention 'cook' you. It's exactly how a microwave works. RF is aimed at the food. The higher the frequency & output power - the more dangerous.
@jku3000 I work in radio and yes you can get really screwed up (even death) by the radio waves coming off these towers. Depends on the signal strength though. I would never climb one of these illegally unless I wanted to lose some teeth or hair or die...
@AtomicFreerun It is radiation. Some signals are so weak you can climb past the antenna no problem, but some will cause issue. As for living next to the towers there is no problem. The radiation dissipates exponentially. Even getting 20 feet from an antenna is enough in most cases. But climbing right next to the antenna... thats different. I often shut our radio signal off for climbers to pass then turn it back on after they pass the antenna. Then do the same on their way down.
@jku3000 yeah, radio stations are like microwave when you approach to much, its some small limit like 6 meters, but its like putting yourself into a microwave, it isnt a good idea to climb these things while operating.
What balls you must have to climb to over 2000 ft. I have been up the CN Tower to the Space Deck and that is 1465 ft. The tip of the CN is 1815 ft and you physically climbed higher than that. How long did it take?
@brycelarson2 don't talk shit because when u climb this thing when it's on (i mean the antenna) then u get electrocuted from the inside by the radio waves so @jku3000 is absolutely right
I like the fact this tower is painted. Now most tall towers are strobed instead of painted.`While this in undoubtedly cheaper, it's just not as aesthetically pleasing
I worked as a high rigger back in the 60's and 70's and have free climbed and built TV towers and stacks to 1260'. I still have night mares of some of my buddies getting killed. Would have a close call about 4 times a year. For every hour worked, would have been far safer in Viet- Nam. Pops
People who climb this wear helmets just incase they fall that way when every bone and organ in there body is broken that helmet will be fine so they can send it to the next guy who has to climb it
@Microsoftultimatefan At the time I posted this the Burj Dubai had not been completed, so the KVLY tower was officially the tallest structure in the world.
@jku3000 this was the tallest tower until the 70's when it was surpassed by the warsaw radio tower in poland. however when it collapsed in 91 this tower regained the recognition. now its the burj kalifa in the UAE
i climbed one of these in my 20`s, it was the WTVM WRBL TV MAST in Cusseta Ga, i think it was 1750 feet, it was a hell of a lot higher than it looked,,,,i remember that much
it is the actual second tallest structue mankind ever build and third one overall(628m) behind the 800+ meters Burji Khalifa and the Warsaw radio mast(646m) that collapsed 91...
supported or not, these are the highest things we ever build until now...
I've been a rigger for 40 years now. I should point out that towers are self supporting and usually on four legs. Anything that is on guys are referd to as masts.
@petermines I've noticed that at the bottom of the "mast" will rest on all 3 columns coming together at a point resting in the center... Why is that? Wouldn’t it be more secure if each "leg" was fastened to the ground?
@Onetimegold A tower will have more structural stability and are constructed when hight is not required or when land area for guy wires is not available. Very tall masts are cheaper to construct but come with the problem of wind induced oscillation. Basically, tall structures are designed to move whch incudes rotation hence the point contact. A Many tall masts are electrically insulated at the base as well so it's easier to do this at one point.. Some masts are balanced on huge ball bearings.
I have been on the top of this tower in 2004 when I worked for a Communications Tower company out of Sioux Falls, SD.

The tower is radiating electromagnetic waves, not Gamma rays.
wannawatchu66 1 year ago 2
@jku3000 Since FM and TV signals are radiated from antennae (called "bays") at the top of a tower, brycelarson2 was in more danger of falling than getting burned. However, if this had been an AM tower he climbed, especially one with higher power, different story. The entire tower is the antenna, therefore, the *whole thing* radiates a signal. Having said all this, I would NEVER climb any tower (even my 30-footer out back) without a belt of some kind. 2,000 feet is an AWFULLY LONG way to fall.
wannawatchu66 1 year ago
@jku3000 Yes, if its transmitting it can actually burn you, so don't ever climb one of these towers.
smurfboywv 11 months ago 2
@jku3000 yes that is. the radio waves are far to weak to do anything.
EatDeeznuts1 10 months ago
@jku3000 Depends on what effect they transmit at, normal shortwave transmitters and antennas on ships can give you a good electrocution if you get to close while transmitting. although with normal we are talking about 400 watts of power-output.

