Hey! I have a question. I bought a hamster 2 weeks ago. Just yesterday I thought to myself that she was either fat or pregnant. About 6 hrs ago, I came home and I tried to pick her up and she sqeaked. As I took a closer look, I noticed she was standing over a litter of 6-9 pups. Now what? 0_o I cleaner her cage 2 days ago, so I'm not worried about that. I gave her tissue and she used it for the nest. She has plenty of food n water... am I missing anything? Is 18 days too early to wean them? Thx!
I don't know what is tissue (I'm portuguese :P) but if it has fiber I advise you to not use it, fiber is dangerous for them.
All you have to do is changing the water and fill the feeder with food, be aware that the mother will probably put it at one coner of her nest, so, do not worry if you see the feeder empty after some hours, fill the feeder one time per day is enough (I advise you to use a big feeder, but not that big, these ceramic ones are pretty good), I advise you to...
... I advise you to give the mother some carrot, broccoli, apple, they will help her and her milk, but do not replace their food by this.
They start to eat with around 7-9 days, it all depends from litter to litter, generally my babies start at the 7th day.
They will not die if you take them away from the mother with 18 days, but I do NOT advise to, in my opinion, I take away them at the 25th day, but after the 21th day they will be weaned.

ummm how do the babies when they are 1 year old and survive do we leave the babies alone without the mother or wat. beacause my hamster gave birth and i seperated the mother and the father and put the mother together with the babies.eventhough i did that the babies just lie down and they are not moving at all. i hope you reply to this:)

@SieraBeagan1 if they r from the same batch then they wont kill each other but my hamster got my brothers hamsterpregant and they werent related all you have to do is put them in the same cage and watch them if they fight split them up and tryanother day if they are just fine leave them in a little longer...you can tell when there making babies

hamsters do eat their children when they feel threaten. You were a child, and so you probably were loud or your hamster didn't feel her children were safe and ate them. Yup, hamsters rather eat their children then fearing that someone else eats them. They'll also eat them if they have human smell (from picking them up)...
I had pups recently and I fear even to look at the babies, I dunno, my female hamster is crazy!...

@oliviaxxx4 you shouldnt breed hamsters if you dont know any of that stuff and yea actually alot of first time moms eat their babies if they r put under stress and never pick the babies up till they are atleast 14 days old or mom will not recognize ur scent nd eat them dwarfs usally have 5-7 depending on what type and syrians can have up to 20 so be prepared..and since u have lack of expiernce you really shouldnt breed...just saying

You can clean the cage or whatever you are using when they are around 16 days, they will open their eyes with 13-15 days.

I can't understand what you said at all, but the babies should be seperated from the mother with 21-25 days (I personally prefer at the 25th day).
The father must be seperated from the mother, even in the Dwarf specie I would never put them together.
Syrians should not live together.

I'm getting a hamster next week, but really want a male and female, and want them to have babies in the future :) what breed shall i get, i'm thinkin of getting a chinese hamster, are theyy good ? Does the mother really eat some of her babies? and how many babies does a hamster have at a time :) Thanx :) x

@oliviaxxx4 you shouldnt breed hamsters if you dont know any of that stuff and yea actually alot of first time moms eat their babies if they r put under stress and never pick the babies up till they are atleast 14 days old or mom will not recognize ur scent nd eat them dwarfs usally have 5-7 depending on what type and syrians can have up to 20 so be prepared..and since u have lack of expiernce you really shouldnt breed...just saying

@xxpkinggodxx err..i didnt know anything about hamsters either when teh mommy gave birth 2 days after i bought it..my hamsters survived...i got 8 dwarf hammies :)

@oliviaxxx4 nooo D:< u shuda got a dwarf hammy....and no the mom doesnt eat her babies unless theyre in pain or sick cuz they dont want the babbies to suffer :0 a hammy usually will have 8-10 babies :) 7 is rare ;3
