I don't want to come down on hip hop... but rap doesn't seem to have changed much over the past 20 years... yet no one calls it old... So why can't straight ahead funk still be going and considered the sound of today too... ???

Musicians today sample all the old school stuff and the kids think they created. Little do they know back in the day music was so much better than it is now. You had to have "real" talent to sound good not just equiptment and a good producer to make you sound good.

I saw them at the Odeon in Cleveland back in the 90's. Believe it or not, me and my friend got invited backstage after the concert. We spent three hours hanging out and drinking beer with these guys. What a great memory.
