The new rappers would understand the flow and style of the older rappers. They would have known how to incorporate the style or improve it. While the older rappers have already developed a distinct sound which they can't really break from.

And Budden? He's a better rapper than Melle Mel, all due respect to the latter's work. @ArchdukeJuanNorth Tupac said it best, the newer rappers SHOULD be better than the older ones, not because they are actually better, but because the good new rappers would have analyzed and dissected all of the old school rappers. The new rappers would understand the flow and style of the older rappers. They would have known how to incorporate the style or improve it. While the older rappers have already developed a distinct sound which they can't really break from.

Of course newer rappers are better at rapping, but when it comes to being an MC, Melle Mel is the best to ever do it. In his time he was more popular than almost any popular rapper of today.

Just because you´re the first in something doesnt mean you´re the best, or better than anything. He might of won a grammy because hip hop was very primitive back then and it was very innovating, there wasnt much competition.