@jku3000 no they do not cause heart problems. tho if your out of shape.......
syjess5 9 months ago
@jku3000 As a tower climber i can say that being close to high power RF antennae can cause your lead fillings to heat up and burn your teeth. In the winter I used to warm my hands on older style omni antenna. After all it is basically a microwave cooking you.
spookedjunglist 9 months ago
@jku3000 Electromagnetic radiation (RF) causes the moisture molecules in your body to move rapidly or 'rub together' which causes areas of most moisture in your body to heat up (ie eyes). By climbing a tower while the transmitter is turned on is a stupid (and potentially deadly) thing to do. RF can cause blindness, many types of cancer, sterility, not to mention 'cook' you. It's exactly how a microwave works. RF is aimed at the food. The higher the frequency & output power - the more dangerous.
craig3008 9 months ago
@jku3000 not many old wives where I'm from climb up 2k ft. structures- might be the russians again.
zaniwilson 9 months ago
@jku3000 I work in radio and yes you can get really screwed up (even death) by the radio waves coming off these towers. Depends on the signal strength though. I would never climb one of these illegally unless I wanted to lose some teeth or hair or die...
Egosu 9 months ago
@Egosu you mean like.. a sort of radiation?
AtomicFreerun 8 months ago
@AtomicFreerun It is radiation. Some signals are so weak you can climb past the antenna no problem, but some will cause issue. As for living next to the towers there is no problem. The radiation dissipates exponentially. Even getting 20 feet from an antenna is enough in most cases. But climbing right next to the antenna... thats different. I often shut our radio signal off for climbers to pass then turn it back on after they pass the antenna. Then do the same on their way down.
Egosu 8 months ago
@jku3000 yeah, radio stations are like microwave when you approach to much, its some small limit like 6 meters, but its like putting yourself into a microwave, it isnt a good idea to climb these things while operating.

@brycelarson2
What balls you must have to climb to over 2000 ft. I have been up the CN Tower to the Space Deck and that is 1465 ft. The tip of the CN is 1815 ft and you physically climbed higher than that. How long did it take?
beyondonethousand 1 year ago
@brycelarson2 Enjoy your radiation and cancer.
SirAlfredSourcock 1 year ago
@brycelarson2 damn bro, you got some balls.
Gabester64 8 months ago
@brycelarson2 don't talk shit because when u climb this thing when it's on (i mean the antenna) then u get electrocuted from the inside by the radio waves so @jku3000 is absolutely right

I like the fact this tower is painted. Now most tall towers are strobed instead of painted.`While this in undoubtedly cheaper, it's just not as aesthetically pleasing

it's not anymore tallest structure.

2,063 feet high and I still can't get a signal. Maybe it's not high enough.

the tallest structure (before Burj Khalifa) was Warsaw Radio Mast (2,120 feet) until its collapse in 1991 and then KVLY was back on the first place

I worked as a high rigger back in the 60's and 70's and have free climbed and built TV towers and stacks to 1260'. I still have night mares of some of my buddies getting killed. Would have a close call about 4 times a year. For every hour worked, would have been far safer in Viet- Nam. Pops

climb it, and jump.

Why waste all that $ on painting that monster when you could have just strobed it or run a dual-lighting system?
rwundrock 1 year ago
People who climb this wear helmets just incase they fall that way when every bone and organ in there body is broken that helmet will be fine so they can send it to the next guy who has to climb it
Deadsmile100 1 year ago
I read that they have to manually repair the towers for maintenance, which means going to the top. That's scary.

i wonder how tall that tower is?

@01confederate According to wikipedia it is 628.8 m (2,063 ft) tall.

@jku3000 thats way to tall for me lol

I thought the tallest structure is the Burj Dubai.
Microsoftultimatefan 1 year ago 8
@Microsoftultimatefan At the time I posted this the Burj Dubai had not been completed, so the KVLY tower was officially the tallest structure in the world.
jku3000 1 year ago 9
@jku3000 this was the tallest tower until the 70's when it was surpassed by the warsaw radio tower in poland. however when it collapsed in 91 this tower regained the recognition. now its the burj kalifa in the UAE
wildthing1368 11 months ago
@jku3000 it wasn't. The similar radio mast in Poland that fell down in 1991 was about 20 meters taller.
MaquisDrake 10 months ago
@Microsoftultimatefan well you microsolf fan (pfft) it is not, this is the tallest one
look at this vid about the same structure and you will have the explanation.

it is the actual second tallest structue mankind ever build and third one overall(628m) behind the 800+ meters Burji Khalifa and the Warsaw radio mast(646m) that collapsed 91...
supported or not, these are the highest things we ever build until now...
DarthRykar 1 year ago
I've been a rigger for 40 years now. I should point out that towers are self supporting and usually on four legs. Anything that is on guys are referd to as masts.
petermines 1 year ago 4
@petermines I've noticed that at the bottom of the "mast" will rest on all 3 columns coming together at a point resting in the center... Why is that? Wouldn’t it be more secure if each "leg" was fastened to the ground?
Onetimegold 1 year ago
@Onetimegold A tower will have more structural stability and are constructed when hight is not required or when land area for guy wires is not available. Very tall masts are cheaper to construct but come with the problem of wind induced oscillation. Basically, tall structures are designed to move whch incudes rotation hence the point contact. A Many tall masts are electrically insulated at the base as well so it's easier to do this at one point.. Some masts are balanced on huge ball bearings.
