I finally had the opportunity to have spent some time in Salem, MA last September. There were some interesting museums, but I was disappointed in the less interesting gift shops. Touring The House Of The Seven Gables in Salem as well as the Nathanial Hawthorn house on the same campus.
I was drawn to a basket at my local thrift shop here in Ottawa Canada last week. Know what I found for .49 cents? A keychain with an outline of a witch leaning a broomhandle her cat at her feet. It says Stop By For A Spell on the other side is Salem Witch Museum. As a Halloween born Scorpio I HOPE IT BRINGS ME GOOD LUCK!!!!
It is ridiculous to talk about Wicca in the context of these with trials. The people in Salem (and elsewhere) were NOT victims of persecution because they were Wiccan or "witches", but because of false accusations of "witchcraft," conjuring and devil worship. Don't tie silly neo-pagan "religion" to the tragedy of the Salem witch trials.
why was the original sabbatical circle that was in the middle of the floor of the museum pulled up and altered. I would like the opportunity to talk to the original artist and designer of that sabbatical circle.
I suspect the reason that the sabbatical circle at the Salem Witch Museum was replaced is because it featured 12 names of the devil on its' outer rim.
I can see christians complaining about it, but, more importantly, I can also see wiccans being upset about being associated with satanism.
In the end, it is probably less controversial to memorialize the dead than to malign the living.
I have a souvenir replica ring of the original circle that I bought when I visited 26 years ago.
@qabala what is the original circle that contained the nine demon names called? who designed it? who originally built the original circle and placed it on the floor of the museum? is there any information available? for the original circle?
It was, at the time, called a "Saddat Circle". I don't know the etymology of the word so I can't give you anymore information there.
As for any other details on the original circle, I'm afraid the best I can do is try to scan my souvenir ring in and post it somewhere. I just might do that. I really don't have any other information.
althought wicca is 50 years old, many of the beliefs go back thousands of years...from the celts...and so on...wicca and witchcraft are both religions as of 1985....ive been a witch for 25 years or so since i was 8
Wicca is NOT an Ancient Religion it is 50 years old.The ideas and some of the practices ARE from Ancient times.Witchcraft IS an Ancient Religion but the way of Wicca was started 50 years ago.The "rules" which are guidance not Absolute!Much of Witchcraft though these days is broken history there is NOT a complete lineage from then to now and that is partly because it is an Adaptable Religion and partly because of the Persecution.I think she needs to get more educated before speaking like this. Agreed! Though Wicca was being founded about 110 years ago (around the turn of the 20th century). It is highly disappointing that she made such an obvious faux pas with that definition of Wicca. However we should keep in mind that she is the curator of a touristy museum and not necessarily an expert on Neo-Pagan belief systems. Yet one must wonder why she would attempt to answer his questions on topics so unrelated to the Salem Witch Trials such as gothy teens and Wicca.
This is only if you ignore the scholars from Continental Europe who have found that the trials do, IN FACT (despite Hutton's mitigations), preserve Pagan beliefs and practices rooted within Indo-European shamanic motifs. Hutton's thesis can only be maintained if if you reject this data, because he argued that there was so antique Paganism onto which Gardnerian Wicca and the NF Coven could have been based. But, Hutton also frequently misrepresents the scholars he's citing as agreeing with him!
Or because Friday is Venus day and Venus is a Goddess and 13 is the number of months in the Lunar year. So together maybe that makes it really "bad". There are many theories however many consider Friday the 13th to be a VERY Lucky day. Because of the number of Lunar Months and the fact that it is the Day of Venus.
yes my dad read it in a newspaper, just 2 let u know i uploaded videos on my page about flamingos dolphins and fireworks if any1 is interested, plz check it out and leave comments

This was a great place. Thank you. Loved salem and its history.
It inspired some of us to make a movie and put on You Tube. They are made by Shadowyn Films.
title: The Three Sisters
Are they good witches or bad ones? You decide.
another title is called: Soul Searching
It is all a series.

I don't doubt that they weren't based on ancient practices not at all. I believe that Wicca is a "brand" of Witchcraft

Does anyone know why friday the 13th is an unlucky day? they hung most of the witches on a friday and made them walk up 13 steps to get hung
