  • @yogashmoga Actually, the art that you're referring to is called Penjing. And yes, while it was first, bonsai is vastly different and thus the actual art of bonsai originated in Japan. Although I will give you credit for saying the Chinese had an influence in it.

  • they should number these vids.

  • i have just brought a 4 year old bonsi i'm not sure what kind it is as i brought it from tesco, i don't have any of these tools but do i reeeeeeeally need them as i have no idea where to get them and don't want to buy anything from the internet? )live in england)

  • Ive watched other bonsai vids, and this guy really encourages me to start the hobby. It looks like a very relaxing hobby.

  • Oh it's a Juniper. It's me the way it is.

  • I just bought a bonsai tree. The scissors he is using are they the same as snips..The scissors I own are J.A Henkles..They are very sharp and I can sharpen them I have dikes(not females, don't want to piss anyone off) can I use Sterilized dikes? Stop laughing. Seriously can I use them to trim this tree it's very special to me. (not my penis) I swear when when I opened the box the tree trembled. Really seriously can I use sharp Sterilized dikes.

  • Didn't bonsai originate in India, then transition to China then Japan?

  • where can i get the tools??

  • Great videos, They give me the encouragement to start a bonsai tree. Something I have always wanted to do, but did not know how to begin.

  • Very helpful thank you mate.

  • can u get those "bonsai sisscors" at any local garden place?

  • No. Large nurseries that carry bonsai trees might have them, but generally you have to either go to a bonsai nursery, or buy them online. My bonsai club has a guy who has a Joshua Roth franchise, and I get all my tools from him.

  • Again chasnsx, You are not qualified to give advice about bonsai. Please stop, I am asking you.

  • yeah probably - any with a bonsai section or bonsai plants

  • wont needle nose plyers replace half of those?

  • I have a needle nose pliers in my bonsai tool box, but the answer to your question is, no it won't. I use the needle nose pliers to bend wire on occasion, and sometimes to strip bark for a jin or shari, but that's about it.

  • I feel chasnsx that you know much about bonsai, but from watching your videos, you really don't. It's better you stop giving advice to those who need good advice from some one qualified.

  • OK I HAVE A QUESTION i found some random baby tree in my backyard, so i put it in a bonsai pot, with potting soil, and cut a third of the length of the roots off,,, so for the first month or two can it live in potting soil

  • ? kind of tree?

  • In the video is Mike Hansen of MBP Bonsai Studio in Pflugerville TX. He is one of the top Bonsai professionals in the world.

  • my bonsai tree is mature and its also pretty healthy and 4 a good bonsai u need.....

1.good sunlight from either east or west.

2.also wet the leaves because they grow greener.

3.trim the dead roots in 12 months or 16 months.

and hey i'm just a kid with a bonsai

i suggest a false cypress they r easier to take care of.

  • In your "more info" section, you say that Bonsai is Chinese. It is not. Bonsai is a Japanese art. The Chinese have a similar are, not as refined as Bonsai, called Penjing.

As for tools, concave cutters are essential. Japanese-made tools, pots and wire are far superior to Chinese or Korean.

  • actually, the art originated in China before influencing Japanese tradition.

  • yep that is correct

  • actually, believe it or not, the act of dwarfing trees originated in egypt long before china or japan... the chinese how ever picked up on this art and called it penjing- tree in a small pot, then the art carried on throughout asia and was known as bonsai by the japanese......

  • To be honest, this is all you need to be in bonsai from the stuff he said, good branch cutters and some razor sharp scissors. The rest is really optional. Like for wire..... you can use other stuff you get for 5 bucks at the local hardware shop.

  • I agree with leefyboodle. Not to be replicated in any way but i managed to do an entire shari on my jap maple using a screwdriver and a hammer. Tree survived.

  • I got my first bonsai at a mall. It came in a package and is in seed form. I think its called jack pine or pinus banksaina

  • bonsai tools cost a bloody fortune if you want the proper stuff...You don't NEED any of it...You can just get ordinary tools to do exactly the same job...Although the scissors having a cutting edge not a crushing edge is about all ya need..go dig in your dads tool kit.

  • This is true. My first few years in bonsai when I was young and broke, I got by with a garden pruner and an electrician's wire cutter for the wire. You should buy bonsai wire, though -- electric wire from the hardware store cost just as much as bonsai wire and the bonsai wire works better.

  • I can tell that you have not been doing bonsai for as long as you say you have. On your first video you don't have bonsai pliers, you are using needle nose pliers. So please chasnsx, stop giving advice, because really you don't know what your are doing.

  • good video

  • good video

  • i just got a bonzi tree for my birthday and it looks nothing like that. it is about 4 inches tall and kindof prickely. but it has the same form as that one. is there other kinds of these trees?

  • What the heck is the little broom for? I'm new to this...

  • The broom is to clean up any dust or soil off the sides of the pots

  • F.Y.I The broom is called a coco brush, and its not just used clean the outside of the pot its used to clean the top of soil in the pot and there are many other ways to use it when working on bonsai.

  • my goodness, please forgive me, I didn't know that my ignorance offended you so much.

  • just trying to help!!!!

  • I use the brush to clean off the dirt from the Nebari (surface roots that spread out)

  • Very helpful dude indeed...

  • thanks alot for these videos

  • this guy knows a lot
