She did a good version of cohens song, love that she sings so fast and quiet and also enjoy watching how she sings while using her body and her eye contact.
Everybody knows that if you cover Leonard Cohen, you should at least get the lyrics right... its "Everybody talking to their pockets"... not "Everybody's hands are in their pockets" @0:59... The latter loses virtually all the poetry of the original...
I feel in love with this voice at 19 with this song. At 39 I saw her video "Take Me Home" and even more in love. This song is 20 yrs old and she has only gotten better with age.

hahaha... Johnette Napolitano CHANGED the lyrics at this bits: "Everybody knows that the boat is leaking" turned to "Everybody knows that the boat is SINKING" and "Like their father or their dog just died" to "Like their MOMMA or their dog just died".
I so love this song... Cohen a lyrical genius... but her voice on this... I first heard it when I was 19.... gave me chills then, and now at 40, still does it!!! Amazing!
@POINTTALKERS i think L.Cohen would agree that she owns this song now...i would say concrete blonde is the reason i know who Len Cohen is but,ive seen natural born killers like a million times...funny that both versions of this song were in the pump up the volume movie..but not on the soundtrack...wtf.

Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde explains what happens when heat, cross-country treks and tequila mix poorly. Read more at The Worst Gig (WorstGig.com).
I think Johnette has one of the most pleasing female voices in music. To say nothing of goth (I never considered CB goth, but many gothers/death rockers dig them and give them complete acceptance) or rock in general, she could sing jazz beautifully. A lot of female singers become cloying when they move into the top of their range, but Johnette has this awesome, haunting timbre that is rarely seen.
EVERYBODY KNOWS..............there in lies the satire......as we play along..note our empty eyes...blank stares, as we see past the play...the veneeer thin fasaad. You will notice the slight grin...and raised eyebrows of perception as we note your play while seeing the deceptious intent of your script. You see....the insult lies not in your actions....but in your attempt at deceipt
The fact that my generation listens to Justin Bieber's prepubescent wailing and calls it music, and yet rejects this sort of music as though it's the plague saddens me. 'Nonconformity? Listening to music with substance? No! I might not be viewed as socially acceptable, and there's nothing to life but being accepted by people I may or may not actually have any non-superficial emotions for!'
my first dance at my wedding in 1992 was the The Blondes version of Little Wing. They are incredible, they are a time in my life held in perfect tempo and memory with each note.
Pump up the volume!!! Do they really all know????? I mean it does happen to some! Poeple just have to learn to treat each other right. I believe thats the point they were putting out,and reality to some! Good song!
@ABTE67 I'm guessing you are likely a teenager and only recently "discovered" this song. Know what? just because you're generation discovers songs like this that have been around long before you were even born it doesn't give you the right to decide what style of music it is. And your idiotic generation also doesn't think that oral sex is sex and yet STDs are absolutely transmitted that way.
@richardthewriter I'm a Cohen fan and a Concrete Blonde fan and you didn't have to besmirch the kid like that. Ms. Napolitano is a master in her own right. So what if she covers a Cohen song? And yes- a song can be sung or played to fit with any genre. I think Type O Negative does a good job with Summer Breeze.
Real Angel Johnette Napolitano --- the Best, Unique and Most Gifted Singer Ever. I love her! And she is soooo cute... her skin is sooo soft... I love her joy, her hair, her face. Her face changes always better. Chameleon. Angel. DELICIOUS! Johnette is a MIRACLE, pure magic! I never heard a song so soft, light, positive, as "paradise is home". That's heaven!
This was a time.. a far out time...Nirvana, The chili peppers, Pulp Fiction. I hope the people under 25 have that time now. Somehow, though, with Justin beiber and Snookie I fear not :(..
@lioncourt1770 Sure they do. The Justin Bieber & Lady Gaga of today were the New Kids on the Block and Madonna or Debbie Gibson of yesterday. And people railed that it was the end of music, yet music survived. I loved this music when it was out in the early 90s. At the time, there was, for example, Hootie & the Blowfish. Remember them??
Youre right, the only difference was that the only tv channel played cool music aswell, in those days.
Many good Bands like Faith No More got famous though MTV, that's a concept that does not work today, at least not for MTV as they only wanna score with the kids of today, who just listen to cellphone-ringtones and watch stupid dating show, or so it seems ;-)
I saw them at Tipatinas in New Orleans in 1992. I was so close I could see Johnettes pores LOL. I cried through half the show, I was so moved. By far my favorite group of all time.
I'm an old guy and a Cohen fan and I'm listening to this version for the first time and I think its excellent! She gives the song a whole new interpretation, a darker undertone, but it works. ..."so many people you just had to meet without your clothes..." Only Leonard could write a line like that.
I'm an old guy and a Cohen fan and I'm listening to this version for the first time and I think its excellent! She gives the song a whole new interpretation, a darker undertone, but it works. ..."so many people you just had to meet without your clothes..." Only Leonard could write a line like that.
The problems start out so broad & general, & funnel down to her own heartbreak. it's as if she's tired of you shaking your head in denial while she's growling out all the lyrics...and finally she just has to scream it in your face: EVERYBODY KNOWS!! EV-RY-BODY KNOWS!! ...that's how it goes (there's nothing you can do about it now)...and everybody knows (what you've done).
Agreed on the goose bumps.. that voice.. Johnette is one of the sexiest women ever in my book. I'll be enjoying Concrete Blonde for a long time to come.

Why do the greatest bands have to be SO under-rated and so under-appreciated ??? Simple: the Industrial "Music" SHITSTEM is ruled by PERVERT PSICHOPATICS who only want sell ROTTEN UGLY SHIT FAKES -- such as Madonna and Gaga --- and they want made us all a bunch of billions of MOROMS with NO sense of good taste for so good things and REAL TALENTED ARTISTS --- such as Concrete Blonde, Public Image, Bolshoi, Alphaville, Irene Cara, Sinead O'Connor, Kim Carnes, Sandra, Laura Branigan, Randy Bush...
i have loved this song since the first time i heard it watching Pump Up The Volume. I saw Concrete Blond the first time in 1990. I don't remeber if they played this.
