So the mighty King Arthur's moment of legendary ascension was in fact nothing more than his friend telling him a bedtime story then fooling him with magic in order to cheer him up. Great...
Not to diminish the awesomeness of Arthur finally wielding Excalibur and believing in himself as the Once and Future King, but this moment would have meant a lot more if it hadn't been based on Merlin lying through his teeth and doing everything himself. =/
@RenardeBlanche i dont think it was meant that way. i think this means to prove that behind the legendary King Arthur of Camelot, there is a friend who is always behind him, ready to help and save him.
its not about Merlin lying for the sake of lying, its about doing so in order to make way for something GREAT, something that would be remembered and written down in History. :D
@Hitsuzenify I know it's supposed to be about Merlin guiding Arthur to his destiny, that Merlin is showing Arthur what he already sees in him, but it still feels like we're being cheated a little. Pulling the sword from the stone was supposed to be ARTHUR's achievement. The single great thing that HE did to prove he was worthy of the thrown. By making it an act of magic rather than strength they make it seem like Merlin is the only one who's special, when they're both meant to be.
Though if I'm honest I don't really like the fact Merlin helped Arthur- although it shows how well they go together, it seems like it's saying Arthur's not the true kind without Merlin :/
@KahlanPendragon I don't know if this was helping or not. When Merlin placed the sword in the stone he placed a powerful spell on the sword so no one could draw the sword (Part of the promise he made to the Great Dragon). When arthur draws the sword all Merlin done was lift the spell.
@Talyn81 when i watched that scene i was thinking the same thing...but it is really important Merlin to lift the spell!?I thought the spell only worked for people that are not prince Arthur..that only he can draw the sword from the stone without needing help because the sword was made only for him and the spell just protecting it from strangers... ah i really don't know plz help me :-)
@GuinevereGbLover I as well thought that since Excalibur was forged for only arthur he could draw the sword without the spell being lifted. But like so many people says that Emrys (Merlin) is the most powerful sorcerer the world will ever know. All of us seen how powerful he is when he destroyed Nimueh and during the magical duel with Morgana.
@Talyn81 yes i agree also, maybe Merlin protected the sword even from Arthur himself and when he became King it was the perfect time to give it because as far as i remember the Dragon never told to Merlin to give it away so easily,he insisted the sword to stay hidden
This episode was the highlight of my Christmas! I held my breath for 45 min. because Colin and Bradley´s acting was superb in this episode. Especially Colin! If season 5 can top this then I can die happy ^^

They should've extended this EPIC scene! I love how Merlin almost starts crying at this beautiful moment!
